It a striking account of the long moments of boredom and discomfort, followed by episodes of intense drama. The letters and diaries continue to February 1919, when Valentin is demobilised. The correspondence with family and friends grows after the German capitulation as communication lines are re-established and people take stock of what has happened, seek out who has survived, gossip about who has collaborated with the Germans. Another important topic is the Dewaele family business, a prominent draper shop in Ostend, left in the hands of staff as the family fled to the UK before the Germans moved in.

The human lung is a complex and highly specialized organ with over 40 differentiated cell types. Optimal lung function is determined prenatally and an in utero adverse event may interfere with the delicate lung development process and lead to variable degrees of pulmonary hypoplasia. Fetal lung underdevelopment is a major concern for obstetricians and pediatricians since pulmonary hypoplasia (PH) may lead to severe respiratory distress immediately after birth and even to neonatal death or potential long-term morbidity. During a five year period, the author had the opportunity to conduct in experienced teams several studies on different fetal malformations that dealt with multiple aspects in the wide spectrum of PH: gastroschisis (GAS), giant omphalocele (GO), low obstructive uropathies (LUTO) and congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The thesis, which focuses on four papers published as first author, reviews important features of PH for a fetal medicine specialist. Three other publications as co-author are presented at the end of the manuscript as "additional contributions".

This book proposes a combination of cognitive modeling with model-based user interface development to tackle the problem of maintaining the usability of applications that target several device types at once (e.g., desktop PC, smart phone, smart TV). Model-based applications provide interesting meta-information about the elements of the user interface (UI) that are accessible through computational introspection. Cognitive user models can capitalize on this meta-information to provide improved predictions of the interaction behavior of future human users of applications under development. In order to achieve this, cognitive processes that link UI properties to usability aspects like effectiveness (user error) and efficiency (task completion time) are established empirically, are explained through cognitive modeling, and are validated in the course of this treatise. In the case of user error, the book develops an extended model of sequential action control based on the Memory for Goals theory and it is confirmed in different behavioral domains and experimental paradigms. This new model of user cognition and behavior is implemented using the MeMo workbench and integrated with the model-based application framework MASP in order to provide automated usability predictions from early software development stages on. Finally, the validity of the resulting integrated system is confirmed by empirical data from a new application, eliciting unexpected behavioral patterns.

Na bezoek aan het geschonden graf van een grootoom ontmoet hij een vreemd personage die zijn overvloedige littekens toeschrijft aan de vele veldslagen die hij meemaakte. Deze vreemde man noemt zich Drogo De Valenciennes en ex kruisvaarder. Hij lijkt onsterfbaar omwille van wat ooit gebeurde waardoor hij zijn gevoelens niet meer kan lenigen. Hij zoekt in de persoon van de verteller een medestaander die emotioneel getormenteerd is om samen uit het leven te stappen.

The patent system is criticized today by some practitioners and economists. In fact, there is a partial disconnection between patent demographics and productivity gains, but also the development of actors who do not innovate and who develop business models that their detractors equate with a capture of annuities or a dangerous commodification of patents. This book provides a less Manichaean view of the position of patents in the system of contemporary innovation. It first recalls that these criticisms are not new, before arguing that if these criticisms have been revived, it is because of a partial shift from an integrated innovation system to a much more fragmented and open system. This shift accompanied the promotion of a more competitive economy. The authors show that this movement is coherent with a more intensive use of patents, but also one that is more focused on their signal function than on their function of direct monetary incentive to innovation.
