This book discusses a range of interventions that can be implemented in schools to prevent radicalization and violent extremism. This work, taking the form of a culinary book, is at the same time the result of ethnobotanical and botanical research conducted by members of the BG PAS conservation botany team - Dr Marcin Kotowski, Alidovar Sodatsairov and the director of BG PAS, Prof. Arkadiusz Nowak, in cooperation with scientists from the Central Asian University in Khorog - Dr Murodbek Laldjebaev and Barfiya Palavonshanbieva. In this book, the authors aim to bring both Polish- and English-speaking readers a picture of the nature of Central Asia through the prism of local culinary culture and related folk beliefs. The publication was funded by the Activity of Dissemination of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Using the history of sport in the small towns and local communities of Poland, this book shines new light on the everyday reality of life under a communist regime in Eastern Europe in the 20th Century. The book shows how socio-cultural history – ‘history from below’ – that draws on rich sources including oral testimony, personal archives, and literary and visual material, can provide the missing piece in our understanding of a significant time and place in the contemporary history of Europe. Focusing on the period between 1945 and 1989, the book shows how sport was an important element of state politics and propaganda but looks closely at the local level – at the spaces and material culture of sport - to reveal the extent to which sport had penetrated the daily culture of rural and small-town life in Poland. The stories of football players, local clubs, small sports arenas, and cyclists who crossed geographical and culture boundaries, all add new depth to the history of contemporary Poland, and by examining the history of local sport organisations the book also reveals important differences between official state ideology, the provincial party apparatus, and the lives of ordinary people. This is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the history of sport, socio-cultural history, European history, the history of the 20th Century, or historical methods.
Judges and lawyers have to shape their moral competences in order to maintain their professional ethics at a high standard if they want to effectively meet the challenges that modern society will throw at them. This requirement is due to the growing expectation that they will be socially and morally responsible for the law. Thus, the need to place ethics at the heart of legal education, and to make ethical reflection pervasive in academic courses, becomes more obvious every day. Using the concept and examples of moral dilemmas is a way of facilitating this task. The main purpose of this book is to analyse the concept of moral dilemma in context of judicial and legal ethics, and to provide material for legal education. The structure of this book is designed with this double aim in mind. The theoretical part presents the concept of dilemmas on grounds of metaethics and the perspectives for its application in a professional legal context. The former encompasses situations of conflict of duties or obligations, in which the choice of one conduct necessarily prevents a different conduct, and therefore leads to an unacceptable outcome. Hence, the situation of dilemma always involves an issue of moral responsibility and the problem of “dirty hands”. How such situations are present in legal practice and how to deal with them is the main concern of this part. The considerations are divided into three levels of reflection – deontological, axiological, and moral responsibility. The practical part of the book contains an overview of 150 dilemmas that can be useful in legal ethics or other legal courses. The dilemmas are divided into chapters covering the following branches of law: criminal law, civil and commercial law, family and custody law, labour and social security law, and constitutional law. Every dilemma presents a description of the facts, a reconstruction of dilemma, its standard solution and some critical remarks from a meta-ethical perspective. The dilemmas cover situations regularly met in everyday practice, as well as examples of more exceptional challenges in connection with constitutional crises that have occurred in Poland in recent years.
