Miracle after miracle, Alfred Boeddeker saw the equivalent of five loaves and two fishes multiplied many times over through the ministry of the St. Anthony Dining Room in downtown San Francisco. This is the story of a man who brought dignity, meaning, and hope to those hurting people. He faithfully followed his calling in a ministry of over fifty years. This is a story of lives turned around, of rebuilding and the successes of those who returned to family and home, of men and women contributing anew to community and society. Hartmann fills page after page with stories of ministry and miracle detailing the life of Alfred Boeddeker. This story should be read by Catholics, Protestants, and non-sectarians alike. It's a book that should be in school and public libraries. It should be required reading for the politician, the philanthropist, and the pauper. In the last two decades, research on spatial paradigms and practices has gained momentum across disciplines and vastly different periods, including the field of medieval studies. Responding to this ’spatial turn’ in the humanities, the essays collected here generate new ideas about how medieval space was defined, constructed, and practiced in Europe, particularly in France. Essays are grouped thematically and in three parts, from specific sites, through the broader shaping of territory by means of socially constructed networks, to the larger geographical realm. The resulting collection builds on existing scholarship but brings new insight, situating medieval constructions of space in relation to contemporary conceptions of the subject.
Paris was the epicenter of art during the latter half of the nineteenth century, luring artists from around the world with its academies, museums, salons, and galleries. Despite the city's cosmopolitanism and its cultural stature, Parisian society remained strikingly conservative, particularly with respect to gender. Nonetheless, many women painters chose to work and study in Paris at this time, overcoming immense obstacles to access the city's resources. 'Women Artists in Paris, 1850-1900' showcases the remarkable artistic production of women during this period of great cultural change, revealing the breadth and strength of their creative achievements. Guest Curator Laurence Madeline (Chief Curator at Musées d'art et d'histoire, Geneva) has selected close to seventy compelling paintings by women of varied nationalities, ranging from well-known artists such as Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, and Rosa Bonheur, to lesser-known figures such as Kitty Kielland, Louise Breslau, and Anna Ancher.

Throughout history there have been women's movers and shakers in most societies. And many are forgotten. This is a biographical collection of over 200 such women from ancient times to modern. For some women there was almost no information surviving. Just their names, dates, and positions. The women I selected did amazing things in many fields, art, music, literature, science. It is interesting to note how many were activitists and rebels. Maybe not surprising. My only criteria was that a woman did something and is unknown or almost so.
