Humanoid robotics have made remarkable progress since the dawn of robotics. So why don't we have humanoid robot assistants in day-to-day life yet? This book analyzes the keys to building a successful humanoid robot for field robotics, where collisions become an unavoidable part of the game. The author argues that the design goal should be real anthropomorphism, as opposed to mere human-like appearance. He deduces three major characteristics to aim for when designing a humanoid robot, particularly robot hands: - Robustness against impacts - Fast dynamics - Human-like grasping and manipulation performance Instead of blindly copying human anatomy, this book opts for a holistic design methodology. It analyzes human hands and existing robot hands to elucidate the important functionalities that are the building blocks toward these necessary characteristics. They are the keys to designing an anthropomorphic robot hand, as illustrated in the high performance anthropomorphic Awiwi Hand presented in this book. This is not only a handbook for robot hand designers. It gives a comprehensive survey and analysis of the state of the art in robot hands as well as the human anatomy. It is also aimed at researchers and roboticists interested in the underlying functionalities of hands, grasping and manipulation. The methodology of functional abstraction is not limited to robot hands, it can also help realize a new generation of humanoid robots to accommodate a broader spectrum of the needs of human society.

They are the enemies of the dwarves and control the darkest magics, but even then power of the Älfar has its limits. To save their own people, they must enter into an unwinnable war. Sinthoras and Caphalor, two very different Älfar, watch as their plans come to fruition: the hidden land-the home of the dwarves-has fallen to their army of trolls, barbarians and Älfar, and now the lands of the hated elves are within their grasp. But the alliance is beginning to crumble as greed triumphs over obedience. And Sinthoras and Caphalor face another threat: an enemy from the empire of the Älfar, thought to be defeated, has resurfaced, and while their best warriors fight in the hidden land, the Älfar homeland lies almost defenseless.

Another Opening, Another Show derived from the authors asking students what they wanted in an introductory theatre textbook. They've given them exactly that: • A book that doesn't cost a lot • A book that is fun to read • A book that helps them understand and enjoy theatre • An insider's look at theatre, not a scholar's critique of it • An opportunity to learn about plays on a stage rather than plays on a page • Pictures that illustrate the ideas in the text instead of just decorating it Instructors will appreciate the Third Edition's modularity. Each chapter stands on its own, allowing for maximum flexibility for individual course needs. The book's inclusive approach touches on cultural diversity and gender issues in American theatre, as well as adding an entirely new chapter on Asian theatre. Photos of contemporary productions enrich the text, and a variety of side material shows students how the concepts they read about are applied by theatre professionals.

Self-defence – the 'ancient right' – has never been more relevant than in the present era of widespread calls for criminal justice reform. The book substantially advances the patinaed discussion by introducing for the first time a comprehensive value-centric approach to thinking about the defence's deeper rationale. It tackles core issues such as the relative importance of the State's claimed monopoly on force, procedural justice and the need to shore up the justice system's legitimacy and creditworthiness, everyone's presumptive 'right to life,' and the importance of ensuring equal standing between citizens. And, in so doing, the book breaks ground by addressing public perceptions of 'just' and 'right' outcomes, as well as the emphasis legal systems place (and should place) on State power.

