On June 25, 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court heard the case "Adoptive Couple vs. Baby Girl," which pitted adoptive parents Matt and Melanie Capobianco against baby VeronicaOCOs biological father, Dusten Brown, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. VeronicaOCOs biological mother had relinquished her for adoption to the Capobiancos without BrownOCOs consent. Although Brown regained custody of his daughter using the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) of 1978, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Capobiancos, rejecting the purpose of the ICWA and ignoring the long history of removing Indigenous children from their families. aIn "A Generation Removed," a powerful blend of history and family stories, award-winning historian Margaret D. This is not a usual kind of book about banking or bankers. The authors were interested in the lives of women who joined in partnership banking. These women began working in what had been a male preserve before ideas of feminism and women's rights had suggested this as a possibility. They were feminists before feminism existed! Responsibility as partners in banks did not absolve them from their duties as wives and mothers. So we hear about domestic matters - childbirth, sickness, dinner services, furniture, watercolour painting and riding accidents. There is also a background of links with commerce and business which made the British economy so vibrant and dynamic at this formative time. The banking industry grew and developed in response to the needs of enterprise in shipping, textile manufacture, mining, engineering and general commerce. In short, these bankers created the art of multi-tasking. The banks and bankers described here came from different backgrounds within the parameters of comfortable middle-class families, rooted in local communities and enterprises. This book is full of banking history and characters and mercifully light on references to subprime lending, liquidity ratios, securitisation, or even bonuses. This is an excellent time for it.
“Postcolonial theory” has become one of the key issues of scholarly debates worldwide; debates, so the author argues, which have become rather sterile and are characterized by a repetitive reworking of old hackneyed issues, focussing on cultural questions of language and identity in particular. Gradually, a gulf has emerged between Anglophone and Francophone thinking in this area. The author investigates the causes for the apparent stagnation that has overtaken much of the current debate and explores the particular characteristics of French global strategy and cultural policy, as well as the divergent responses to current debates on globalization. Outlining in particular the contribution of thinkers such as Césaire, Senghor, Memmi, Sartre and Fanon to the worldwide development of anti-imperialist ideas, she offers a critical perspective on the ongoing difficulties of France’s relationship with its colonial and postcolonial Others and suggests new lines of thought that are currently emerging in the Francophone world, which may have the capacity to take these debates.
There is an abundance of research saying that not only is leadership in higher education ineffective but also that it actually undermines the essential work that should be happening in universities. Christopher M. Branson, Maureen Marra, Margaret Franken and Dawn Penney provide a new insight into leadership that has proven to be far more effective for all involved – the transrelational approach to leadership. This new way of leading places an emphasis on the importance of the relationships that the leader develops with each and every person they are leading. However, in order to apply this new way of leading, higher education institutions must change some of the key ways they work. This book provides direction in how this can happen, what benefits would result, and offers a view on what the future for higher education might be if such changes to leadership are not made. Leadership in Higher Education from a Transrelational Perspective both critiques the likely implications of adopting this transrelational form of leadership into a higher educational institution and discusses the implications of not doing so. Although a transrelational approach to leadership might seem daunting for higher education institutions to adopt, is there any other choice? In his day, theater actor and manager Jack Langrishe (1825-1895) was about as well known in the West as General Grant was in the East. Langrishe provided entertainment to prospectors, miners and their families in Colorado, Montana, South Dakota and Idaho. He followed the expanding frontier from the old Northwest Territory to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and enjoyed his share of luck--he was out of town during the 1871 Chicago Fire, and was traveling through Indian territory at the same time Custer's command was being wiped out a day's ride away. Best known as a gifted comic actor and producer of fine dramas, Langrishe also edited newspapers, was an Idaho state senator and served as a justice of the peace. Here for the first time is the complete story of the father of theater in the West.
This is the untold story of Dr. J. D. Harris (1833-1884), an African American physician whose life and career straddled enormous changes for Black professionals and the practice of medicine. Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Harris served as a contract surgeon to the Union army and transitioned to a similar post under the Freedmen's Bureau, treating Black troops and freedpeople in Virginia. Margaret Humphreys not only narrates what we know about Harris but offers context to his remarkable journey, including how incredible it was that a young man born into freedom in a slave state learned to read when literacy for Black people was illegal. He was one of very few African Americans to become a doctor before Howard Medical School opened in the 1870s, a fact that both reveals the structural barriers to medical education for Black Americans and highlights how those structures weakened in the 1860s. Drawing on census records, court records, Civil War and Reconstruction documents from the National Archives, African American newspapers, and more, this book is a revealing look at the history not only of medicine in the southern United States but also of race and citizenship during one of the nation's most tumultuous eras.
