The series Religion and Society (RS) contributes to the exploration of religions as social systems – both in Western and non-Western societies; in particular, it examines religions in their differentiation from, and intersection with, other cultural systems, such as art, economy, law and politics. Due attention is given to paradigmatic case or comparative studies that exhibit a clear theoretical orientation with the empirical and historical data of religion and such aspects of religion as ritual, the religious imagination, constructions of tradition, iconography, or media. In addition, the formation of religious communities, their construction of identity, and their relation to society and the wider public are key issues of this series.
Radical Doubt investigates ethical play across a spectrum of performances, on and off the stage. In witty, recursive, personal, and propulsive prose, Mady Schutzman elaborates on the Joker System, conceived by Augusto Boal, best known for Theatre of the Oppressed. The Joker System is a collaborative approach to representing social dilemmas through a rare fusion of destabilizing ambiguity and journalistic rigor. Schutzman models the Joker System while expanding well beyond the theatrical. In polyphonic compositions that perform their own philosophy, she uncovers illuminating links between calculus and conjuring, kōans and resistance, humor and witnessing, complexity theory and sorely needed new practices of living in our divisive times. These life practices rely upon crafty and circuitous strategies to deliver their subversive punch. Jok(er)ing matters, Schutzman insists. When communities fragment and identities fixate, enter the trickster! Sonja Kuftinec Theatre Arts and Dance, University of Minnesota

BOO!! is a collection of true ghost stories by Najla Mady, Canada’s very own ghostbuster. From voodoo rituals, infant possession, to the antics of gentle, benign spirits, including the famous love affair of Captain Swayze from the War of 1812, who entertained many a guest at the Angel Inn at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Najla recites here a few of her more entertaining ghostly encounters. Najla Mady has been much courted by the media. On her own weekly TV show, A Psychic Hour with Najla, she predicted the assassination of Anwar Sadat. When she is not doing personal counselling, she exorcizes ghosts from homes and other places. EXORCIZES GHOSTS??! Is that the activity of a sane, rational personality, you might ask? Anyone who has had the delight of working with Najla will describe a most down-to-earth person. No dippy, chanting, star-gazing fanatic, this woman. BOO!! represents a departure for most of the literature available in this genre because it is not sensationalist. Najla’s single purpose is to help demystify the world of parapsychology for us ordinary folk who live only (and perhaps regrettably) in the obvious, physical realm.

David and Mady Segal analyze the adaptation of American soldiers assigned to the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) in the Sinai Desert in support of the Camp David Accords, in the context of the evolution of multinational peacekeeping forces as mechanisms for achieving international security. The reactions of soldiers and their wives to the peacekeeping assignment are considered from the perspective of the social construction of reality, in which the role of the military has been defined as war-fighting. The press has ignored peacekeeping until very recently, and it falls to military organizations, to soldiers and their families, to make sense of the mission. Lessons learned from the Sinai MFO experience should be used to help U.S. troops better prepare for their increasing role in multinational peacekeeping.

Enjoying Wild Herbs: A Seasonal Guide brings Hackney Herbal's Nat Mady and illustrator Catmouse together to introduce the wonderful world of herbs. Asking important questions about the nature of public and private space, of how we live alongside plants, how we use them, how we gather them, this is a treatise on how foraging and the knowledge that underpins it can be a radical act—an act that informs much of our attitude to the natural world, to the food we eat and to how we value the multitudinous life that surrounds us.
