Published in 1998. John Shirley’s importance as a scribe of late fourteen-and early fifteenth-century vernacular poetry (in particular the works of Chauncer and Lydgate) has long been recognised. Not only did Shirley bring these works to the attention of a wider audience in his own time, but the survival of some if his manuscripts has perpetuated these texts for future generations of readers. Indeed, some of these poems are now only known through his manuscripts. In this meticulously researched survey, Margaret Connolly makes a thorough examination of all extent documents relating to Shirley’s life and carefully scrutinises the physical characteristics of his manuscripts. In so doing she dispels many of the false interpretations that have arisen from speculation about the nature of Shirley’s scribal activities. The book concludes that there is no evidence to suggest that Shirley acted as a bookseller, but plenty to indicate that he lent his books extensively. The Parish Church has not only played a significant part in the life of Leeds, it captures within it the history of the great events and people who together have shaped that city through the centuries. This well researched book provides an interesting study of the development of fever hospitals and fever nursing, mainly in nineteenth and twentieth century Britain. It provides new insights into the development of nursing roles and nurse education and looks at the lives of key figures at that time. The text examines how this once important branch of the nursing profession emerged in the nineteenth century, only to be discarded in the second half of the following century. Drawing on the work of Goffman and Foucault, the study shows how, aided by medical advances, fever nurses transformed their custodial duties into a therapeutic role and how training schemes were implemented to improve the recruitment and retention of nurses. As standards of living improved and patient’s chances of recovery increased, many fever hospitals became redundant and fever nurses were no longer required. The wisdom of creating fever hospitals and then disbanding them is questioned in the light of changing disease patterns, international travel and the threat posed by biological warfare.
