This book is a quick and easy-to-use reference guide for choosing plant material for landscape designs. This reference manual includes comprehensive lists with search criteria for each of the major plant groups, including trees, shrubs, groundcovers, perennials, vines, grasses, and ferns. These plant groups contain hundreds of specific species, varieties, and cultivars that are readily available in the marketplace from the major production nurseries. Landscape architects, designers, contractors, or anyone who designs with plants, can easily choose plants that will work on their site. The book is technical enough for the professional, yet simple enough to be used by the layperson. Both botanical and common names are used and an extensive amount of cultural and environmental information is presented. While many other books of this kind give only basic information such as sun/shade, height/width, there are so many as 30 specific categories for each plant group. The categories cover such important criteria as light and soil requirements, zone hardiness, height and width, pest and disease susceptibility, urban tolerance, and tolerance to salt and drought. The lists also include many criteria often overlooked such as growth rates, overall messiness, root systems, minimal fall clean up, maintenance levels, soil PH and landscape value/use, and many visual characteristics such as texture, foliage color and fall colors, bloom colors and seasons, shapes and forms, attractive bark and foliage and more. There is also a candid Pros & Cons section covering some realistic considerations for each of the plant species groups.
Deterministic network calculus is a theory based on the (min, plus) algebra. Its aim is to compute worst-case performance bounds in communication networks. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive view of this theory and its recent advances, from its theoretical foundations to its implementations. The book is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the (min, plus) framework and its algorithmic aspects. The second part defines the network calculus model and analyzes one server in isolation. Different service and scheduling policies are discussed, particularly when data is packetized. The third part is about network analyses. Pay burst only once and pay multiplexing only once phenomena are exhibited, and different analyses are proposed and compared. This includes the linear programming approaches that compute tight performance bounds. Finally, some partial results on the stability are detailed.
Divided into two parts, this text examines both the general principles that permeate medical law and issues which arise in relation to specific areas of medical treatment.
A timely and comprehensive treatment of random field theory with applications across diverse areas of study Level Sets and Extrema of Random Processes and Fields discusses how to understand the properties of the level sets of paths as well as how to compute the probability distribution of its extremal values, which are two general classes of problems that arise in the study of random processes and fields and in related applications. This book provides a unified and accessible approach to these two topics and their relationship to classical theory and Gaussian processes and fields, and the most modern research findings are also discussed. The authors begin with an introduction to the basic concepts of stochastic processes, including a modern review of Gaussian fields and their classical inequalities. Subsequent chapters are devoted to Rice formulas, regularity properties, and recent results on the tails of the distribution of the maximum. Finally, applications of random fields to various areas of mathematics are provided, specifically to systems of random equations and condition numbers of random matrices. Throughout the book, applications are illustrated from various areas of study such as statistics, genomics, and oceanography while other results are relevant to econometrics, engineering, and mathematical physics. The presented material is reinforced by end-of-chapter exercises that range in varying degrees of difficulty. Most fundamental topics are addressed in the book, and an extensive, up-to-date bibliography directs readers to existing literature for further study. Level Sets and Extrema of Random Processes and Fields is an excellent book for courses on probability theory, spatial statistics, Gaussian fields, and probabilistic methods in real computation at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also a valuable reference for professionals in mathematics and applied fields such as statistics, engineering, econometrics, mathematical physics, and biology.

