This book provides Pentecostals with the necessary equipment and motivation to contribute to one of Africa's important ethical challenges, LGBTIQ+ people and Africa's homophobic reaction to them. The study is aimed at Christian believers and pastors, to empower them with relevant information about the issue. The issue is discussed in terms of existing biological, psychological, anthropological, sociological, philosophical and queer theory knowledge, along with a study of the biblical texts, in order to answer the question, what should a responsible African Pentecostal response be towards the LGBTIQ+ issue, and what should Pentecostals' attitude be towards such people?
Latin eugenics was a scientific, cultural and political programme designed to biologically empower modern European and American nations once commonly described as 'Latin', sharing genealogical, linguistic, religious, and cultural origins. Latin Eugenics in Comparative Perspective offers a comparative, nuanced approach to eugenics as a scientific programme as well as a cultural and political phenomenon. It examines the commonalities of eugenics in 'Latin' Europe and Latin America. As a program to achieve the social and political goals of modern welfare systems, Latin eugenics strongly influenced the complex relationship of the state to the individual. Drawing on a wide range of primary and secondary sources in many languages, this book offers the first history of Latin eugenics in Europe and the Americas.
While every music lover senses the power and truth that reside in music, very few actually approach music as a path to cosmic knowledge. But the idea that the universe is created out of sound is an ancient one. This book brings together three contemporary German thinkers who exemplify this tradition: Marius Schneider, Rudolf Haase, and Hans Erhard Lauer.
This research monograph aims at presenting an integrated assessment approach to describe, model, evaluate and improve the eco-efficiency of existing and new grinding processes and systems. Various combinations of grinding process parameters and system configurations can be evaluated based on the eco-efficiency. The book presents the novel concept of empirical and physical modeling of technological, economic and environmental impact indicators. This includes the integrated evaluation of different grinding process and system scenarios. The book is a valuable read for research experts and practitioners in the field of eco-efficiency of manufacturing processes but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students.
This book represents views, frameworks and practices on stimulating and realising our optimal potential as human beings in the context of a workplace where there is a desire to achieve shared goals and aspirations in order to accomplish positive economic, societal and environmental impacts and outcomes. It describes a vision of how life and work in organisations could be. We describe a new kind of organisation. Being a good person and doing good things while making profit are a real possibility for those management innovators who think beyond immediate trade-offs. In this book we explore management innovation as core study field and arena for re-inventing and re-imagining how people in organisations could execute management activities such as planning, organising, leading and controlling for multiple stakeholder satisfaction and benefits. Work can be much more joyful and fulfilling than we think, but it requires courage from us to take responsibility when freedom is offered.
This manual contains exercises, self-assessments, and debriefings which ask the participant to reflect on their work experiences and create their own knowledge and guidelines for new experiences. Addressing generic and specific skills required for experiential learning in the workplace, it may be used by students and lecturers individually or in a class, prior to entering the workplace for experiential learning and/or permanent employment.
Brings the reader to an overview of the subject as a whole and to the point where they can specialize and enter supervised laboratory research Provides a balance between aspects of solid state and semiconductor physics and the concepts of various semiconductor devices and their applications in electric and photonic devices. Proffers explicit formulas (with the help of Mathematica) for as many as possible results, going beyond current textbook equations, thus makes easier to understand for undergrads.
Command and Control (C2) is the set of organizational and technical attributes and processes by which an enterprise marshals and employs human, physical, and information resources to solve problems and accomplish missions.C2 Re-envisioned: The Future of the Enterprise identifies four interrelated megatrends that are individually and collectively shaping the state of the art and practice of C2 as well as the mission challenges we face. These megatrends the book examines are: Big Problems—manifested in part as increasing complexity of both endeavors and enterprises, as military establishments form coalitions with each other, and partnerships with various civilian agencies and non-governmental organizations Robustly Networked Environments—enabled by the extremely broad availability of advanced information and communications technologies (ICT) that place unprecedented powers of information creation, processing, and distribution in the hands of almost anyone who wants them—friend and foe alike Ubiquitous Data—the unprecedented volumes of raw and processed information with which human actors and C2 systems must contend Organizational alternatives—as decentralized, net-enabled approaches to C2 have been made more feasible by technology. The book analyzes historical examples and experimental evidence to determine the critical factors that make C2 go wrong and how to get it right. Successful enterprises in the future will be those that can reconfigure their approaches in an agile manner. Offering fresh perspectives on this subject of critical importance, this book provides the understanding you will need to choose your organizational approaches to suit the mission and the conditions at hand.