This book introduces readers to a more comprehensive and empirically based approach to psychopathology than any other approach in use by psychological professionals today. It incorporates all areas of psychological research, experimental and observation as well as clinical and medical. This approach presents a method that does not entirely replace methods like those in the DSM-5 but improves them. Comparative psychology, the study of behavior across all species, has a solid place in this approach because it is where behaviors and psychological processes are studied in the most objective and empirically-sound manner. Areas covered throughout this text include not only the history of comparative psychopathology and comparative psychopathology as an approach to understanding psychological disorders, including anxiety and depressive disorders, better but also how comparative psychopathology can help advance psychology’s understanding of terrible social ills, including poverty and violence. A fresh examination of how society and economy changed at the end of the middle ages, comparing urban and rural experience. The traditional boundary between the medieval and early modern periods is challenged in this new study of social and economic change that bridges the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It addresses the large historical questions -what changed, when and why - through a detailed case study of western Berkshire and Newbury, integrating the experiences of both town and countryside. Newbury is of particular interest being a rising cloth manufacturing centre that had contacts with London and overseas due to its specialist production of kerseys. The evidence comes from original documentary research and the data are clearly presented in tables and graphs. It is a book alive with theactions of people, famous men such as the clothier John Winchcombe known as 'Jack of Newbury', but more notably by the hundreds of individuals, such as William Eyston or Isabella Bullford, who acquired property, cultivated their lands, or, in the case of Isabella, managed the mill complex after her husband's death. The turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s spawned a spectrum of activist movements. In spirit and action, events ranged from: gentle to violent; from Tree People to Bloody Sunday; from Community Mental Health to Black Power. This rapid stream of social and political change defined the second half of the 20th century, yet had roots in the first half. The baby boom generation launched many movements. Unlike their Depression/WWII parents, the boomers, a large cohort of unattached, young adults, had no looming familial and social responsibilities. They had the freedom and resources for the consuming task of changing the world.

René's court rivalled Burgundy in its rich artistic culture and his claim to the kingdom of Naples started a process that led to enormous changes in the power structure of Southern Europe.
The late 1970s and 1980s saw a process of mass factory closures in cities and regions across the Midwest of the United States. What happened next as leaders reacted to the news of each plant closure and to the broader deindustrialization trend that emerged during this time period is the main subject of this book. It shows how leaders in eight metropolitan areas facing deindustrialization strived for adaptive resilience by using economic development policy. The unique attributes of each region - asset bases, modes of governance, civic capacity, leadership qualities, and external factors - influenced the responses employed and the outcomes achieved. Using adaptive resilience as a lens, Margaret Cowell provides a thorough understanding of how and why regions varied in their abilities to respond to deindustrialization.

In this interdisciplinary study of gender, cross-cultural encounters, and federal Indian policy, Margaret D. Jacobs explores the changing relationship between Anglo-American women and Pueblo Indians before and after the turn of the century. During the late nineteenth century, the Pueblos were often characterized by women reformers as barbaric and needing to be "uplifted" into civilization. By the 1920s, however, the Pueblos were widely admired by activist Anglo-American women, who challenged assimilation policies and worked hard to protect the Pueblos? "traditional" way of life. ø Deftly weaving together an analysis of changes in gender roles, attitudes toward sexuality, public conceptions of Native peoples, and federal Indian policy, Jacobs argues that the impetus for this transformation in perception rests less with a progressively tolerant view of Native peoples and more with fundamental shifts in the ways Anglo-American women saw their own sexuality and social responsibilities.
Christine de Pizan (ca. 1364-1429) wrote more than twenty books, including poetry, defenses of women, critiques of war, Utopian visions, and general political and social commentary. Badin arrived in the Kentucky frontier in 1793, intent on expanding Catholicism among the pioneers, he brought only his faith and courage, a capacity to work long hard hours, and an understanding of the need for meaningful interaction with his Protestant neighbors. He established the groundwork for the later arrivals of Edward D. Fenwick, the first bishop of Cincinnati, and Archbishop John B. Purcell. The interaction between these priests and the frontier Protestant community resulted in a dialogue of mutual necessity that allowed for the growth of the region, the nation, and the church.
