This is a complete critical edition of Cicero's Cato Maior de Senectute (On Old Age )with an introduction and commentary. The text is based on a fresh examination of the manuscript tradition while the introduction aims to place the work in the context of Cicero's writings on old age in the ancient world. The Roman and Ciceronian qualities of the work are emphasized, rather than the search for lost sources that occupied scholars in the past. Matters of text, language, and content are all considered equally in the commentary.
During his life, Cicero defended several former Roman governors. This volume unites two such defences, one on behalf of Fonteius and the other on behalf of Scaurus, and provides a general introduction on the Roman extortion court and, for each speech, an introduction, English translation, and the first detailed commentary in English.
Cicero's De finibus, written in 45 BC, consists of three separate dialogues, dealing respectively with the ethical systems of Epicureanism, Stoicism, and the `Old Academy' of Antiochus of Ascalon. This critical edition of the text, based on a fresh study and collation of the manuscripts, is the first to appear for many years and the first to reflect a clear understanding of the whole manuscript tradition. It will be the second in a series of editions of Cicero's philosophical works; the first volume, the De officiis, edited by Michael Winterbottom, appeared in 1994.
Marcus Porcius Cato (234 BC, Tusculum – 149 BC) was a Roman statesman, commonly referred to as Censorius (the Censor), Sapiens (the Wise), Priscus (the Ancient), or Major, Cato the Elder, or Cato the Censor, to distinguish him from his great-grandson, Cato the Younger. His manual on running a farm (De Agricultura or "On Farming")contained herein is his only work that survives completely. It is a miscellaneous collection of rules of husbandry and management, including notes on country life in the 2nd century BC.Marcus Terentius Varro (116 BC – 27 BC) was an ancient Roman scholar and writer. He is sometimes called Varro Reatinus to distinguish him from his younger contemporary Varro Atacinus. His only complete work extant, Rerum Rusticarum Libri Tres also contained in this edition, has been described as "the well digested system of an experienced and successful farmer who has seen and practised all that he records.
In 62 BC, the year after his suppression of Catiline, Cicero delivered Pro Sulla, a successful defence of P. Cornelius Sulla, the nephew of the dictator, on a charge of participation in the Catilinarian conspiracy. This edition, which contains a new text together with introduction, commentary and appendices, is the first full-scale scholarly treatment of the speech. The text takes account of Gulielmius' reports of the missing portion of the Erfurtensis manuscript, recovered by Dr Berry and published as a preliminary to this edition in 1989; a complete collation is provided of this and the other principal manuscripts. The introduction includes a reassessment of Sulla's guilt and Cicero's undertaking of the case, and also considers issues such as the prose rhythm of the speech and its publication. The commentary discusses history, text and syntax as well as rhetoric and style.
A commentary for students on the four speeches delivered by Cicero during the crisis of 63 BC, when, as consul, he faced a conspiracy to overthrow the Roman state launched by the frustrated consular candidate Lucius Sergius Catilina. They show him at the height of his oratorical powers and political influence.
Selected letters written by the Roman senator and orator M. Cornelius Fronto in translation and accompanied by in-depth commentary notes, offering a unique insight into the late second century A.D Roman world.
