***FOREWORD BY FABIO CAPELLO*** Since their first appearance in the competition in 1950, England's World Cup story has been one of broken dreams, bad luck, shock losses and penalty nightmares, with one shining exception in 1966, when they famously won the Cup after beating Germany 4-2. In Three Lions Versus the World, Mark Pougatch talks to those who have shaped England's World Cup odyssey, from Brazil 1950 when England lost to the amateurs of America, through the triumph of 1966 and the subsequent failure to retain the Cup in 1970, to the spirit-sapping quarter-final defeats in Japan 2002 and Germany 2006. Household names such as Sir Tom Finney, Don Howe, Martin Peters, Trevor Brooking, Gary Lineker, Tony Adams, Glenn Hoddle and Danny Mills share their personal recollections of playing for England both on and off the pitch in the World Cup. Some reveal how they were affected by the demands placed upon them and by the mounting pressure of expectation from the English public. Others comment candidly on the myriad controversies to befall the England squad over the years. Massive highs are recounted and crushing lows painfully recollected. The contributors are united in the pride they shared in wearing the Three Lions shirt for their country in this most special of tournaments. The players' stories and anecdotes woven around the narrative of the World Cup itself, this is an unbeatable, entertaining and enlightening journey through half a century of English World Cup action that no football fan can afford to miss.
The book that inspired Channel Nine's Underbelly: Chopper From streetfighter to standover man, gunman to underworld executioner, Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read was earmarked for death a dozen times but somehow lived to tell the tale. This is it. Chopper: From The Inside became a best-seller on its release in 1991, spawning a series of books that have today sold over 500,000 copies around the world. Chopper also inspired an acclaimed feature film, countless art and stage shows and, in 2018, the major Channel Nine TV series Underbelly: Chopper. From The Inside is the first shot in the Chopper canon - written from his gaol cell and laced with the brutal humour that made this Australian crime commando a true legend of the underworld.
Killing becomes a twisted team sport in this “smart, fast-paced procedural” from the award-winning author of Sleepyhead (Booklist). It was a vicious, calculated murder. The killer selected his victim at London’s Euston station, followed her home on the tube, strangled her to death in front of her child. At the same time, killed in the same way, a second body is discovered at the back of King’s Cross station. It is a grisly coincidence that eerily echoes the murders of two other women, stabbed to death months before on the same day. DI Tom Thorne sees the link and comes to a horrifying conclusion. This is not a serial killer that the police are up against—this is two of them. Finding the body used to be the worst part of the job, but not any more. Now each time a body is found, Thorne knows that somewhere out there is a second victim waiting to be discovered. But while the killers’ methods might be the same, their manner is strikingly different. Thorne comes to realize that he is hunting very different people—one ruthless and in control, the other submissive, compliant, terrified. Thorne must catch a man whose need to manipulate is as great as his need to kill. A man who will threaten those closest to Thorne himself and show him that the ability to inspire terror is the deadliest weapon of all . . . “One of the most consistently entertaining, insightful crime writers working today.” —Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl “Mark Billingham is one of my favorite new writers.” —Harlan Coben, bestselling author of Run Away
This book offers a post-structuralist critique of the problems associated with modernist accounts of environmental harm and regulation. Through a notably detailed micro-political analysis of forest conflict, the author explores the limits of academic commentary on environmental issues and suggests that the traditional variables of political economy, race and gender need to be recast in light of four key modalities through which 'the environment' and 'environmental damage' are (re)produced. Focusing on vision, speed, lexicon and affect, the book engages a new ethic for categorizing and regulating 'nature' and challenges criminologists, sociologists, cultural theorists and others to reconsider what it is possible to say and do about environmental problems.
A unique 50th anniversary collection of superlative writing and new football thinking. A first-ever oral history of ’66 combined with match reports provided by writers from each of the countries England played, create a highly original view of the tournament - how the fans watched the games, the stadia, the newspaper and TV reporting are each revisited. The politics, music and fashion of ’66 are examined too, exploring the forces of fan resistance in England and Germany that have found common cause in opposition to the corporate take over of the game, as well as the entirely new ranking system that calculates England’s fall, and occasional rise, from 1966 to 2016, showing who has overtaken England and why.