Modern Actuarial Risk Theory contains what every actuary needs to know about non-life insurance mathematics. It starts with the standard material like utility theory, individual and collective model and basic ruin theory. Other topics are risk measures and premium principles, bonus-malus systems, ordering of risks and credibility theory. It also contains some chapters about Generalized Linear Models, applied to rating and IBNR problems. As to the level of the mathematics, the book would fit in a bachelors or masters program in quantitative economics or mathematical statistics. This second and much expanded edition emphasizes the implementation of these techniques through the use of R. This free but incredibly powerful software is rapidly developing into the de facto standard for statistical computation, not just in academic circles but also in practice. With R, one can do simulations, find maximum likelihood estimators, compute distributions by inverting transforms, and much more.
Donald Davidson's work is of seminal importance in the development of the analytic tradition following Quine. His views on the nature of language, mind, and action occupy a prominent position in the philosophical literature and are a starting point for much of contemporary analytic philosophy. Davidson's article Truth and Meaning helped shape the debate over the proper approach to the semantics of natural language, just as Actions, Reasons, and Causes redirected discussions in action theory. His essay Mental Events partially defines contemporary discussion in its field, presenting one of the live options in the philosophy of psychology. His views are, however, extremely complex, interconnecting with one another in a myriad of ways and reinforcing one another in a way that makes it very difficult for students to understand his thinking by reading one or two of his articles. In this introduction to Davidson's philosophy Marc Joseph pulls together and examines Davidson's writings, illuminating the challenge of his critique and showing how it departs from the analytic tradition in novel and exciting ways.
The lambda calculus was developed in the 1930s by Alonzo Church. The calculus turned out to be an interesting model of computation and became theprototype for untyped functional programming languages. Operational and denotational semantics for the calculus served as examples for otherprogramming languages. In typed lambda calculi, lambda terms are classified according to their applicative behavior. In the 1960s it was discovered that the types of typed lambda calculi are in fact appearances of logical propositions. Thus there are two possible views of typed lambda calculi: - as models of computation, where terms are viewed as programs in a typed programming language; - as logical theories, where the types are viewed as propositions and the terms as proofs. The practical spin-off from these studies are: - functional programming languages which are mathematically more succinct than imperative programs; - systems for automated proof checking based on lambda caluli. This volume is the proceedings of TLCA '93, the first international conference on Typed Lambda Calculi and Applications, organized by the Department of Philosophy of Utrecht University. It includes29 papers selected from 51 submissions.

For every physician that interprets ECGs, there is great need to understand a vast amount of information regarding the technique. That the basics of the technique have changed little over the last 100 years means that there is a huge amount of subtle detail that must be learnt to enable its effective use as a diagnostic test. The ECG technique is critical for deciding upon further diagnostic procedures and therapeutic interventions (notably coronary angiography, PTCA, stenting, coronary artery bypass grafting, pacemaker insertion, ablation, electroconversion etc). Without attaining the skills to practice the ECG procedure and knowledge of its diagnostic value - skills often overlooked during medical training - physicians will be unlikely to use it to the benefit of their patients.

Lucid and logical in structure, this new edition, previously entitled Sourcebook on Medical Law draws together a wide range of essential material, including extracts from statutes, cases and academic commentary from medical law; an area which is fast becoming an important part of undergraduate syllabuses.Fully updated to take account of recent developments in this dynamic area of law, it examines two major pieces of legislation: the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and the Human Tissue Act 2004 as well as a significant amount of new case law, including the House of Lords decisions in Chester v Afshar and Gregg v Scott and the Court of Appeal decision in R (on the application of Burke) v GMC and others.Divided into two parts, it covers:the general principles that permeate medical law, exploring illness and the ethics of care and healthcare in England and Wales and consent to treatment, confidentiality and medical malpracticeissues which arise in relation to specific areas of medical treatment, including infertility treatment and surrogacy, pregnancy and abortion, treating the incompetent, the mentally ill, medical research, organ transplants and euthanasia. This textbook is an invaluable reference tool for all those studying medical law as well as those studying medicine.
This cutting-edge book presents the theory and practice of the Graph Model for Conflict Resolution (GMCR), which is used for strategically investigating disputes in any field to enable informed decision making. It clearly explains how GMCR can determine what is the best a particular decision maker (DM) can independently achieve in dynamic interaction with others. Moves and counter-moves follow various stability definitions reflecting human behavior under conflict. The book defines a wide range of preference structures to represent a DM’s comparisons of states or scenarios: equally preferred, more or less preferred; unknown; degrees of strength of preference; and hybrid. It vividly describes how GMCR can ascertain whether a DM can fare even better by cooperating with others in a coalition. The book portrays how a conflict can evolve from the status quo to a desirable resolution, and provides a universal design for a decision support system to implement the innovative decision technologies using the matrix formulation of GMCR. Further, it illustrates the key ideas using real-world conflicts and supplies problems at the end of each chapter. As such, this highly instructive book benefits teachers, mentors, students and practitioners in any area where conflict arises.
This book combines foundational constructions in the theory of motives and results relating motivic cohomology to more explicit constructions. Prerequisite for understanding the work is a basic background in algebraic geometry. The author constructs and describes a triangulated category of mixed motives over an arbitrary base scheme. Most of the classical constructions of cohomology are described in the motivic setting, including Chern classes from higher $K$-theory, push-forward for proper maps, Riemann-Roch, duality, as well as an associated motivic homology, Borel-Moore homology and cohomology with compact supports.
