The Defense of Vicksburg: A Louisiana Chronicle is the story of the Louisiana soldiers who fought at Vicksburg, as told through their letters, diaries, and remembrances. Most histories of this famous Civil War siege have been written by the victors; this one presents a day-by-day account from the Confederate vantage point. Indeed, these long-dead men come to life as we read their experiences and perceptions told in their own voices, which ring clear and without apology. In 1862 the Dixie Rebels of DeSoto Parish left for New Orleans. They and other Louisianians were formed into regiments and dispatched for Vicksburg. In the year that followed, the troops witnessed the shelling of Vicksburg by Union gunboats, the outbreak of disease, the lonely heroics of the Confederate ironclad Arkansas, the daily drudgery of camp life, and Jeff Davis’s visit to the beleaguered city. With immediacy and in intriguing detail several correspondents describe daily life in the trenches from their individual perspectives during each of the forty-seven days of the siege. Yet their stories do not end with the capitulation of the city, but continue in an epilogue as the troops return home and then continue their service for the balance of the war. Their experiences transcended their own worlds. These young men of Louisiana still have something important to tell us.

Cancer is a word that rightly strikes fear into the collective heart of humanity. It is a brutally indiscriminate killer and incurable (to date) disease. Able to infest any part of the body, from the brain to the bones to the lungs and liver, cancer seemingly mocks the inability to eliminate it. Treatment for cancer varies depending on the severity and type of neoplasm the patient has. The most well-known of these responses is chemotherapy, which involves the use of chemicals. In order to stem the spread of a patient's cancer, chemotherapy has the patient undergo a series of doses aimed at killing the cancerous cells. Unfortunately, the chemicals can also destroy healthy cells, particularly those that divide quickly. This action leads to side effects such as hair loss, fatigue, nausea, and anaemia. Even though the treatments may be of an overall benefit in eliminating or slowing cancer, the period of treatment is often an arduous one for the patient. Modern research has led to a virtual new era in chemotherapy with target drugs. This book brings together the latest research results in the fast moving field.

In a Bible study some years ago, our teacher asked each one in the Bible study to write a lesson on any topic we chose and take turns, each doing one study per week. I chose the Twenty-Third Psalm. My information comes from scripture, online information, and Bible studies. At the time, I didn't know how much information could come from studying that one psalm. So the day came when it was my turn to present the information to the class. When Psalm 23 was read, some people cried because they saw how we, like sheep, are loved. God sings songs over my head, your head. We have no idea how much the Good Shepherd loves us and will do anything to keep us close to him even if it means discipline that hurts. But He disciplines those He loves. For instance, He takes his staff and uses its crook to pull back a sheep from a steep cliff. It hurts the sheep at the time but not so much as incurring cuts and bruises from falling down a steep hill. We, like sheep, go astray, thinking we are in control of our lives, but we are not. Once the Good Shepherd gets our attention, He takes care of us.
