As the demon Marbas and his companion Wisteria continue on their journey, they meet Diana Blackbell, a highborn girl who has more in common with Wisteria than their youth. But what has Diana sacrificed in her pride? The Blackbell family saga begins!
Battle follows battle, revealing old memories. What kind of future do Marbas and Wisteria find after meeting new friends and leaving old ones behind? "Meeting you helped me learn about the world." "Meeting you changed my world." The tale of a demon and a human girl that began in a small corner of London reaches its epic conclusion!
This is the story of Wisteria, an orphaned girl lost in darkness, and Marbas, an immortal being who shares her loneliness. The unlikely companions met on a quiet, uneventful night, and they set off together in search of the light. What begins as a chance meeting on the edge of the late nineteenth-century British Empire soon became a full-fledged journey to find their place in the world.
Marbas, a powerful demon, and Wisteria, a young human girl, are on a journey to find their place in the world. They part with Wisteria's brother, the demon hunter, and encounter a young lady bound to another of Marbas' kind. This is the tale of the eternal nights in which such meetings and partings ease the loneliness of this uncanny pair.
An ancient demon is confused by the new world he finds after waking up from several hundred years of sleep. Another, more bloodthirsty demon joins hands with an equally bloodthirsty human to watch the chaos unfold. The Sword Cross Knights draw their blades to protect the British Empire from demons. And Wisteria sets off to rescue her brother from captivity. All will meet in the twilight crossroads of London.
Two immortal great demons have each chosen a human companion to pass the endless years. Marbas' choice was a lonely girl, while Dantalion's was a bloodthirsty maniac. Their pacts with these humans began as mere diversions, but developed into unique relationships over time. When their chosen paths bring them into direct conflict, each demon's pride is on the line.
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a transformative and powerful approach to language education and has had a significant impact on educational pedagogy in recent years. Despite burgeoning literature on the efficacy and implementation of CLIL, there remains a gap between CLIL and English Language Teaching (ELT). Many practitioners wonder how they can ‘do CLIL’ if their main classes are focused on English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This volume addresses these concerns by examining the experiences of various CLIL practitioners in the EFL context of Japan. Chapters outline the CLIL methodology, the differences in ‘hard CLIL’ (subject led) and ‘soft CLIL’ (language-oriented) before focusing on the EFL interpretations of soft-CLIL. Although the distinction of hard CLIL and soft CLIL has been mentioned in several publications, this is the first book-length exploration of this issue, featuring chapters examining expectations, challenges, material support, implementation, and even motivation in CLIL classrooms. All of this culminates in a review of the potential and future of CLIL in EFL contexts, paving the way for more widespread and well informed implementation of CLIL all over the world.
Mankind has established a base on the Moon and manned missions to Mars, and now prepares to travel further into space than ever before. Fulfilling his lifelong dream of space exploration, young Hachimaki makes the cut for the Von Braun Jupiter mission, forcing him to confront his own limitations beyond the farthest frontier. Back home, his compatriots Fee, Yuri, and Tanabe stare down the United States military, refusing to abandon their mission clearing space debris in the face of a war that threatens to set off the Kessler syndrome, trapping Earth forever behind a wall of deadly space debris! Often cited as a gateway title into the world of manga, Planetes is a modern classic, and Dark Horse Manga is proud to present the series' concluding omnibus volume, produced from the original files and including all the color pages and bonus stories! "My favorite sci-fi comics series of all time."-Writer Alex de Campi (Smoke/Ashes, Archie vs. Predator)
It's the 2070s, and mankind has conquered space, making interplanetary travel possible and igniting the imaginations of the world. It's also vastly increased the amount of dangerous space debris, and someone has to clean it up. Hachimaki, Yuri, and Fee are a crew on that beat, each with their own goals, tendencies, and personal problems: Hachimaki dreams of deep-space exploration in his own ship, Yuri is still recovering from the death of his wife in an accident caused by orbiting debris, and Fee is secretive, but there's a lot going on under the surface! Just trying to do their jobs in an age of space-age environmental concerns and new vistas of exploration, the crew deals with Hachi's fear of isolation hampering his hopes of joining an upcoming Jupiter mission, keep an eye on the wreckage for signs of Yuri's lost wife, and become unwitting heroes when the only place Fee can still smoke is threatened by terrorists! Dark Horse Manga is proud to present Makoto Yukimura's award-winning hard sci-fi epic Planetes in two omnibus-sized editions, complete with bonus color pages never before seen in America! "Planetes has it all: strong themes, interesting characters, and great art." -Anime Fringe
This book has a dual purpose. The first is to present in a new English translation 255 representative hokku (or haiku) poems of Matsuo Basho (1644-94), the Japanese poet who is generally considered the most influential figure in the history of the genre. The second is to make available in English a wide spectrum of Japanese critical commentary on the poems over the last three hundred years.
Air pollution, especially ozone, in East and Southeast Asia is considered to be more serious than in Europe and North America. An increase in ozone concentration may lead to adverse effects on forest trees in East and Southeast Asia where we have high species richness. Although some information on the effects of ozone on plantation tree species in East Asia is available, the situation of most countries in Southeast Asia is not clarified. In Japan, advanced methodologies such as the stomatal flux-based approach, use of a free-air ozone fumigation system and stand level studies have started recently. To maintain ecosystem services of forests such as carbon sink and conservation of biodiversity, there is a need to develop our understanding of the effect of ozone on vegetation in East and Southeast Asia. To this end, international cooperative research is important.
From authors renowned in the fields of engineering and biology, this is the first book to integrate sensor and actuator technology with bioinspired design. Beginning with detailed descriptions of actuation and sensing mechanisms in plants and animals, the authors move on to apply these principles to synthetic design, offering in-depth knowledge of the development of state-of-the-art smart materials and devices. All of this is supported with a range of real-world applications, from tactile sensory systems in insects linked with the development of robotic hands, to the structural colour systems in nature used to inspire camouflage technology. Further examples are given of successful designs along with their integrated autonomous systems, such as flying and swimming, unmanned systems, and autonomous zero-energy building design. With a wide interdisciplinary appeal, this is an ideal resource for any student, practising engineer, or researcher interested in the connection between natural systems and synthetic design.
Plant diseases are a serious threat to food production. This unique volume provides the fundamental knowledge and practical use of B.subtilis as a promising biocontrol agent. In order to replace chemical pesticides, one possibility is microbial pesticides using safe microbes. Bacillus subtilis is one of several candidates. Screening of the bacterium, the application of plant tests, clarification of its suppressive mechanism to plant pathogens and engineering aspects of suppressive peptides production are presented here. The author illustrates how B. subtilis is far more advantageous than, for example, Pseudomonas in biocontrol and can be considered as an useful candidate. Features: Bacterium B. subtilis suppresses many plant pathogens and is a biocontrol agent to replace chemical pesticides The book presents the bacterium's suppressive mechanism to plant pathogens, and engineering aspects of suppressive peptides production Biological control of plant disease plays an important role in sustainable agricultural production practices and is expected to replace agricultural chemicals
