Follow the electrifying footprints of my family through 400 years of American history. The scope and vision of the Godfrey family, is one of maritime history, fortune seeking and western expansion. With an aura of mystique, they were visionaries and dreamers. From high seas adventure, to colonial settlement, slave trading, pioneer exploration, to Civil War heroics, mountain climbing, Forty-Niner's Gold Rush, famous Indian fighters to establishing educational and church policy, the Godfrey legacy is varied, robust and compelling. Their incredible story; unsanitized, tainted with blemishes, scars and harsh realities of life, is revealed for the first time. This book may appeal to family researchers, genealogists, historical societies and libraries.
This provocative story illuminates the lives of 2 wayward adventure seekers. It's the unfortunate true account of myself and equally neurotic traveling companion. As young, naive gringos, we sought a mood altering pilgrimage to South America. We followed our siren's call towards drama, chaos and confusion in the jungles and mountains of the Inca Empire. For nearly a year, we played hide and seek from military police, danced the jig of civility while dodging the bullet of sanity. Exploits contained in this work are not intended for the squeamish, timid, faint of heart or too delicate. Graphic episodes may offend fragile, tightly wrapped and emotionally stable individuals. That being said, this narrative is equally seductive to extreme travel junkies and adventure seekers. A burgeoning population of recovery oriented Baby Boomers, will discover a niche of paradoxical insight. Arm chair travelers will be shocked, amused, entertained and educated. Hipsters will marvel at the high drama and drop dead humor.
This incredible book documents the personal saga of a Confederate soldier from Texas who fought with General Forrest and other southern heroes. It's a true account of Obed Christian's encounters against the Union Army in the south; containing original letters and documented eye witness accounts. Through handwritten letters, my Great Grandfather depicts the massive destruction of cities and hardships encountered by military existence. The stunning eyewitness account of his brother's death, horrifying massacre at Ft. Pillows and bloody combat at Harrisburg, recaptures the devastation of the Civil War. Unique and rare, this book is a MUST READ for all Civil War enthusiast. Students of history will marvel at the captivating personal memoirs and heart warming letters. Military scholars will be enlightened, informed and illuminated by brilliant wartime maneuvers and eye witness accounts. Finally, it belongs on the library shelf of every researcher and historical society.

This book examines the problem of food loss and waste (FLW) and the policies that could be enacted to remedy this fundamental global concern.
Arthur Simms was an amazing and exceptional man and this book has recently been described as an 'evergreen'perfect for any coffee table ! Arthur was a pioneer in UK hospitality education post Second World II. As a young boy he assisted his father Quisto, performing Punch and Judy to the royal children at Buckingham Palace by special warrant from Keith Prowse. It was a conducted trip to the palace kitchens to get an ice cream (unobtainable in the mid-1920s), that gave him the firm conviction to become a chef. Training at the only centre Westminster Technical Institute London, he gained a first class diploma, before undertaking experience at the Ciros Club Orange Street Piccadilly, well-known during the dance band era and at the Trocadero. A chance meeting with the niece of the French Ambassador, who on his day off became his dancing partner for the swing technique with the Joe Loss Orchestra Tottenham Court Road, also gained him a visa to work in Paris at the Carltons Hotel near Montmartre, Moulin Rouge and Sacre Coeur. This opportunity enabled him to meet the Chef of Kings and King of Chefs the famous Auguste Escoffier, at a Paris exhibition. On return to London he worked at the Savoy Caf Parisien, the Grand Hotel Leicester and the Gargoyle Club, owned by David Tennant and Lady Viola Tree in demimonde Soho. In 1939 and the outbreak of war saw a move to Aldershot, where he was selected as one of eight chef instructors for the newly formed Army Catering Corps. In 1945, as the Head Chef at the Potsdam Conference he was introduced to Stalin, Truman and Churchill. In 1946 he Arthur became the first Head of Hotel and Catering at Brighton Municipal College and gained membership of the Regional Advisory Council for the first City and Guilds of London Institute qualifications in professional cookery. He was appointed as a judge for the Salon Culinaire Hotelympia International Exhibition, London. Later in 1952, he was chosen as Head of Hotel and Catering in a new purpose-built wing of Portsmouth Municipal College, which he saw grow from local to international repute. In 1964 he was seconded for two years as Principal in Hotel and Catering to the new Pusa Institute, New Delhi India and under his leadership its reputation surpassed that of the first centre in Bombay. Arthur retired in 1977 and died in 2003. He is remembered today by hundreds of former students, colleagues and friends worldwide.
This investigation not only revises what historians have long thought of the attitude of barristers toward the French Revolution, but also offers insights into the corporate character of Old Regime society and how the Revolution affected it. Fitzsimmons's study suggests that many propertied commoners during the Revolution were not politically engaged, that they were not necessarily associated with a party or cause simply because of their place within a set of social relationships.
