All these characters are revealing human pain , and universal oppression , reminding us of our humanity , in spite of different languages , nationalities and secret desires .This novel records also the circumstances which led to the Egyptian revolution on 25th January 2011 , it predicted its occurrence, and also predicted the disaccord between different Egyptian parties which followed . The novel was published in Arabic in 2008 at the supreme council of culture in Egypt. The author decided to rewrite it in English to be read by English speaking people.
The novel is speaking about the archeologist Fhd, who spent his childhood at the oasis and was taught archeology by Aschraf Azaam. He met Habeba, an American lady with Egyptian roots, who possessed a map left to her by her grandfather. He discovered symbols which denoted that AbdelRahman, the grandpa of Habeba, wrote messages for his offspring on the walls of the oasis caves. But that wasnt all. What Fhd didnt state to Habeba is that the map denoted also the presence of a secret city near the oasis. Through the sequence of events, he was able to reach that city, where he met people coming from different cultures, who narrated for him their tales, revealing the unity between mankind, yet Fhd started to search for an exit as he felt that the city was beyond him. Everyone was narrating his story, but he couldnt do the same. He wanted to keep his pains and secrets within his heart, so would he find an exit? The answer is inside.
This is a historical novel, speaking about a critical period in the sixteenth century, connecting Granada to Egypt. Dorra, a carpet weaver, her grandson Maa-alzahab, and her sister Sahar are the main characters that represent Granada. Ibrahem, the son of the head of merchants of Cairo, is the main character that represents Egypt. Through the sequence of events, Ibrahem travels to Granada and meets Dorra, her grandson, and her sister, and there they exchange their tales, joys, fears, hopes. As you turn the pages, you will be oriented of the struggle between exclusion, seclusion due to ideological differences from one side and open minds from the other side, represented by the great Arabian philosophers, Sufis who were stated in the novel as Averroes, Ibn-Arabi and Ibn-Tofail. It is a story about human beings who loved life, were eager for every drop of it, yet were oppressed. That period was critical. The author sets a question: "Who would have the upper hand life or oppression?" The answer isnt easy.
