This book investigates the relationship between the ideas of nation and race among the nationalist intelligentsia of the Italian Risorgimento and argues that ideas of race played a considerable role in defining Italian national identity. The author argues that the racialization of the Italians dates back to the early Napoleonic age and that naturalistic racialism—or race-thinking based on the taxonomies of the natural history of man—emerged well before the traditionally presumed date of the late 1860s and the advent of positivist anthropology. The book draws upon a wide number of sources including the work of Vincenzo Cuoco, Giuseppe Micali, Adriano Balbi, Alessanro Manzoni, Giandomenico Romagnosi, Cesare Balbo, Vincenzo Gioberti, and Carlo Cattaneo. Themes explored include links to antiquity on the Italian peninsula, archaeology, and race-thinking.

Marcello Badalì, classe 1970, dopo essersi laureato in Geologia, lascia l'Italia per lavoro, andando ad ingrossare le fila dei cosiddetti cervelli in fuga, definizione questa da prendere con le pinze nel caso in questione (e non per la fuga). Tuttora residente in Spagna, negli ultimi quattordici anni ha vissuto tra Stati Uniti, Messico, Germania, Francia e Norvegia. Le semiserie tragedie del caso umano in questione, causate dai vari shock culturali, sono a volte associate alla battuta greve in dialetto romano in cui egli ricade sovente. Il tutto è condito dall'impotente consapevolezza delle condizioni miserrime a cui la berlusconizzazione ha portato il paese natale negli anni della lontananza dell'autore. Non mancano quindi nel libro brevi accenni agli incredibili personaggi che la politica berlusconiana ha portato alla ribalta negli ultimi vent'anni, visti con gli occhi di uno straniero (un amico tedesco un giorno gli confessò "La situazione in Italia è gravissima, ma non seria").
