At the time of Christ, world politics was an ebb and flow of colliding empires and forces. The world knew only dynastic succession and rule by force. Israel was swept up in this world. Her expectations of deliverance, while diverse, had in common the anticipation of violent liberation by an alliance of God, the expected one (Theo), and Israel's forces. Her vision included the subjugation of the world to Yahweh. Any messianic claimant would be expected to fulfill this hope. Mark's story of Jesus must be read against such expectations of military power. Mark knows that Jesus' plan of salvation differed radically from this. Rather than liberation through revolution, it involved deliverance through humble, loving service and cross-bearing. However, the disciples follow Jesus but do not understand Jesus' purpose. They constantly expect war. So, the Gospel is then read from Mark's full understanding and the disciples' flawed perspective. In this first volume of Jesus in a World of Colliding Empires, Keown backgrounds Mark and the political situations of the world at the time. He then unpacks Mark 1:1--8:29 as Jesus seeks to show the disciples he is Messiah while drawing out the deep irony of their incomprehension.

If the reader has been following my writing in real time then I would hope that they would have developed a real time rapport with the Holy Spirit by now so as to simply be able to ask their Counselor if my doctrine and experiences are truth. May the Lord convince the reader of any such thing that I not provoke ego, for I have a terrible fear of being an offence or stumbling block (Mt18:6), or of leading one astray (Jm3:1). That I may be acquitted of any wrongdoing done unintentionally or in ignorance, please be encouraged again to be prayerful about what is read and heard; always testing the spirits (1Jn4:1-3) to its validity and trustworthiness.In conjunction with that, the Lord has permitted me to encourage another test of sorts. A putting out of the fleeces (Jdg6:36-38), if you will. The last time I put out this fleece, the Lord showed up. Here it is....As Jesus gave Peter the keys to kingdom of Heaven (Mt16:19), He desires to give you, the reader, a key as well. Therefore, should you find yourself inundated with "locksmith" by perhaps a frequent passing van or a constant misplacing of keys, when that happens then please regard my words. Whatever the means the Lord uses get the reader's attention on 'locksmith', I do pray that the miracle is a coincidence too large to be ignored. ~Mark Orava

Starting with the Gospels is one of the best ways to begin a study of the Bible and starting with the words of Jesus makes the challenge an even more exciting. After all, because of the fact that He is the Son of God, wouldn't studying his words, be the best way to start?For centuries, the Gospel of Jesus Christ has been preached throughout the world. His teachings have been taught in nearly every language, dialect and nation, astonishing the wise and humbling the proud. Christ's teachings focused on love: “Love one another as I have loved you” and “Do unto others as you would have them do to you”. When Jesus was asked which of the Ten Commandments the greatest commandment is, He replies, “You will love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with your entire mind; this is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it, you will love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets”.While reading His words, let us focus on what He says. Do we truly live as He taught? Do we follow in His footsteps? The word “Christian” means “Follower of Christ”. Let's learn what He taught us and then follow what He said. The world is watching us; it was once said by Mahatma Gandhi that if India would ever truly become a Christian nation, it would be because of the Christ of the Christians and not because of the Christians of the Christ. Christians today have not left the greatest impression on the world. Let's be true followers of Christ and live by His words. Only then will the world know what a Christian truly is. As the song says, “They will know we are Christians by our love.”Read carefully His words and then study the context in which He was speaking. Review the questions carefully and answer them as honestly as you can. Enjoy your study of Christ's words.

The goal of this book has always been to put people in touch with the one that should be teaching them; knowing full well it's not me. A simple practical how-to manual; written with enough entertainment/allure to capture the reader long enough to convince them of the necessity to seek God; to show what surrender might look like; and hopefully compel them into a similar discipline/action. And I had always hoped that this book would be able to offer something to any reader, regardless of where they were, even if it is just pure entertaining fantasy to a non-believer.
