The town of Buckleboo Creek in tropical North Queensland was known as a tropical paradise. But engineer Sam Gawler learned from the moment he hit the towns main street that the place had a seedy underbelly. Gawler was nominally a‘Trouble Shooter for the giant mining corporation which dominated the town. But the unorthodox methods he used to sort out the company’s problems were described by some who knew him as those of a ‘Hitman’. He was the man the corporation called upon when sticky situations required an unorthodox solution. He was not an employee. He was a ‘gun for hire’. The agreement Gawler had with the company guaranteed him that they would always provide all the support and resources he needed. And they expected him to do the job his way. The company wanted results from Gawler, but they didn’t always want to know the details of how he got them. They understood that he cut corners and pushed boundaries. He was paid handsomely to get the job done. But Gawler always had no doubt that if he stepped over the line the company would deny all knowledge of him. He was comforted with the unwritten understanding he had with the company that they would always back him to the hilt behind the scenes. He preferred the anonymity the role offered him. Now the company needed him at their goldmine in Buckleboo Creek. Gawler had been their first and only choice. He had spent several years travelling to sort out difficult issues at the company’s trouble spots in many parts of the world. He had always come up trumps.

Secret societies have both fascinated and frightened people for hundreds of years. Often the infamous Illuminati is mentioned as the core of conspiracies which span the globe. The Illuminati is actually a historical secret society which had goals of revolutions and world domination dating back to the 1770s. Since then, rumors and conspiracy theories involving the Illuminati continue to spread, sometimes finding their way into popular novels like Dan Brown's Angels & Demons and Hollywood movies like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Some men have even come forward claiming to be former members, offering details of what they allege are the inner workings of the organization. When you sift through all of the information available on the subject, you may be surprised that the truth is stranger than fiction. In The Illuminati: Facts & Fiction, conspiracy and occult expert Mark Dice separates history from Hollywood and shows why tales of the secret society won't die. - Original Writings and Documents - Purported Texts - Freemasonry's Connections - The Georgia Guidestones - Alleged Victims and Defectors - Aliens and Reptillians - Activists and Eyewitnesses - Fictional books - Fictional films - TV references - The Music Industry - Mainstream Media Manipulation - Documentary Films - Pre Illuminati Organizations - The Luciferian Doctrine - The Federal Reserve - Skull and Bones - The Bilderberg Group - Bohemian Grove - The Council on Foreign Relations - The Franklin Cover-up - Sex Magic - Election Fraud - The Necronomicon - The Church of Satan - The Secret Doctrine - Emerald Tablet - The Book of Thoth - The Book of Dzyan - The Report From Iron Mountain - Protocols of the Elders of Zion - The Holy Grail - MK-ULTRA Documents - The Satanic Bible - The Secret Doctrine - David Rockefeller's Memoirs - Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism - Secret Societies and Subversive Movements - Occult Theocrasy - Externalization of the Hierarchy - None Dare Call It Conspiracy - Magick: In Theory and Practice - Bloodlines of the Illuminati - The Lexicon of Freemasonry - Morals and Dogma - The Secret Teachings of All Ages - Myron Fagan - Edith Miller - Gary Allen - Abbe Barruel - Nesta Webster - Anthony J. Today, managers, politicians, educators, and healthcare providers are highly skilled technicians who navigate modern systems. However, followers seek more than know-how; they desire moral leadership. Even leaders equipped with skills must make difficult ethical choices. This book connects philosophy to leadership by examining three representative texts from the history of philosophy: Plato’s Republic, Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, and Niccolò Machiavelli’s The Prince. The leadership ideas contained in each one of these philosopher’s works were not only pioneering for their age but continue to be relevant today because they provide insight into the enduring questions of leadership. The book demonstrates the timeliness of the classical works by applying these philosophical approaches to historical and contemporary cases. This book is ideal for readers who are acquainted with philosophy and those who are uninitiated. The connections made between philosophy, leadership literature, and real-life leaders enable readers to appreciate how deeper reflection into the themes of leadership might merit scholarly attention and bear witness to the close union between the philosophy of leadership and the real world.
