The Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace is a national icon, yet few have heard of its sculptor, Thomas Brock. He left school at 12 to be an apprentice at the Worcester Royal Porcelain Works, then joined the London studio of John Henry Foley. He completed the figure of the Prince Consort for the Albert Memorial after Foleys death. One of the young sculptors encouraged by Sir Frederic Leighton, he became famous for his lifelike portrait statues of Queen Victoria, Edward VII, Gladstone, Millais and other public figures. Chosen in 1901 as sole sculptor of the Victoria Memorial, he was knighted by King George V at its unveiling in 1911. Brocks remarkable story is told by his son Frederick in this entertaining biography, written in the 1920s and now published by permission of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The TUC Overseas (1986) traces the decisions made by the Trades Union Congress in response to domestic and external influences and events, from its establishment of a joint international committee with the Labour Party in 1917 to the first congress of the World Federation of Trade Unions in 1945. In this crucial period the TUC played a part in the establishment of the International Labour Organization and in the reconstitution of the International Federation of Trade Unions and the Labour and Socialist International after the Great War, in the rivalry with the Communist International and the Red International of Labour Unions, and in the reunification of the international trade union movement in the final years of the Second World War. This international framework and the Labour Party’s imperial policy are treated here in relation to the TUC’s work first in India and then in the colonies.
At the time of this book’s original publication in 1938 the state if Kenya was exciting much interest and controversy and Miss Dilley’s work was recongnized as an important contribution towards understanding what was at once the most fascinating and the most difficult of all the colonial problems facing the British government. This book is a specific study of British policy in Kenya during this period as the author felt this was particularly pertinent in light of the complexity of the situation in Kenya. The work begins with a survey of the geography, racial groups, history and government organizations of Kenya Colony and Miss Dilley than traces the development and application of the policy which the British Government expressly undertook to maintain – a trusteeship for native races. She also gives a fair and lucid account of the growth of political organizations among the European settlers and describes the history of such past controversies as the ‘Indian Question’ and land alienation. Finally there is a brief section on the application of the principle of trusteeship which deals with the labour question and the industrial and agricultural problems of the colony.

Between the mid-fourteenth century and the Poor Laws of 1598 and 1601, English poor relief moved toward a more coherent and comprehensive network of support. Marjorie McIntosh's study, the first to trace developments across that time span, focuses on three types of assistance: licensed begging and the solicitation of charitable alms; hospitals and almshouses for the bedridden and elderly; and the aid given by parishes. It explores changing conceptions of poverty and charity and altered roles for the church, state and private organizations in the provision of relief. The study highlights the creativity of local people in responding to poverty, cooperation between national levels of government, the problems of fraud and negligence, and mounting concern with proper supervision and accounting. This ground-breaking work challenges existing accounts of the Poor Laws, showing that they addressed problems with forms of aid already in use rather than creating a new system of relief.
