Indian Country analyzes the works of Anglo writers and artists who encountered American Indians in the course of their travels in the Southwest during the one-hundred-year period beginning in 1840. Martin Padget looks first at the accounts produced by government-sponsored explorers, most notably John Wesley Powell's writings about the Colorado Plateau. He goes on to survey the writers who popularized the region in fiction and travelogue, including Helen Hunt Jackson and Charles F. Lummis. He also introduces us to Eldridge Ayer Burbank, an often-overlooked artist who between 1897 and 1917 made thousands of paintings and drawings of Indians from over 140 western tribes. Padget addresses two topics: how the Southwest emerged as a distinctive region in the minds of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Americans, and what impact these conceptions, and the growing presence of Anglos, had on Indians in the region. Popular writers like Jackson and Lummis presented the American Indians as a "primitive culture waiting to be discovered" and experienced firsthand. Later, as Padget shows, Anglo activists for Indian rights, such as Mabel Dodge Luhan and Mary Austin, worked for the acceptance of other views of Native Americans and their cultures.

This is the story of the British Army's endeavours during the Great War to deceive the enemy and trick him into weakening his defences and redeploying his reserves. In this year-by-year account, Martin Davies shows how Sir John French and Sir Douglas Haig actively encouraged their Army commanders to employ trickery so that all attacks should come as a 'complete surprise' to the enemy. The methods of concealment of real military artefacts and the creation of dummy ones were ingenious enough but the real art lay in the development of geographically dispersed deception plans which disguised the real time and place of attack and forced the enemy to defend areas threatened by fake operations. Some of these plans, such as disguising mules as tanks and creating dummy airfields bordered on the farcical but were often amazingly effective. The driving force behind the deception plans was GHQ and the Army commanders, further dispelling the myth of 'Lions led by Donkeys'. Evidence shows that the British Army employed deception to advantage in all their theatres of operation.

This text will provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the issues that affect people with significant disabilities from a historical, policy, leadership, and systems perspective. The text will be particularly useful in either graduate or advanced undergraduate courses for prospective rehabilitation counselors, teachers, community mental health professionals, social workers, psychologists, case managers, or allied health professionals. A major goal of the text is to transmit the ideal of living, working, and playing in the community - an ideal that has often been denied to persons who have significant disabilities. Part One of the text, 'Historical, Philosophical, and Public Policy Perspectives,' issues relating to community living—education, employment, housing, transportation, health care, and leisure - are explored from a historical perspective that begins with the identification of issues affecting persons with significant disabilities that have impeded independence, productivity, and inclusion within the larger community. Next, an overview is provided on the various social contexts and connections between social and economic forces - urbanization, industrialization, and immigration - that fostered the development of institutions as a means of dealing with the poor, deviant, and those with disabilities. The history of institutionalization is chronicled, as well as the key legal and constitutional challenges to segregation and exclusion of persons with disabilities. In Part Two, 'Portraits of Leadership,' the perspectives of persons with significant disabilities, parents, and siblings focus on the issues of everyday life from the vantage point of life roles. Topics, ranging from funding, inclusion, IEPs, related services, assistive technology, employment, stigma, spirituality, advocacy, case management, medication policies, education and training for human service professionals, and adaptation among others, are presented in a passionate, personal, insightful, and meaningful manner. The final part of the text concludes with an assessment and analysis of current policies, and advocates that our educational and human service systems develop an infrastructure or foundation which allows for positive change and encourages inclusion. Specific recommendations of the text's contributors complete this section.

King's call for racial justice and his faith in the power of nonviolence to engender a major transformation of American society is movingly conveyed in this authoritative multivolume series. In Volume IV, with the Montgomery bus boycott at an end, King confronts the sudden demands of celebrity while trying to identify the next steps in the burgeoning struggle for equality. Anxious to duplicate the success of the boycott, he spends much of 1957 and 1958 establishing the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. But advancing the movement in the face of dogged resistance, he finds that it is easier to inspire supporters with his potent oratory than to organize a mass movement for social change. Yet King remains committed: "The vast possibilities of a nonviolent, non-cooperative approach to the solution of the race problem are still challenging indeed. I would like to remain a part of the unfolding development of this approach for a few more years." King's budding international prestige is affirmed in March 1957, when he attends the independence ceremonies in Ghana, West Africa. Two months later his first national address, at the "Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom," is widely praised, and in June 1958, King's increasing prominence is recognized with a long-overdue White House meeting. During this period King also cultivates alliances with the labor and pacifist movements, and international anticolonial organizations. As Volume IV closes, King is enjoying the acclaim that has greeted his first book, Stride Toward Freedom, only to suffer a near-fatal stabbing in New York City.
