Dan Burdette decides he will not play the fool for Stracht. After double-crossing Stracht in Panama, Dan flees to Geneva only to be imprisoned. Barbara Burdette gathers their friend, assisant US Attorney Mike Buckland and the game of cat and mouse begins. Yet, as Stracht plays his game, his boss plays Stracht -- and while Dan and Mike use the system to get Dan's freedom, Barbara decides the deal is not good enough and she plays her own game with the dangerous Stracht, using the tools that God had granted her. In the end, some have played the fools, some have been the fools, and not everyone comes out alive.

Francis Reginald Wingate (1861-1953) was a major figure in the political, administrative, and military history of the Middle East from the early 1880s until the end of WWI. As dir. of military intelligence in the British-officered Egyptian Army during the Sudan campaigns; as sirdar (commander-in-chief) of that army and gov.-gen. of the Sudan during the formative period of its colonial admin.; and as high commissioner in Egypt during the latter half of the first world war and the crisis that led to the Egyptian revolution of 1919, he stands with Cromer and Kitchener as architects of the British empire in the Middle East. Yet Wingate has received much less notice than his famous contemporaries such as Gordon of Khartoum and Lawrence of Arabia. This biography corrects the historical imbalance. Illus.

Research into the processes of tolerance and sensitization has escalated at a substantial rate in recent years, presumably because of the fundamental importance of understanding the long-term, as opposed simply to the initial, acute effects of drugs. The rapid of such research in recent years is documented c1early by growth the editors in the introductory chapter to this text. However, despite the fact that there is a very large amount of literature concemed with the effects of long-term drug treatment, there is, to the best of our knowledge, no published text that has ever attempted to integrate some of the many diverse findings that have been made in this area. Basic research has uncovered a num ber of different mechanisms by which tolerance and sensitization to drugs can develop. Such mechanisms are of very different types, involving psychological behavioral, metabolic, neuronal, and subcellular processes. Because of the complexity of each of these different types of mechanisms, with few exceptions, individual re searchers usually tend, understandably, to concentrate on their own specific areas of expertise, paying relatively little attention to rele vant research occurring in other areas. Consequently, they neglect or simply ignore the important question of the relative importance of the specific mechanism that they are studying, and the related question of the possible interrelationships that may exist between different mechanisms for the production of tolerance and sensitiza tion.

As the longest serving and the most influential bishop of Hong Kong during one of the most tumultuous periods in China’s history, Bishop R. O. Hall played a crucial role in the reconstruction of the Anglican Church and Hong Kong after the Second World War. Born in England, the bishop committed his life to building bridges: between China and England; between Hong Kong workers and company management; between the government and the Hong Kong people; and, of course, between the Hong Kong people he loved and the Divine he worshipped. His single-mindedness in pursuing and translating the social theology of F. D. Maurice into practical terms resulted in his enormous contributions to the development of social welfare, low-cost housing, and education in postwar Hong Kong and helped spur its economic and social evolution into a global city. This book highlights the two major controversies during his episcopacy: the ordination of a woman priest during the war and his visit to China during the “Hundred Flowers Campaign.” Based on primary archival and private materials, this book shows that Bishop Hall, whole-hearted in pursuit of his goals for Hong Kong through “love-in-action,” was also multifaceted, with longings, questions, and inner contradictions we all share.
