“A slender but punch-packing overview of the environmental destruction of the Far North” from the award-winning environmental reporter (Kirkus Reviews). Traditionally thought of as the last great unspoiled territory on Earth, the Arctic is in reality home to some of the most severe contamination on the planet. Awarded a major grant by the Pew Charitable Trusts to study the Arctic’s deteriorating environment, Los Angeles Times environmental reporter Marla Cone traveled across the Far North, from Greenland to the Aleutian Islands, to find out why the Arctic has become so toxic. Silent Snow is not only a scientific journey, but a personal one with experiences that range from tracking endangered polar bears in Norway to hunting giant bowhead whales with native Alaskans struggling to protect their livelihood. Through it all, Cone reports with heartbreaking immediacy on the dangers of pollution to native peoples and ecosystems, how Arctic cultures are adapting to this pollution, and what solutions will prevent the crisis from getting worse.

Beyond the beaten path of local landmarks, residents and tourists can find curious secrets, lost mysteries and fascinating legends. The famed Hope Diamond once found itself, and its mysterious curse, buried in an Asheville girl's sandbox. Elvis once handed a cherished guitar to a local man at an Asheville concert, and he held on to it for forty years. At a flea market, an Asheville attorney paid a few bucks for an old tintype likely of Billy the Kid, and it may be worth millions. Native author Marla Hardee Milling recounts odd, but true, stories hiding behind Asheville's picturesque beauty.
To be a black woman of faith in the American South is to understand and experience spirituality in a particular way. How this understanding expresses itself in everyday practices of faith is the subject of Between Sundays, an innovative work that takes readers beyond common misconceptions and narrow assumptions about black religion and into the actual complexities of African American women's spiritual lives. Gracefully combining narrative, interviews, and analysis, this book explores the personal, political, and spiritual commitments of a group of Baptist women whose experiences have been informed by the realities of life in a rural, southern community. In these lives, "spirituality" emerges as a space for creative agency, of vital importance to the ways in which these women interpret, inform, and reshape their social conditions--conditions often characterized by limited access to job opportunities, health care, and equitable schooling. In the words of these women, and in Marla F. Frederick's deft analysis, we see how spirituality—expressed as gratitude, empathy, or righteous discontent—operates as a transformative power in women's interactions with others, and in their own more intimate renegotiations of self.
2007 Society for the Anthropology of North America (SANA) Book Award Complete List of Authors:Dorothy Holland, Donald M. Nonini, Catherine Lutz, Lesley Bartlett, Marla Frederick-McGlathery, Thaddeus C. Guldbrandsen, and Enrique G. Murillo, Jr. What is the state of democracy at the turn of the twenty-first century? To answer this question, seven scholars lived for a year in five North Carolina communities. They observed public meetings of all sorts, had informal and formal interviews with people, and listened as people conversed with each other at bus stops and barbershops, soccer games and workplaces. Their collaborative ethnography allows us to understand how diverse members of a community not just the elite think about and experience “politics” in ways that include much more than merely voting. This book illustrates how the social and economic changes of the last three decades have made some new routes to active democratic participation possible while making others more difficult. Local Democracy Under Siege suggests how we can account for the current limitations of U.S. democracy and how remedies can be created that ensure more meaningful participation by a greater range of people. Living My Dream is a true-to-life story. The author takes us step-by-step through the events of his life from childhood in a tiny village of Greece to retirement in the USA and beyond. Occasionally, throughout the book and in his epilogue, he allows us to take a peek at his personal philosophy regarding God, truth, justice, science and our universe in general. Here, he introduces unconventional, yet convincing, ideas to support his philosophy. Most noticeable however is his candid and clear recounting of the events of poverty and hardship throughout his youth. At times, the story becomes almost incredible and we cannot help wonder whether or not those conditions existed indeed in the 1940s and 1950s when he grew up and attended high school, or at the time he worked and attend college at the same time. As a child and as a teenager, he lived through two civil wars and during the German occupation of the land that left him with lasting memories related to those dreadful events. He witnessed the worst form of human brutality perpetuated by men against their fellow men and he was the onlooker of death and destruction of property at the time he was trying to receive his elemental and high school education. He was not able or was not allowed to quench his thirst for higher education in Greece, and against all odds, he migrated to the USA to satisfy the desire for his college education. Without financial support and ignorant of the English language, he arrived in Chicago in 1959 and fought to finance his schooling and to receive his BA. He has been a member of the Food Technology Institute, recognized by Who's Who in America, and in addition to being chemist, he became Packaging Engineer by attending the packaging school of Michigan State University. Living My Dream is truly a compelling story narrating the life story of a young man who struggles to survive and to receive his education under unfavorable social climate. His life story is intertwined with his dream to accomplish things in life, regardless of the obstacles that presented themselves along the way, and is the incarnation of what he believes. "Everything is possible, if you have the desire, provided, your expectations from yourself are real", he says. To say the least, his narrative makes us appreciate all the freedoms and opportunities our democratic system offers to all of us, things we are taking for granted.

This book is an introductory text to the field of psychological testing primarily suitable for undergraduate students in psychology, education, business, and related fields. Psychological Testing is clearly written, well-organized, comprehensive, and replete with illustrative materials. How Black Christians, Muslims, and Jews have used media to prove their equality, not only in the eyes of God but in society. The institutional structures of white supremacy—slavery, Jim Crow laws, convict leasing, and mass incarceration—require a commonsense belief that black people lack the moral and intellectual capacities of white people. It is through this lens of belief that racial exclusions have been justified and reproduced in the United States. Televised Redemption argues that African American religious media has long played a key role in humanizing the race by unabashedly claiming that blacks are endowed by God with the same gifts of goodness and reason as whites—if not more, thereby legitimizing black Americans’ rights to citizenship. If racism is a form of perception, then religious media has not only altered how others perceive blacks, but has also altered how blacks perceive themselves. Televised Redemption argues that black religious media has provided black Americans with new conceptual and practical tools for how to be in the world, and changed how black people are made intelligible and recognizable as moral citizens. In order to make these claims to black racial equality, this media has encouraged dispositional changes in adherents that were at times empowering and at other times repressive. From Christian televangelism to Muslim periodicals to Hebrew Israelite radio, Televised Redemption explores the complicated but critical redemptive history of African American religious media.
The presence of women and African Americans not simply as viewers, but also as televangelists and station owners in their own right has dramatically changed the face of American religious broadcasting in recent decades. Colored Television looks at the influence of these ministries beyond the United States, where complex gospels of prosperity and gospels of sexual redemption mutually inform one another while offering hopeful yet socially contested narratives of personal uplift. As an ethnography, Colored Television illuminates the phenomenal international success of American TV preachers like T.D. Jakes, Creflo Dollar, Joyce Meyer, and Juanita Bynum. Focusing particularly on Jamaica and the Caribbean, it also explores why the genre has resonated so powerfully around the world. Investigating the roles of producers, consumers, and distributors, Marla Frederick takes a unique look at the ministries, the communities they enter, and the global markets of competition that buffer them.
