This book discusses mixture and hidden Markov models for modeling behavioral data. Mixture and hidden Markov models are statistical models which are useful when an observed system occupies a number of distinct “regimes” or unobserved (hidden) states. These models are widely used in a variety of fields, including artificial intelligence, biology, finance, and psychology. Hidden Markov models can be viewed as an extension of mixture models, to model transitions between states over time. Covering both mixture and hidden Markov models in a single book allows main concepts and issues to be introduced in the relatively simpler context of mixture models. After a thorough treatment of the theory and practice of mixture modeling, the conceptual leap towards hidden Markov models is relatively straightforward. This book provides many practical examples illustrating the wide variety of uses of the models. This paper surveys the literature on the relationship between international trade and inclusive growth. It examines claims that the rise in inequality in many countries can be attributed to the concurrent rise in trade competition, especially from EMEs like China, spurring trade tensions and protectionist measures. The paper investigates the conflicting literature showing the aggregate benefits of trade versus the adverse and persistent impact of trade, especially import competition, on specific industries and local communities. The paper then reviews the evidence for using trade policies and other complementary policies for adjustment and compensation to those groups adversely affected by trade.
With the rapid growth of web search in recent years the problem of modeling its users has started to attract more and more attention of the information retrieval community. This has several motivations. By building a model of user behavior we are essentially developing a better understanding of a user, which ultimately helps us to deliver a better search experience. A model of user behavior can also be used as a predictive device for non-observed items such as document relevance, which makes it useful for improving search result ranking. Finally, in many situations experimenting with real users is just infeasible and hence user simulations based on accurate models play an essential role in understanding the implications of algorithmic changes to search engine results or presentation changes to the search engine result page. In this survey we summarize advances in modeling user click behavior on a web search engine result page. We present simple click models as well as more complex models aimed at capturing non-trivial user behavior patterns on modern search engine result pages. We discuss how these models compare to each other, what challenges they have, and what ways there are to address these challenges. We also study the problem of evaluating click models and discuss the main applications of click models.
W.M. Otto PhD was director of the IJsselmeerpolders Development Authority, in the Netherlands, from 1963 to 1967. His contribution to the first development of Flevoland, which had been newly reclaimed from the sea, was very important. So the name ‘starter motor of Flevoland’ is justified. In this biography has been told how he led the designing and the first phase of the development of the new towns Lelystad and Almere. Will Otto was a tireless lobbyist for the interests of the former and the future population of Flevoland. A lot of them were originally inhabitants of Amsterdam. Otto was at the same time ‘landdrost’ of the Southern IJsselmeerpolders Public Authority, in Lelystad as well as in Dronten. He exercised the duties and powers of the municipal council, the municipal executive and the mayor together. In practice Otto cooperated well with the advisory council, which had been elected by the citizens. Otto also contributed to the land-use planning and the forestry policy in the Netherlands. His first job was forester in Dutch East Indies (1946-1950). Later he developed a vision on saving the tropical rainforest, especially in Indonesia. He initiated PROSEA (Plant Resources of South East Asia). This international project published 24 manuals, based on a database. This describes economically useful plants and trees in Southeast Asia. The Mixtec, or the people of Ñuu Savi ('Nation of the Rain God'), one of the major civilizations of ancient Mesoamerica, made their home in the highlands of Oaxaca, where they resisted both Aztec military expansion and the Spanish conquest. In Encounter with the Plumed Serpent, two leading scholars present and interpret the sacred histories narrated in the Mixtec codices, the largest surviving collection of pre-Columbian manuscripts in existence. In these screenfold books, ancient painter-historians chronicled the politics of the Mixtec from approximately a.d. 900 to 1521, portraying the royal families, rituals, wars, alliances, and ideology of the times. By analyzing and cross-referencing the codices, which have been fragmented and dispersed in far-flung archives, the authors attempt to reconstruct Mixtec history. Their synthesis here builds on long examination of the ancient manuscripts. Wavelets from a Statistical Perspective offers a modern, 2nd generation look on wavelets, far beyond the rigid setting of the equispaced, dyadic wavelets in the early days. With the methods of this book, based on the lifting scheme, researchers can set up a wavelet or another multiresolution analysis adapted to their data, ranging from images to scattered data or other irregularly spaced observations. Whereas classical wavelets stand a bit apart from other nonparametric methods, this book adds a multiscale touch to your spline, kernel or local polynomial smoothing procedure, thereby extending its applicability to nonlinear, nonparametric processing for piecewise smooth data. One of the chapters of the book constructs B-spline wavelets on nonequispaced knots and multiscale local polynomial transforms. In another chapter, the link between wavelets and Fourier analysis, ubiquitous in the classical approach, is explained, but without being inevitable. In further chapters the discrete wavelet transform is contrasted with the continuous version, the nondecimated (or maximal overlap) transform taking an intermediate position. An important principle in designing a wavelet analysis through the lifting scheme is finding the right balance between bias and variance. Bias and variance also play a crucial role in the nonparametric smoothing in a wavelet framework, in finding well working thresholds or other smoothing parameters. The numerous illustrations can be reproduced with the online available, accompanying software. The software and the exercises can also be used as a starting point in the further exploration of the material.
Wavelet methods have become a widely spread tool in signal and image process ing tasks. This book deals with statistical applications, especially wavelet based smoothing. The methods described in this text are examples of non-linear and non parametric curve fitting. The book aims to contribute to the field both among statis ticians and in the application oriented world (including but not limited to signals and images). Although it also contains extensive analyses of some existing methods, it has no intention whatsoever to be a complete overview of the field: the text would show too much bias towards my own algorithms. I rather present new material and own insights in the questions involved with wavelet based noise reduction. On the other hand, the presented material does cover a whole range of methodologies, and in that sense, the book may serve as an introduction into the domain of wavelet smoothing. Throughout the text, three main properties show up ever again: sparsity, locality and multiresolution. Nearly all wavelet based methods exploit at least one of these properties in some or the other way. These notes present research results of the Belgian Programme on Interuniver sity Poles of Attraction, initiated by the Belgian State, Prime Minister's Office for Science, Technology and Culture. The scientific responsibility rests with me.