Advertising is everywhere. By some estimates, the average American is exposed to over 3,000 advertisements each day. Whether we realize it or not, "adcreep"—modern marketing's march to create a world where advertising can be expected anywhere and anytime—has come, transforming not just our purchasing decisions, but our relationships, our sense of self, and the way we navigate all spaces, public and private. Adcreep journeys through the curious and sometimes troubling world of modern advertising. Mark Bartholomew exposes an array of marketing techniques that might seem like the stuff of science fiction: neuromarketing, biometric scans, automated online spies, and facial recognition technology, all enlisted to study and stimulate consumer desire. This marriage of advertising and technology has consequences. Businesses wield rich and portable records of consumer preference, delivering advertising tailored to your own idiosyncratic thought processes. They mask their role by using social media to mobilize others, from celebrities to your own relatives, to convey their messages. Guerrilla marketers turn every space into a potential site for a commercial come-on or clandestine market research. Advertisers now know you on a deeper, more intimate level, dramatically tilting the historical balance of power between advertiser and audience. In this world of ubiquitous commercial appeals, consumers and policymakers are numbed to advertising's growing presence. Drawing on a variety of sources, including psychological experiments, marketing texts, communications theory, and historical examples, Bartholomew reveals the consequences of life in a world of non-stop selling. Adcreep mounts a damning critique of the modern American legal system's failure to stem the flow of invasive advertising into our homes, parks, schools, and digital lives.

Jade’s prisoner laughed. “My name is John Smith,” he said. “I am visiting Miami Beach from Indianapolis, where I work in a factory that manufactures tools for the automotive industry. I am married to a woman named Frances, and I have three children. I go to church every Sunday, and listen to Chicago White Sox games on the radio.”
Jade took a step closer, his Smith and Wesson extended. “Are you sure?” he asked coolly. “That’s your story? That’s what you’re going to stick with?”
“My name is John Smith,” he repeated, with a smile that could not be tolerated.
“All right,” Oscar Jade readily agreed, and put a bullet through the top of his right foot.
Oscar Jade, a private detective in Miami Beach in 1942, is investigating the suicide of a friend…and he doesn’t believe it’s a suicide. As he investigates, the stakes soon escalate to life and death – for a great many people – and it soon becomes clear that the war is about to be fought right here – at home.
“Prepare to be taken on a journey to 1942 Miami Beach where the drinks are straight…and the anti-hero – the club-footed, hard-drinking, harder punching Oscar Jade – is the last man you’d want on your tail. Storm Maker is a nostalgic blast where monochrome images of Bogart and Bergman are conjured in the mind and the soundtrack crackles under the scratchy needle on an uneven gramophone.” - A P Bateman, Amazon #1 Best-Selling Author
This is the second book of four in the USS HOQUIAM PF-5 series: RESURRECTION, ROAD TO HUNGNAM, HOCKY MARU, and KNOCK OFF SHIP's WORK. It is the continuing story of the USS HOQUIAM PF-5 as seen through the eyes of a young sailor, Lee Harrison Stewart. ROAD TO HUNGNAM continues the story started in RESURRECTED. As the story opens, the Hoquiam is in the midst of shakedown and training. Abruptly, she is ordered to Wonsan, North Korea, to participate in the Fifth Marines Amphibious Landing. The Commanding Officer is told his ship will carry out any additional tasks for two weeks as may be ordered by Commander, Task Force 90. Anchored in Wonsan Harbor, the Captain, Lieutenant Commander Maxwell J. Brown, receives new orders to report to Commander, Task Force 96, for an indeterminate length of time. The crew is not prepared for the very cold weather that drops out of Siberia within days, as the Hoquiam acts as Harbor Entrance Control Vessel for troop and supply landings at Iwon, Songjin, Hungnam, and Chongjin, North Korea. Shortly after completing those missions, she returns to Hungnam and acts as Harbor Entrance Control Vessel once again. Meanwhile, Lee Stewart receives a letter from Betty Echols, a former girl friend, who believes he is still at Naval Station Tongue Point. She writes a sad tale of woe. At her