A travelogue revealing the hidden stories of Naples. In recent years Naples has become, for better or worse, the new destination in Italy. While many of its more unusual features are on display for all to see, the stories behind them remain largely hidden. In Marius Kociejowski’s portrait of this baffling city, the serpent can be many things: Vesuvius, the mafia-like Camorra, the outlying Phlegrean Fields (which, geologically speaking, constitute the second most dangerous area on the planet). It is all these things that have, at one time or another, put paid to the higher aspirations of Neapolitans themselves. Naples is simultaneously the city of light, sometimes blindingly so, and the city of darkness, although often the stuff of cliché. The boundary that separates death from life is porous in the extreme: the dead inhabit the world of the living and vice versa. The Serpent Coiled in Naples is a travelogue, a meditation on mortality, and much else besides.
This ground-breaking text/reference diverges from the traditional view that computer vision (for image analysis) and string processing (for text mining) are separate and unrelated fields of study, propounding that images and text can be treated in a similar manner for the purposes of information retrieval, extraction and classification. Highlighting the benefits of knowledge transfer between the two disciplines, the text presents a range of novel similarity-based learning (SBL) techniques founded on this approach. Topics and features: describes a variety of SBL approaches, including nearest neighbor models, local learning, kernel methods, and clustering algorithms; presents a nearest neighbor model based on a novel dissimilarity for images; discusses a novel kernel for (visual) word histograms, as well as several kernels based on a pyramid representation; introduces an approach based on string kernels for native language identification; contains links for downloading relevant open source code.
Serving as an introduction to one of the "hottest" topics in financial crime, the Value Added Tax (VAT) fraud, this new and original book aims to analyze and decrypt the fraud and explore multi-disciplinary avenues, thereby exposing nuances and shades that remain concealed by traditional taxation oriented researches. Quantifying the impact of the fraud on the real economy underlines the structural damages propagated by this crime in the European Union. The ‘fruadsters’ benefit when policy changes are inflicted in an economic space without a fully fledged legal framework. Geopolitical events like the creation of the Eurasian Union and 'Brexit' are analyzed from the perspective of the VAT fraud, thereby underlining the foreseeable risks of such historical turnarounds. In addition, this book also provides a unique collection of case studies that depict the main characteristics of VAT fraud. Introduction to VAT Fraud will be of interest to students at an advanced level, academics and reflective practitioners. It addresses the topics with regards to banking and finance law, international law, criminal law, taxation, accounting, and financial crime. It will be of value to researchers, academics, professionals, and students in the fields of law, financial crime, technology, accounting and taxation.
Case Studies in Elementary and Secondary Curriculum provides 21 real-world cases that provide the opportunity for educators to explore the different perspectives that different stakeholders take on the concept of curriculum. The cases examine how curriculum comes to life as a complex process including the whole continuum--ranging from design to implementation and evaluation--and how this process can be analyzed and changed.
Rights-based Litigation, Urban Governance and Social Justice in South Africa considers the overlap between legal and everyday struggles for social and spatial justice in the particular context of Johannesburg, South Africa. Drawing from literature across disciplines of law, urban geography and urban planning, as well as from reported case-law concerning the invocation of constitutional rights in Johannesburg and other South African cities, the book critically examines whether, and to what extent, the invocation of legal rights before South African courts have contributed to the advancement of social justice in the city. It considers the impact of the legal assertion of different constituent aspects of the so-called "right to the city" on the many people simultaneously performing the right, the governance structures responsible for enabling and facilitating its enjoyment and, thirdly, the physical place in which it is performed. Drawing broad conclusions on the utility of rights-based litigation for the achievement of social change and spatial justice, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of South Africa, constitutional law, human rights law, regulatory law, sociology of rights, studies of law and society, urban studies, urban geography, governance studies, and development studies.
The core of this monograph is the development of tools to derive well-posedness results in very general geometric settings for elliptic differential operators. A new generation of Calderón-Zygmund theory is developed for variable coefficient singular integral operators, which turns out to be particularly versatile in dealing with boundary value problems for the Hodge-Laplacian on uniformly rectifiable subdomains of Riemannian manifolds via boundary layer methods. In addition to absolute and relative boundary conditions for differential forms, this monograph treats the Hodge-Laplacian equipped with classical Dirichlet, Neumann, Transmission, Poincaré, and Robin boundary conditions in regular Semmes-Kenig-Toro domains. Lying at the intersection of partial differential equations, harmonic analysis, and differential geometry, this text is suitable for a wide range of PhD students, researchers, and professionals.
