A Hard Row to Hoe is a narrative novel that stems from the memoirs of its main character, Ree, born in 1941. The story is based on her recollections from the around the age of four years old to the end of the decade. The story gives a concise view of the time, history, and southern setting in which the story unfolds. The story tells of how Ree slowly learns about life under the watchful eyes of her mother, doting grandmother, and their profound religious teachings. Although shes inquisitive, the excessively protective nature of her parents and grandmother always kept her curiosities at bay. However, despite their concerns, this rather sickly, quiet, and curious child senses theres more to life and utilizes every given opportunity to learn about people outside her secluded world. Sheltered in a world of blackness, she realizes her skin is black, and shes very happy being black because everybody she knows in her little world is kindhearted and nonjudgmental. It was only when she finally ventures out into the greater society that she realizes what it means to be a little black child in America. Shockingly, her aspirations temporarily floundered when she faced the harsh reality that not all people accepted her blackness. Ree learns life can be hard and very painful and that it incorporates many different kinds of painmost devastatingly, the pain of rejection. By the storys end, she has become so resolute it dulled the pain of an unaccepting world. Assuredly, she knows the moral teachings of her mother and grandmother would always be there to help her overcome the stigmas that have been attached to black skin. It is said: theres nothing new under the sun. Subsequently, everything that goes around comes around. Moral principles that have spanned the decades are embedded within the lines of events, which will provide many teachable moments, just as its gripping conclusion will provide timeless answers to age-old problems.

Marie Mercat-Bruns, a Franco-American scholar, examines the differences in how the two countries approach discrimination. Bringing together prominent legal scholars—including Robert Post, Linda Krieger, Martha Minow, Reva Siegel, Susan Sturm, Richard Ford, and others—Mercat-Bruns demonstrates how the two nations have adopted divergent strategies. The United States continues, with mixed success at “colorblind” policies, to deal with issues of diversity in university enrollment, class action sex-discrimination lawsuits, and rampant police violence against African American men and women. In France, the country has banned the full-face veil while making efforts to present itself as a secular republic. Young men and women whose parents and grandparents came from sub-Sahara and North Africa are stuck coping with a society that fails to take into account the barriers to employment and education they face. Discrimination at Work provides an incisive comparative analysis of how the nature of discrimination in both countries has changed, now often hidden, or steeped in deep unconscious bias. While it is rare for employers in both countries to openly discriminate, deep systemic discrimination exists, rooted in structural and environmental causes and the ways each state has dealt with difference in general. Invigorating and incisive, the book examines hot-button issues such as sexual harassment; race, religious and gender discrimination; and equality for LGBT individuals, thereby delivering comparisons meant to further social equality and fundamental human rights across borders.

The book presents some examples from the lock industry ethnographies, exploring the experience of work on the assembly line in a lock factory from both the perspective of an ethnographic observer and then from the perspective of two assembly line workers themselves. It also presents a developing world example. The ethnographic observer's view is complemented and challenged by the accounts of the people rersearched. The accounts provided give a small glimpse of the many themes that arise in the workplace.

I had a fleeting thought that the tree could pose a potential danger. Within a few minutes of the thought, the tree fell through the roof of the van, right in front of where I was sitting. The entire back of the van was smooshed (from Chapter 13). Shellan, this is Lou from Bleep Loan and Trust. Gib has not made a payment in over four months and if we dont collect soon, we will repo the truck. Just letting you know theres a good possibility we will come to you for the balance owed (from Chapter 6). I interrupted the lad at some point to tell him that if he thinks he is damned by God, he obviously does not know the truth of God. I tried to share about Gods unconditional love; how God does not leave or forsake us but we are the ones who turn away. The young man did not appear to hear my words as he continued to ramble about his plight. Somewhere in all his anxiety, he stated that he had prayed for God to send him an angelfrom how he was going to hell how successful he used to be with big money, houses, and nice cars but now only a bicycle could he call his own how he was going to hell how he was going to hell he was going to hell (from Chapter 20).

For myriad reasons, breastfeeding is a fraught issue among mothers in the U.S. and other industrialized nations, and breastfeeding advocacy in particular remains a source of contention for feminist scholars and activists. Breastfeeding raises many important concerns surrounding gendered embodiment, reproductive rights and autonomy, essentializing discourses and the struggle against biology as destiny, and public policies that have the potential to support or undermine women, and mothers in particular, in the workplace. The essays in this collection engage with the varied and complicated ways in which cultural attitudes about mothering and female sexuality inform the way people understand, embrace, reject, and talk about breastfeeding, as well as with the promises and limitations of feminist breastfeeding advocacy. They attend to diffuse discourses about and cultural representations of infant feeding, all the while utilizing feminist methodologies to interrogate essentializing ideologies that suggest that women’s bodies are the “natural” choice for infant feeding.
