Based on reports from the daily press the book presents a protest event analysis of right wing groups’ mobilisation and action strategies, relating them to their online practices. In Unexpected Revolutionaries, Manuela Moschella investigates the institutional transformation of central banks from the 1970s to the present. Central banks are typically regarded as conservative, politically neutral institutions that uphold conventional macroeconomic wisdom. Yet in the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis and the 2020 COVID-19 crisis, central banks have upended observer expectations by implementing largely unknown and unconventional monetary policies. Far from abiding by well-established policy playbooks, central banks now engage in practices such as providing liquidity support for a wide range of financial institutions and quantitative easing. They have even stretched the remit of monetary policy into issues such as inequality and climate change. Moschella argues that the political nature of central banks lies at the heart of these transformations. While formally independent, central banks need political support to justify their policies and powers, and to obtain it, they carefully manage their reputation among their audienceselected officials, market actors, and citizens. Challenged by reputational threats brought about by twenty-first-century recessionary and deflationary forces, central banks such as the Federal Reserve System and the European Central Bank strategically deviated from orthodox monetary policies to preempt or manage political backlash and to regain public trust. Central banks thus evolved into a new role only in coordination with fiscal authorities and on the back of public contestation. Eye-opening and insightful, Unexpected Revolutionaries is necessary reading for discussions on the future of the neoliberal macroeconomic regime, the democratic oversight of monetary policymaking, and the role that central banks canor cannotplay in our domestic economies.

This book includes surveys of activists at international protest events targeting the European Union (for a total of about 5000 interviews); a discourse analysis of documents and transcripts of debates on European politics and policies conducted during the four European social forums held between 2002 and 2006 and involving hundreds of social movement organizations and tens of thousands of activists from all European countries; about 320 interviews with representatives of civil society organizations in six EU countries (France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain, and Italy) and one non-member state (Switzerland), and a systematic claims analysis of the daily press in selected years between 1990 and 2003. The empirical research shows the different paths of Europeanization taken by social movements and civil society organizations.

This is the first major study in English of Fascist Italy’s overseas propaganda. Using rare Italian and French captured documents, this is also the first investigation into the relationship between Mussolini’s regime and Arab nationalist movements This new account covers propaganda and subversive activities engineered by the Italian government in the Mediterranean and the Middle East from 1935 until 1940, when Italy entered the war. It assesses the nature of the challenge brought by the Fascist regime to British security and colonial interests in the region. Fascist propaganda, in particular in the Arab Middle East, must be regarded as an expression of Mussolini’s foreign policy and his attempts to build an Italian empire that would stretch beyond the Mediterranean, gaining control over the exits, Gibraltar and Suez, which were in the hands of the British and the French. The activities of individual agents and organizations are carefully reconstructed and analyzed to highlight the seemingly contradictory objectives of the Italian government: on the one hand, Rome was courting the Arab nationalist movements in Egypt and Palestine, which were seeking the support of external forces capable of providing political, financial and military backing needed to overthrow foreign rulers; on the other, the regime was promoting further territorial expansion in Africa. These aspects build into an excellent picture of this fascinating period of modern history. This book will be of great interest to all students and scholars of politics, media, Italian history and propaganda.

It consists of two parts, (1) an analysis of the implications of changes in European Corporate Law, and (2) an assessment of their impact on post merger integration. Part 1 is about the European Court of Justice's jurisdiction and its implications on German Corporate Law: It explores how European Law is influencing and thereby changing national law. Having analysed the effect of its rulings on - until recently in continental Europe prevailing - seat theory, I carefully analyse the subsequent developments and trends, including reform of the German Limited Liability Company Act (MoMiG), competition of legal forms, opportunities offered by recently introduced supranational legal forms with particular focus on the Societas Europaea, and EU merger directive with its influence on the German Transformation Act. Part 2 not only critically evaluates prevailing merger integration theories, it also reflects on the opportunities the afore-mentioned changes in European Corporate Law offer to successful post merger integration. Hence, I analyse and further develop Jansen's 7c model and educe a strategic plan.

This study focuses on minimizing cost and uncertainties using MPC in electric- thermal systems. In addition a hierarchical control approach is proposed and evaluated through simulation in a new software framework called OptFlex and a laboratory experiment. The control system combines electricity and heat components for flexible and efficient energy production and consumption. It enables cost-effective and CO2 minimal utilization and a simple solution of accounting for the differences between forecasted and measured values of the energy components. The MPC is validated in a laboratory test for a PV-CHP system. Results show reliable control with a deviation of approximately 12%. The study also investigates a variable combined control variant to save computation time but incurs higher operating costs. The developed hierarchical control system effectively flexibilities, addresses uncertainties and can be applied to different energy systems including heat pumps.

Moving from a social movement perspective, this timely volume examines narratives on Euroscepticism and frames on Europe from below, at the party and social movement levels. Revealing perspectives from both the Right and the Left, it unpacks the emergence, re-emergence and increase in critical ‘voices’ and opposition towards Europe.