high school graduation party, her date, Ralph Rogers, got her drunk, had his way, and now she was pregnant. Ralph immediately joined the Air Force and left town. She begs Lee to marry her and father this child. A letter from the D.A. in Astoria, Oregon, arrives a short time later, charging Lee Stewart with felony copulation with a minor, Betty Echols, whom he had dated, impregnating her, and serving her intoxicants. Lt. Marston steals both letters and places them in Stewart Personnel Jacket for safekeeping until they return to Yokosuka. The Hoquiam moors in front of ComFltActs Hungnam as their communications guard while they prepare to evacuate Hungnam. The ship takes on marines and children, and moves out to act as swept mine channel point at the Sea Buoy, Buoy #1. As such, the Hoquiam is literally the last vessel to depart the Hungnam area, right behind the Underwater Demolition Team support ship. The Hoquiam anchors in Pusan long enough to disembark the marines and Korean children, then sails home to Yokosuka, arriving December 31st, seventy-three days after she was ordered to Wonsan for two weeks. Lee learns his Japanese girl friend, Kiki Hatsumoto, had to leave Yokosuka.

A compelling account of how incorporating play into work can help us overcome the uncertainty and turbulence that surrounds work How can we learn to deal with uncertainty at work? The answer, as Dodgson and Gann eloquently portray in this pathfinding book, is to learn from the adaptive behaviors of entrepreneurs. Play, the authors show, is a crucial component of this. It encourages exploration, experimentation, and curiosity while it also challenges established practices and orthodoxies. It facilitates change in people and organizations. Drawing on in-depth interviews with entrepreneurs and innovators, this book explains why we should incorporate play into work, what play looks like, and how to encourage playfulness in individuals and organizations. Dodgson and Gann identify four key behaviors that endorse, encourage, and guide play: grace, craft, fortitude, and ambition, and provide a blueprint for an alternative way of working that fosters resilience and encourages innovation and growth in difficult times.
Marc Bolan was the very first superstar of the 1970s. As the seductive focus of T. Rex he revelled in fame and fortune, released a string of classic records before tragically losing his way. The fatal car accident in 1977 cut short his planned comeback as a punk rocker, but also served to fix Bolan as the definitive icon of the Glam years. Bolan's music and chameleonic style were to influence a generation of future bands. In his various guises he could be a beatnik, a mod, a punk, a hippie and a Glam hero. This biography of a pop obsessive draws from interviews with many friends and colleagues including broadcaster John Peel, brother Harry and band members Mickey Finn and Bill Legend.

This second edition of a major textbook uses lively prose and a series of carefully-crafted pedagogical features to both introduce sociology as a discipline and to help students realize how deeply sociological issues impact on their own lives. Over the book's 12 chapters, students discover what sociology is, alongside its historical development and emergent new concerns. They will be led through the theories that underpin the discipline and familiarized with what it takes to undertake good sociological research. Ultimately students will be led and inspired to develop their own sociological imagination – learning to question their own assumptions about the society, the culture and the world around them today. Historically, the majority of introductory sociology textbooks have run to many hundreds of pages, discouraging students from further reading. By contrast, Discovering Sociology has been carefully designed and developed as a true introduction, covering the key ideas and topics that first year undergraduate students need to engage with without sacrificing intellectual rigour. New to this Edition: - Two new chapters adding coverage on crime, deviance and political sociology - Updated examples, Vox Pops and case studies keep this new edition feeling fresh and contemporary and ensure diverse coverage, including from beyond Western sociology - Thoughtfully updated and refreshed layout and visual features. Accompanying online resources for this title can be found at bloomsburyonlineresources.com/discovering-sociology-2e. These resources are designed to support teaching and learning when using this textbook and are available at no extra cost.

