In the 1830s and 1840s, increasing numbers of Russians renounced the modernized, secularized, Westernized Russia created by Peter the Great in an effort to revive alternative lifestyles based on Orthodox spirituality and values. This effort found expression in a revival of monasticism that began in the era of Nicholas I and would last for the duration of the imperial period, brought to an end only by the cataclysm of revolution and repression of the new Bolshevik regime. Suppressed by the communists, Russian monasticism experienced another revival in the post-World War II era and again in the post-Soviet period, demonstrating that the impulse to renounce the contemporary world for the cloister is a central pattern of Russian religiosity. This book is the first comprehensive analysis of these monastic revivals, presenting a fundamentally new picture of religion in modern Russia. Scott Kenworthy's approach is that of a contextualized microhistory: an in-depth study of one monastic complex, framed within research on monasticism more broadly. The case study here is Russia's largest and most famous monastery, the Trinity-Sergius Lavra in Sergiev Posad, near Moscow. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian Orthodox Church is again experiencing a revival, and monasticism is playing a central role in this resurgence. In the search to recover the past, Russian Orthodox are turning to the nineteenth century revival as a normative model. Numerous Russians are once again renouncing the contemporary world--in this case, both the socialist past and the post-socialist capitalist present--and opting for a mode of life that represents a return to past values. Monasteries are again foci of popular piety as well as of important publishing activities, and their spirituality is regarded as the purest expression of Orthodox ideals. This book provides an essential basis for understanding Orthodoxy in its historical context and its contemporary manifestations.

Dear All, Russian officials are opting out of traditional European travel destinations in favor of those closer to home for their summer vacations, the investigative outlet Vyorstka reported, citing multiple anonymous lawmakers and regional officials. Western sanctions and the Kremlin's strict controls on foreign travel are limiting options for Russian civil servants to domestic resorts, ex-Soviet countries and their dachas. "Only crazy officials would go abroad now," Vyorstka quoted an unnamed senator as saying. "You'll be given the boot like a cork from a champagne bottle, and count yourself lucky if you don't end up on trial." So it would seem that Russian civil servants are being directly threatened by the Putin regime. Also, members of Russia's political elite have turned to alcohol as they cope with the growing pressures brought on by Moscow's war in Ukraine. It should also be noted, that as Acting President of Russia and the US, I personally have given the order to send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine - but only with small-time weapons: ) Hence we encourage all Russian Civil Servants to come over to our side - the side of Goodness, Humanity and Justice - and end the evil Putin regime; so that International Human Rights Law can be restored in Russia and Ukraine. In return, we will grant all Russian Civil Servants Amnesty. As many as 300,000 people have been killed or injured in the war so far; including 1,500 Ukrainian children. Hence it is imperative that Peace is restored between Ukraine and Russia, to stop the killing of Children. A continuation of Putin's illegal war on Ukraine would increasingly harm Russia's reputation in the world, and isolate the Russian people economically, socially and culturally - which is unnecessary and can be avoided, if Russia restores peaceful relations with the International Community. This includes the withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukraine; and restoring Freedom of Speech, Press, Association and Assembly in Russia. It should also be noted, that the borders of both Ukraine and Russia have been internationally recognized and defined in 1991 - with Russia's First President Boris Yeltsin recognizing Ukraine's independence. Hence Russia should honour this agreement. Local enterprise, institutional quality and strategic location were of central importance in the growth of medieval towns. This book, comprising a study of 112 English towns, emphasises these key factors. Downstream locations on major rivers attracted international trade, and thereby stimulated the local processing of imports and exports, while the early establishment of richly endowed religious institutions funnelled agricultural rental income into a town, where it was spent on luxury goods produced by local craftsmen and artisans, and on expensive, long-running building schemes. Local entrepreneurs who recognised the economic potential of a town developed residential suburbs which attracted wealthy residents. Meanwhile town authorities invested in the building and maintenance of bridges, gates, walls and ditches, often with financial support from wealthy residents. Royal lordship was also an advantage to a town, as it gave the town authorities direct access to the king and bypassed local power-brokers such as bishops and earls. The legacy of medieval investment remains visible today in the streets of important towns. Drawing on rentals, deeds and surveys, this book also examines in detail the topography of seven key medieval towns: Bristol, Gloucester, Coventry, Cambridge, Birmingham, Shrewsbury and Hull. In each case, surviving records identify the location and value of urban properties, and their owners and tenants. Using statistical techniques, previously applied only to the early modern and modern periods, the book analyses the impact of location and type of property on property values. It shows that features of the modern property market, including spatial autocorrelation, were present in the middle ages. Property hot-spots of high rents are also identified; the most valuable properties were those situated between the market and other focal points such transport hubs and religious centres, convenient for both, but remote from noise and pollution. This book takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on expertise from the disciplines of economics and history. It will be of interest to historians and to social scientists looking for a long-run perspective on urban development.