I met my husband on the same day I committed my very last murder. There's a joke in there somewhere, about ending two men's lives.' Olivia Hodges used to do horrible things - back when she worked for a Spanish crime syndicate - but she fled that life and moved home to Australia, building a family in the hippie, hipster community of the Dandenong Ranges. When a small-time criminal gang brings tragedy to her family, superstitious Olivia believes it's the universe demanding payment for her crimes. She wants revenge, but has to get it without adding to her karmic debt. So she creates situations where these bad men get themselves killed through their anger, ego and greed - all while trying to mislead the cops long enough to finish what she started.
It doesn't really matter who you support. Football is a cruel, cruel game. All of us fans have had moments of shock, disappointment, and feeling like a right knobhead. We want our teams to play like winners who’ll fight for the badge to their last breath. More often, there's so many clowns on the pitch we think the circus is in town. We've endured abject surrenders in the pissing down rain, watched multi-millionaire managers lose the plot, and signed players who couldn't pass a parcel, all to the sound of Michael Owen's 'expert' analysis. Season after bloody season. It stings so much your team might as well be sponsored by Dettol. Why do we do it to ourselves? There’s a lot to love I guess. Nothing will ever emulate the high that a major win or seeing your team lift a trophy brings. Take Manchester United winning the treble: footballing perfection. And nothing else will ever come close. Life doesn’t get any better than that. As I talk you through everything from transfers to trophies to touchline tantrums, join me as I give my definitive take on football. There's a lot to get through, so take my hand like an over-eager mascot and walk with me out of the tunnel into the glaring floodlights of what it means to be a fan... ...and how to survive it.
I've known a hundred good street fighters and a thousand not so good ones. But in a lifetime I've met only a handful of freak street fighters, the best of the best. They all died young. The freaks always do.' For more than 25 years Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read preyed on Australia's underbelly. Chopper was the criminal all other criminals feared, a toecutter who extorted protection money from rich drug dealers while holding them at gunpoint. An ex-convict, rapper and bestselling author, Chopper is one of Australia's most controversial public figures. In No Tears for a Tough Guy, Chopper once again presents a selection of his short stories featuring his trademark style and the authenticity that only comes from real life experience. Featuring his stories 'A Great Day for a Shoot 'em Up', 'Taking Care of Business' and 'No Tears for a Tough Guy', this collection gives an even greater insight into the mind of the most infamous criminal in Australia.

It was just after dawn on Thursday, November 14, 1991. The hatch on the cell door slid back. I could see the screw's face through the slit. I've seen better heads on a pig dog, but this time I could have kissed him.' Underworld standover man and executioner Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read was released from Pentridge Prison in November, 1991, vowing never to return. He became an instant celebrity when his autobiography Chopper: From the Inside hit the bestseller lists (it also holds the record as Australia's most shop-lifted book). Six months later, he was back in jail charged with the shooting of a biker, and busy writing his second volume of memoirs. In this sequel, Chopper gives us more stories of crime and criminals that made his first book an international publishing sensation, from bookie robberies to hitmen, slavery and kidnapping. Written with dark humour and an intimate knowledge of some of Australia's most notorious criminals and crimes, Hits and Memories is a unique look at Australia's underbelly.
Understanding and predicting species diversity in ecological communities is one of the great challenges in community ecology. Popular recent theory contends that the traits of species are "neutral" or unimportant to coexistence, yet abundant experimental evidence suggests that multiple species are able to coexist on the same limiting resource precisely because they differ in key traits, such as body size, diet, and resource demand. This book presents a new theory of coexistence that incorporates two important aspects of biodiversity in nature--scale and spatial variation in the supply of limiting resources. Introducing an innovative model that uses fractal geometry to describe the complex physical structure of nature, Mark Ritchie shows how species traits, particularly body size, lead to spatial patterns of resource use that allow species to coexist. He explains how this criterion for coexistence can be converted into a "rule" for how many species can be "packed" into an environment given the supply of resources and their spatial variability. He then demonstrates how this rule can be used to predict a range of patterns in ecological communities, such as body-size distributions, species-abundance distributions, and species-area relations. Ritchie illustrates how the predictions closely match data from many real communities, including those of mammalian herbivores, grasshoppers, dung beetles, and birds. This book offers a compelling alternative to "neutral" theory in community ecology, one that helps us better understand patterns of biodiversity across the Earth.