Migration has been one of the most pressing societal issues throughout history. Immigrant associations play a crucial role in understanding this phenomenon. They channel migration streams, influence the assimilation of their members, and serve as representatives of the entire immigrant group in society. However, they remain an understudied subject, particularly in historical research. To address this gap, this study examines German immigrant associations in New York from the 1890s to the 1930s. Through an innovative combination of statistical and textual analyses, it explores the class composition of these associations, their intricate system of mutual aid, and their political activities. This study offers insights into how specific socio-economic motivations influenced immigrant organization and collective action, including aspects such as long-distance nationalism and cross-border ethnic identity. Ultimately, based on these findings, this study demonstrates that immigrant associations played a crucial role in helping their members adapt to a new social and economic environment. Additionally, it shows why and how immigrant associations significantly shaped the image of German immigrants in American social and political life.
A luminous and heartfelt collection of mourning poetry. Over the course of two decades and six books, Peter Markus has been making fiction out of a lexicon shaped by the wordsbrother and fish and mud. In an essay on Markus's work, Brian Evenson writes, "If it's not clear by now, Markus's use of English is quite unique. It is instead a sort of ritual speech, an almost religious invocation in which words themselves, through repetition, acquire a magic or power that revives the simpler, blunter world of childhood." Now, in his debut book of poems, When Our Fathers Return to Us as Birds,Markus tunes his eye and ear toward a new world, a world where father is the new brother, a world where the father's slow dying and eventual death leads Markus, the son, to take a walk outside to "meet my shadow in the deepening shade." In this collection, a son is simultaneously caring for his father, losing his father, and finding his dead father in the trees and the water and the sky. He finds solace in the birds and in the river that runs between his house and his parents' house, with its view of the shut-down steel mill on the river's other side, now in the process of being torn down. The book is steadily punctuated by this recurring sentence that the son wakes up to each day: My father is dying in a house across the river. The rhythmic and recursive nature to these poems places the reader right alongside the son as he navigates his journey of mourning. These are poems written in conversation with the poems of Jack Gilbert, Linda Gregg, Jim Harrison, Jane Kenyon, Raymond Carver, Theodore Roethke too—poets whose poems at times taught Markus how to speak. "In a dark time . . .," we often hear it said, "there are no words." But the truth is, there are always words. Sometimes our words are all we have to hold onto, to help us see through the darkened woods and muddy waters, times when the ear begins to listen, the eye begins to see, and the mouth, the body, and the heart, in chorus, begin to speak. Fans of Markus's work and all of those who are caring for dying parents or grieving their loss will find comfort, kinship, and appreciation in this honest and beautiful collection.

Markus Hammer investigates a time-based and analytics-supported operations management approach. He explores five perspectives: 1) the needs of industry, in particular manufacturing in process industries, 2) the impact of digitization, with focus on Big Data and analytics, 3) the management of operations through time-based performance metrics, 4) how operations improvement methods and advanced process control help achieve resource-productive operations and 5) learning from practice based on two empirical case studies. The author conceives, explains, and tests an implementation methodology. The final case study proves that the developed implementation methodology works in practice.
Over 4 years in the making, Bleeding for Allah scrutinizes Islam from the very birth of the religion. The Koran, the Holy Book of more than one billion people worldwide, is systematically analyzed to reflect the true nature of its message. Bleeding for Allah goes the full distance in detailing the uncomfortable and painful truth of that message. Although touted as a peaceful religion and Islamic terrorists dismissed as misguided fanatics, it is clear that the very words of Allah, as voiced through the Archangel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad, are anything but peaceful. Markus Aurelius, in concise and clear fashion, gives countless examples of Koranic verse that readily demonstrates its militancy and violence. The author speaks to cultural bias and is quite sensitive to its influence on interpretation. But the author finds it extremely difficult to dismiss countless holy verse such as: Believers, take neither the Jews nor the Christians for your friends. (Koran, 5:51) or: Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites, and deal sternly with them. (Koran, 66:9). To further try to eliminate cultural bias, the book includes a comparative analysis of specific words between the New Testament and the Koran. For example, the words punishment and torture appear 600% more in the Koran while the word love appears 500% less. The author carefully examines the Prophet Muhammads life and outlines the gruesome details of his explosive success in the 7th century. The shrewd Prophet creatively found divine support from Allah for his banditry and mass murder. Sadly, more than one billion people believe those words today. Americans are woefully in the dark regarding the Koran. But few Americans have taken the time to read the Koran itself. Markus Aurelius challenges the American public to do just that. Bleeding for Allah is the perfect primer.
In the natural sciences today, research and teaching are often carried out on the assumption of evolution. The evolution theory is at present one of the main basic concepts of the scientific community. However, there are at least 75 scientific arguments that invalidate the evolution theory. 95 Theses Against Evolution makes it clear that alternative concepts are necessary, such as ID (intelligent design). This book shows that ID is much more credible than evolution. Though unresolved questions of detail are included, the model of the theory of evolution, primeval soup, and the Big Bang, is not called into question as a basic principle. This paradigm contains fundamental, non-provable extrapolations into the distant past as well as philosophical assumptions that are elevated to scientific dogmas. The assumption of evolution is so deeply rooted in science that only a massive change in thinking can lead to freer handling of questions of origin and development. The 95 Theses described here are intended to contribute to this discussion. Today’s situation is similar to that in the 16th century, when Dr. Martin Luther with his 95 Theses, invited debate on church practices of the time. Hopefully, this publication will have a similar effect.
