Marc Jungblut extends existing knowledge on the role of strategic communication in conflict news by examining four violent conflicts. He relies on an automated content analysis of texts by 52 strategic communicators, such as politicians, NGOs, social movements, as well as on the international news coverage in 17 media outlets. By analyzing over 80,000 texts in seven languages, the book demonstrates that media visibility is almost exclusively granted based on ethnocentrism and elite status. The journalistic framing of conflict events, however, is much more context-dependent and shows a higher degree of independence from elite voices and strategic communication in general.

The transportation problem can be formalized as the problem of finding the optimal way to transport a given measure into another with the same mass. In contrast to the Monge-Kantorovitch problem, recent approaches model the branched structure of such supply networks as minima of an energy functional whose essential feature is to favour wide roads. Such a branched structure is observable in ground transportation networks, in draining and irrigation systems, in electrical power supply systems and in natural counterparts such as blood vessels or the branches of trees. These lectures provide mathematical proof of several existence, structure and regularity properties empirically observed in transportation networks. The link with previous discrete physical models of irrigation and erosion models in geomorphology and with discrete telecommunication and transportation models is discussed. It will be mathematically proven that the majority fit in the simple model sketched in this volume.

Tijdens een studie over zijn geboortestreek en een aantal maatschappelijk sociale gebeurtenissen over de lage landen meent hij een oorzaak te vinden in de verdrukking die de reformatie en onbreekbaar er aan verbonden de contrareformatie en de vervolging van de kerk door middel van de inquisitie die lelijk thuishield in Le Nord en de Vlaamse landen. Na bezoek aan het geschonden graf van een grootoom ontmoet hij een vreemd personage die zijn overvloedige littekens toeschrijft aan de vele veldslagen die hij meemaakte. Deze vreemde man noemt zich Drogo De Valenciennes en ex kruisvaarder. Hij lijkt onsterfbaar omwille van wat ooit gebeurde waardoor hij zijn gevoelens niet meer kan lenigen. Hij zoekt in de persoon van de verteller een medestaander die emotioneel getormenteerd is om samen uit het leven te stappen.