This book is a work of literary fiction – all persons believing to recognize themselves are advised to seek professional guidance.' Underworld executioner Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read became a bestselling author following the release of his autobiography Chopper: From the Inside. Drug dealers, pimps, thieves and armed robbers all lived in fear of the standover man, now Australia's most notorious celebrity. Chopper's memoirs, written behind bars, chart his rise to infamy on the streets and in jail. Bleak, brutal and laced with dark humour, Chopper's story gives the Australian public a truthful look at some of the country's most dangerous criminals. Featuring examples of Chopper's poetry and fiction, The Singing Defective is a prime example of why Chopper enjoys such success in Australia's literary scene.

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact date the magic appeared in the FA Cup. Perhaps it was there from the beginning when the very first ball was kicked, or perhaps it first appeared in 1923 – the year the final was first played at Wembley, known then as the Empire Stadium. Just as the Premier and Champions Leagues were battling it out for the top spot, the magic disappeared, much to the fans disappointment. Can the Football Association bring the magic back to the cup, or will they be powerless to act to restore the magic, like old wizards who no longer possess the magic touch?
£80 million in debt and with financial meltdown a matter of weeks away, in July 2003 Chelsea Football Club were saved from almost certain penury by Roman Abramovich, a reclusive young billionaire that few people outside his native Russia had heard of. Making History, Not Reliving It recounts the first decade of Roman’s rule in London mirrored against a backdrop of an ever-changing, social-media-driven, angst and envy-ridden world where the revolving door of change seems to spin as fast as that of the manager’s at Stamford Bridge. Granular season-by-season detail of exactly how Chelsea amassed three league titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, a Champions League and a Europa League in ten eventful years is entertainingly supplemented with news and entertainment bulletins and rounded off with enlightening and diverse points of view provided by a broad cross section of supporters unified by their blissful enjoyment of the desperate jealousy of rival fans now only able to relive the history that their own precious club’s once made.
This book is about my journey through the Australian prison system. You'll have heard a few of these stories before, but not like this. It's a step-by-step history of my twenty three years behind bars; what day to day life was really like in jail, what I did to survive and why I'll never go back. It's not a nice story. I was not a nice prisoner..." Mark "Chopper" Read is over fifty years old and has spent almost half that time in prison. He is a man who knows the Australian prison system better than any other. He knows how the definitive school of hard knocks turns juvenile delinquents into hardened criminals. How it feels to be thrust into a world of violent psychopaths and be changed, irrevocably, into the worst of their number. He also knows how it feels to get stabbed (a massive punch with a cold pin in the middle). How it feels to lose your ears to a prison-issue razor blade (a gurgling sound like a little brook). How it feels to fight, maim and mutilate to stay alive. And what it means when that way of life no longer makes sense. This book is Chopper's redemption. It is the real story of the man, the criminal and the prisoner, told with black humour and surprising insight.

Crims and screws agree on one thing: that the people who run prisons wouldn't know if a tram was up them unless you rang the bell.' How to Shoot Friends and Influence People, Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read's third book, was written behind bars as Chopper faced life in prison for a shooting he claimed he didn't commit. For this book, Chopper obtained confidential and extensive prison files relating to him under the Freedom of Information Act. These included psychological assessments, plus prison classification and discipline records. They provide a fascinating insight into how this maverick criminal dealt with the prison system over two decades. Featuring the infamous story of Tanya and Eddy, Chopper's coming-of-age yarn from his 18th birthday, plus reflections on the end of his long-term relationship and what it's like to be the most famous author-in-residence at Risdon Prison, this third volume of his memoirs contains more tales of the criminal underworld told in Chopper's unique style.