The history of bourgeois modernity is a history of the Enemy. This book is a radical exploration of an Enemy that has recently emerged from within security documents released by the US security state: the Universal Adversary. The Universal Adversary is now central to emergency planning in general and, more specifically, to security preparations for future attacks. But an attack from who, or what? This book – the first to appear on the topic – shows how the concept of the Universal Adversary draws on several key figures in the history of ideas, said to pose a threat to state power and capital accumulation. Within the Universal Adversary there lies the problem not just of the ‘terrorist’ but, more generally, of the ‘subversive’, and what the emergency planning documents refer to as the ‘disgruntled worker’. This reference reveals the conjoined power of the contemporary mobilisation of security and the defence of capital. But it also reveals much more. Taking the figure of the disgruntled worker as its starting point, the book introduces some of this worker’s close cousins – figures often regarded not simply as a threat to security and capital but as nothing less than the Enemy of all Mankind: the Zombie, the Devil and the Pirate. In situating these figures of enmity within debates about security and capital, the book engages an extraordinary variety of issues that now comprise a contemporary politics of security. From crowd control to contagion, from the witch-hunt to the apocalypse, from pigs to intellectual property, this book provides a compelling analysis of the ways in which security and capital are organized against nothing less than the ‘Enemies of all Mankind’.
On the morning after he has celebrated his 60th birthday party at a celebrity-filled party, Ned Marriott is in bed with his partner, Emma, when there's a knock on the door. Detectives from the London police force's 'Operation Millpond' have come to arrest him over an allegation of sexual assault. Ned is one of the country's best-known historians - teaching at a leading university, advising governments and making top-rating TV documentaries - but this 'historic' claim from someone the cops insist on calling 'the victim' threatens him with personal and professional ruin and potential imprisonment. Professor Marriott would normally turn for support to Tom Pimm, his closest friend at the university, but Tom has just been informed that a secret investigation has raised anonymous complaints, which may end Dr Pimm's career. Swinging between fear, bewilderment and anger, Ned and Tom must try to defend themselves against the allegations, and hope that no others are made. The two men's families and friends are forced to question what they know and think. Can the complainants, detectives, HR teams, journalists and Tweeters who are driving the stories all be seeing smoke that has no fire behind it? By turns shocking and comic, reportorial and thoughtful, The Allegations startlingly and heart-breakingly captures a contemporary culture in which allegations are easily made and reputations casually destroyed. Asking readers to decide who they believe, it explores a modern nightmare that could happen, in some way, to anyone whose view of personal history may differ from someone else's.
One girl missing. One girl dead. A stunning new novel from one of Britain's most original crime writers, Dead Pretty finds Detective Sergeant Aector McAvoy and Detective Superintendent Trish Pharaoh grappling with vigilantes, unsolved murders, and a killer far too close to home. While a colleague struggles to solve the recent killing of a man too vile to have mourners, Aector McAvoy, Detective Sergeant of the Humberside Police's murder squad, is still haunted by the past. His devotion to his cases is unshakeable, but it’s been nine months since Hannah Kelly disappeared in the quiet English countryside, and it is becoming harder to convince himself that she is just missing instead of dead... especially when another young woman is found brutally murdered. As McAvoy looks for connections between the women, his boss Trish Pharaoh is preoccupied with troubles of her own. Reuben Hollow--a man convicted of murder with the help of perjured testimony from the Humberside Police--has just been released from prison after a high-profile wrongful conviction suit, putting Pharaoh's reputation at stake. But when her house is broken into and her children threatened, she soon learns it is not only her good name that’s in danger. As the cases intertwine and Pharaoh’s behavior becomes more erratic, McAvoy must question who he can trust if he is to uncover Hannah's fate and find justice for the dead--without joining them himself. Gritty, atmospheric, and endlessly entertaining, David Mark's Dead Pretty is an absorbing, twisty ride readers won’t soon forget.
