Birnbaum's biography has the unique distinction of being the first among many studies to pay tribute to a woman during this period. It is also one of the first titles to pay equal attention to the lives of the Conversos in Christian West Europe and in the Muslim East.

Words are not just labels for conceptual categories. Words construct conceptual categories, frame situations and influence behavior. Where do they get their meaning? This book describes how words acquire their meaning. The author argues that mechanisms based on associations, pattern detection, and feature matching processes explain how words acquire their meaning from experience and from language alike. Such mechanisms are summarized by the distributional hypothesis, a computational theory of meaning originally applied to word occurrences only, and hereby extended to extra-linguistic contexts. By arguing in favor of the cognitive foundations of the distributional hypothesis, which suggests that words that appear in similar contexts have similar meaning, this book offers a theoretical account for word meaning construction and extension in first and second language that bridges empirical findings from cognitive and computer sciences. A few years ago the Dorset Federation of Womens Institutes organised a Local History Competition. Forty- nine Institutes responded and sent in contributions ranging in length from a few paragraphs to more than a hundred pages, The late Canon Sanctuary, who acted as one of the judges, was struck by the amount of attractive material produced, and urged its publication in book form. Largely as a result of his interest the cause of local history was not allowed to fade from the minds of Institute members. They were asked to send in further items as they discovered them, and a fair amount of extra information has been collected since the close of thc competition. In editing this little book I have relied predominantly upon the material thus presented to me. For instance, Roman roof-tiles are frequently unearthed in different parts of the County, but the Corscombe and Halstock Institute mentioned such a discovery, and it is that example which has therefore been quoted. In some cases, for reasons of space, I have been obliged to choose for quotation only one or two from among a number of given instances of similar discoveries, customs or events. Naturally it has been impossible to deal comprehensively with any of the subjects touched upon in these short chapters. I have aimed only at offering some kind of explanatory sequence, showing local events against a general background. It is hoped that all Institutes will be thus encouraged to work further along various simple lines of research, and to piece together the story of their own villages. The history of the towns has, I fear, received very little attention-and this for two reasons. First, the Womens Institute movement is primarily concerned with the people of the country-side. Secondly, in comparatively recent years, a good many monographs on particular towns have been published, and these books can be easily obtained from the County Library, as well as from the bookseller. Where the towns provide links in the story which would otherwise be missing, then references have been made to them, but adequate accounts of town history must be looked for elsewhere. Again, the subject of architecture has been entirely omitted, because this book is not attempting to take the place of the ordinary guide book. But any compiler of a village history should regard it as of first importance to collect all possible information about old buildings within the parish, and old barns and cottages should receive as careful investigation as old churches and manor houses. Among many people who have given most willing help I should like to thank particularly Mr. Richard Hine, of Beaminster, for reading through many of the chapters in manuscript, and for giving me some delightful fresh material Colonel C. D. It offers evidence on a seemingly rare subject from different eras, areas, and cultures, and then uses the cross-disciplinary data to produce a new, systematic insight for the reader. Case studies shift the discussion from the contemporary focus on adolescent to parent abuse, to examining the sources of conflict during life cycles of parents and their offspring. A historical approach illuminates the variations in conflicts between parents and their offspring that are shaped by the life stages of the victims and offenders themselves across time. The book argues that parental authority has been marked by property ownership and tax paying responsibilities throughout history. The continued possession of property resulted in power, the reluctance to part with it, becoming a notable source of conflict across generations within families. Parental authority was protected by means of heavy penalties and punishments and didactic teachings in almost every society at every stage of historical development. It was also challenged constantly by children as a part of their coming into adulthood. The abuse of parents has often been connected to situations where adult children were prevented from gaining the amount of independence appropriate to their position in life. This led to disputes over authority and the legitimate grounds for that authority. Offering an insight into complicated and interconnected histories of generational conflicts and how they affect modern families in different parts of the world, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of criminology, history of crime, history of the family, family violence, homicide studies, gender studies, history of emotions, political violence, and social work.

The Politics of Memory in the Italian Populist Radical Right examines the role of colonial memory in the contemporary Italian populist radical right, which includes the Lega and Fratelli d’Italia (FdI). The book originally adopts postcolonialism as an analytical framework to critically examine which roles colonial memory plays in the Italian populist radical right. Considering the timeframe between 2013 and 2021, this book suggests that the contemporary Italian populist radical right selectively shaped its memory of the colonial past, expunging the most difficult aspects from it. The fact that the Italian populist radical right parties examined do not fully acknowledge the controversial aspects of Italy’s colonial past, which are bracketed off discourse, may contribute to the deployment of colonial discourse by these same parties when discussing immigration. From this Italian case study, broader implications can be drawn regarding the role of colonial memory in political discourse, which is a topical matter across Europe. The book will be of interest to those studying populism, the radical right, Italian politics and history, colonialism, and the politics of memory.