On the final day of the 2002 / 2003 football season Chelsea Football Club recorded a famous 2-1 victory over Liverpool, thereby qualifying to play in the following seasons European Champions League competition. Resigned to losing Gianfranco Zola, who had recently been voted the club's greatest ever player, and with no money available for Chelsea's charismatic coach Claudio Ranieri to strengthen the squad, the prospects for the coming season looked to be self-limiting. That had been the general consensus of Marco, Young Dave, Ugly John, Ossie and the rest of the Chelsea Gate 17 boys as they frittered away the summer months waiting for the new European campaign to begin. Enter Roman Abramovich. The billionaire Russian oligarch purchased the club and financed a spending spree unprecedented in the history of the game. 'Glorious unpredictability,' that's what Marco called it ...that Chelsea factor, you just never knew what was going to happen next. Whatever it was, the Gate 17 boys had no intention of missing any of it ...they'd even planned to make a spiritual pilgrimage to Sardinia to watch their hero Zola. Over Land and Sea re-writes the current trend in depressingly violent football literature.
What if there was an author who wrote about crime and therefore relied upon death to earn a living.' Buried bodies, buried guns, buried money and buried truths. Only one man who's been on the inside tells it like it is about the Australian hit men, bikie wars and drug syndicates. While his peers suffered violent deaths, Chopper outlived them all to give the real story. This is the life of the standover man who went from ex-con to national icon. The Popcorn Gangster tells of the psychology of fear and the Calabrian contract straight from former street fighter and now bestselling author, Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read.

Only a drunk or a madman would survive – luckily, on that occasion, I was both.' Ex-convict, author and celebrity Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read gives readers a unique insight into Australia's sordid criminal underworld. Written in Chopper's unique style and featuring his characteristic dark humour, the ninth instalment of Chopper's memoirs tells the story of the Tassie Chainsaw Massacre and explains why drinking Crown Lagers is the key to winning a serious pub brawl. The Final Cut continues the incredible story of the self-confessed executioner, who knew receiving a phone call from an old friend meant another associate was soon to be a walking corpse.
Blue Moon traces a season in the life of Manchester City. Not just any season, but 1998-99, when the once-proud club, with two League Championships and four FA Cup wins to its name - not to mention a phenomenal fan base - was forced to battle the likes of Macclesfield Town, Colchester United and Wigan Athletic in English football's third flight. Mark Hodkinson was involved in every aspect of the club through a long, stirring season, one which culminated in the euphoria of promotion: mingling with players, ex-players, directors, office staff and fans, he was constantly on the look-out for the unusual, the offbeat, the hopeful and the heartbreaking. Through it all, he remained impartial, steadfastly resisting the temptation to become a mere pawn for the club's PR operation. Originally commissioned as a series of weekly articles for The Times newspaper, Hodkinson's column soon acquired cult status among fans. Now, in Blue Moon, the author has brought these articles together and, along with a considerable number of further anecdotes, both comical and moving, provides an unprecedented insight into the passionate community that is Manchester City FC.

How can we reconcile belief in a loving God with the suffering of innocent human beings and earthly creatures in the natural world? This question, as old as the Old Testament’s book of Job, has been mainly grappled with over the centuries by learned theologians and philosophers. But in this groundbreaking work, the author is sent on a journey across thousands of miles to speak to Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians like himself following the 2004 colossal tsunami waves that killed more than 230,000 people. In the wake of such carnage, why do some people lose their faith while others emerge with it intact and strengthened? Are these events in the natural world really linked to divine justice as “punishment for sin”? And if not, what are the best possible explanations for why an intelligent and caring deity would fashion a world in which babies can die of leukemia and the elderly fall victim to deadly viruses such as COVID-19? This account will offer profound food for thought for troubled believers and curious agnostics alike.
