Maitland, known by members of the Seminole tribe as Fumecheliga (the muskmelon place), has a history as diverse and beautiful as its tranquil lake-studded Florida landscape. Named for a soldier who never saw it, the city got its start as an army fort in the Second Seminole War. Later its temperate climate and rich soil drew settlers who put their dreams, sweat, and savings into the soil, growing vegetable crops, raising cattle, and planting extensive citrus groves. Others soon followed, including a number of wealthy winter residents who sought refuge from northern winters and better health in the warmer climate. Together they built a city that served as a center of commerce, learning, and art for the area. Today much of the citrus industry is gone, replaced with subdivisions, thriving office centers, and a cultural corridor, but Maitland remains a place where people move to make better lives. The muskmelons may be gone, but the cypress tree-lined lakes and historic homes serve as reminders of the city's rich history upon which its current success was built.

The second volume treats the doctrines of the common law, including tenure, the law of personal condition, status and estate, and the jurisdiction and communities of the land. Gracefully written and enriched with countless references this is an essential book. First published in 1895, it remains a primary text for students of legal history and the social history of medieval England.
This genealogical work traces the descendants of Philip Mahoney to the author and the descendants of William Hodgkins that link to the Mahoney line. Initially this was the ancestry of Clyde Edward Mahoney and Alice Mabel (Hodgkins) Mahoney. This Mahoney line entered Maine from Quebec Province Canada. The Hodgkins line is descendant from the William Hodgkins of the Plymouth Plantation colony. A number of other genealogical connections are outlined as they contribute or descend from Clyde and Alice.

Most feminists have turned away from the Christian churches, regarding both Catholicism and the protestant denominations as bastions of sexism and patriarchal oppression. However, Christian feminists committed to improving the position of Christian women and to the spiritual renewal of their respective churches are drawing inspiration for their struggles from the contemporary Women’s Movement. In this study Sara Maitland looks at what has been happening to Christian women in general, and Christian feminists in particular, over the last fifteen to twenty years. She sets their experiences in the framework of the history of the churches and reviews it in the light of events such as the Second Vatican Council, the ordination of Baptist and Episcopal women ministers in America and Britain, and the debate about the ordination of women in the Anglican communion. She argues that the insights gained by Christian feminists put them in a unique position to prophesy to their respective churches, leading them back to the Gospel imperatives of love, justice and freedom, and that an understanding and acceptance of this role of women is crucial to the well-being of the whole Church. As well as studying the history, theology and institutional structures of the denominational churches, the book uses a wealth of interview material from both sides of the Atlantic to describe the experiences of women from many different backgrounds, including nuns, women priests and lay workers. Sara Maitland concludes that Christianity can and must pass beyond the long centuries of oppression and division into ‘a new country’, a country in which women and men are equally ‘made in the image of God’.
