This is a fun-read western, but it is not pulp fiction. It’s a classic human conflict in a western setting, with serious philosophical issues. Think of “The Ox-Bow Incident,” the classic novel by Walter Van Tilburg Clark, but as readable as a Louis L’Amour western. A young man finds himself an outsider among the rough hands of a western ranch in Idaho during the Great Depression. An impassable rift between the kid and the cowboys happens on a scorching hot day in August, when men’s tempers are boiling. The kid’s working partner that day is violently killed when he impulsively and violently confronts a vagrant believed to be trespassing across the ranch. Critical events during the seconds leading to the cowboy’s violent death are not clear. Unable to save his friend, the kid rides for help and a posse forms. The kid believes the cowboy’s provocation led to his own death. But the ranch hands in the posse are convinced the tramp caused the death, so they insist on hanging him. Serious issues beset the kid and the ranch during the three difficult days after the death. The personal conflicts will be man-making for the young cowboy. The question is whether the posse will reflect and deal with its conflicts in a civilized way.

As such, this book marks nothing less than a paradigm shift in our understanding of the Normandy campaign. Beginning with the Allied planning for Operation Overlord in 1943, historian Marc Milner tracks changing and expanding assessments of the Panzer threat, and the preparations of the men and units tasked with handling that threat. Featured in this was the 3rd Canadian Division, which, treated so dismissively by history, was actually the most powerful Allied formation to land on D-Day, with a full armored brigade and nearly 300 artillery and antitank guns under command. Milner describes how, over four days of intense and often brutal battle, the Canadians fought to a literal standstill the 1st SS Panzer Corps—which included the Wehrmacht’s 21st Panzer Division; its vaunted elite Panzer Lehr Division; and the rabidly zealous 12th SS Hitler Youth Panzer Division, whose murder of 157 Canadian POWs accounted for nearly a quarter of Canadian fatalities during the fighting. Mastrangelo proposes an original theory of Prudentius's allegorical poetry and establishes Prudentius as a successor to Vergil. Employing recent approaches to typology and biblical exegesis as well as the most current theories of allusion and intertextuality in Latin poetry, he interprets the meaning and influence of Prudentius's work and positions the poet as a vital author for the transmission of the classical tradition to the early modern period. This provocative study challenges the view that poetry in the fourth century played a subordinate role to patristic prose in forging Christian Roman identity. It seeks to restore poetry to its rightful place as a crucial source for interpreting the rich cultural and intellectual life of the era.

Alphonzo Bell, born in 1914, was raised to be a cowboy on ranches in California and Colorado. His personality formed on the back of a horse despite his mother's high society wishes and his father's position as the founder and owner of Bel Air. The Bel Air Kid is an exciting lifestory and a rare history filled with adventures from the era when Los Angeles had a small town and, in parts, rural feel. Al Bell also recounts the history of his pioneer forbearers who first came out west just after the Civil War and helped shaped that crucial stage of Los Angeles urban development. William Randolph Hearst figured in early on, when he had a vendetta against the Bells that extended even into personal tragedy. Will Rogers was a friend of the family. Movie stars flit here and there. John Wayne shared a house in Acapulco. After serving in WWII and the postwar business world, Bell was a U.S. Congressman for many years from West LA. He supported every civil rights bill though his party opposed them and walked with Martin Luther King during the March on Washington. Al Bell also initiated environmental issues like the "Save the Whales" bill, made San Onofre a public beach, and helped found the Santa Monica Mountains Con servancy. Portraits of a century's leaders, such as Eleanor Roosevelt and Richard Nixon, emerge from a close perspective. These stories and countless others are told in Al's own voice, which has the tell-tale accent of the West. All articles build on the idea that a just society should equalize the resources that determine the opportunities agents face in order to follow their goals. Resources are either external, like financial resources, or internal, like preferences or skills. The authors propose to define “equality of opportunity” as the combination of ethical principles of compensation and responsibility. The principle of compensation requires external resources to be used to compensate low-skilled agents (considering that inequalities due to skill differences are unjust). The principle of responsibility requires external resources to be allocated without regards to inequalities due to differences in preferences (considering that these inequalities are not unjust). The articles present different ways of combining the two principles in different economic contexts.The book offers many possible aspects of the analysis of equality of opportunity, ranging from axiomatic discussions in abstract compensation models, to the design of redistribution policies in concrete labor income taxation models.

Decoding Economic Crises attempts to answer the question of whether American leadership has emerged unscathed from the damage inflicted by the 1975, 1992, 2009 and 2020 recessions and their legacies of debt.Looking forward to the future, there is a particular focus on environmental change. The book interrogates whether devastating crises might ensue, reminiscent of the 'nutritional trap' theorised by Nobel Prize winner Angus Deaton. Finally, Decoding Economic Crises asks if there will be a return to times of extreme scarcity as seen prior to the mid-18th century.
