This second volume of Martin Nicholson's projected four volume autobiography takes the author through his student years between 1956 and 1963, during the Cold War. Martin did his National Service in the Royal Navy learning Russian. He took his degree in Russian and Spanish at Cambridge University and spent a year at Moscow State University under the auspices of the British Council. It was 1961, when the Russians were celebrating their success in the space race, while also trying to come to terms with the legacy of Stalin's dictatorship. Martin observed all this at first hand, a unique preparation for his later career as an analyst of the Soviet Union in the British Diplomatic Service.

CONTINUITY: the doctor is about 750 years old at this point, and has apparently aged 300 years since Tomb of the Cybermen. He ages about another 300 years between this story and the seventh' Doctor's Time and the Rani. An absolute must for every Doctor Who fan, this new edition of the classic reference guide has not been updated at all for the 50th anniversary.

This PhD sought to determine the mechanisms for the reactor explosions by mapping, collecting and analysing samples from across the area of Japan that received radioactive fallout from the explosions. In doing this, the author conducted significant fieldwork in the restricted-access fallout zone using ground and novel UAV-based mapping of radiation to identify hot-spot areas for sample collecting but also using these tools to verify the efficacy of the clean-up operations ongoing in the prefecture. Such fieldwork was both technically pioneering for its use of UAVs (drones) but also selfless in terms of bravely entering a nuclear danger area to collect samples for the greater benefit of the scientific community.
