This book attempts to collect the fundamental concepts into a single, well-integrated, self-consistent exposition that will serve as a relatively painless introduction to the field of MV Engineering. The ultimate goal is an enlightened practitioner capable of using this powerful new technology effectively.
This book shows how prison officers may be able to significantly influence extra-programmatic conditions, to enhance rehabilitation outcomes and contribute to reducing reoffending. It does so through a detailed review of the literature relating to prison-based rehabilitation programmes, examining factors influencing their outcomes and the effects of the prison officer role. Firstly the book explores current understandings about the role of the prison and effective offender rehabilitation programmes. It then describes the processes of the integrative review of how prison officers can support rehabilitation programmes in prisons. Review findings suggest three main routes by which prison officers can contribute to enhancing rehabilitation outcomes: influencing prison social environments, enhancing prisoner treatment readiness and programme engagement and identifying and supporting prisoners’ wider needs. This book also explores avenues for further research in this area using a declarative sentence mapping approach. Bridging two previously distinct areas of research - prison officers and their role; and prison rehabilitation interventions – this book offers new understanding in the real-world context of prisons and their staff as to how we can enhance rehabilitation outcomes. It will be of great interest to academics in penology, forensic psychology, probation, and offender rehabilitation fields. The book is also valuable to postgraduate students and professionals working on prison policy.
Bringing together eight previously published essays by M. W. Rowe and a substantial new study of Larkin, this book emphasizes the profound affinities between philosophy and literature. Ranging over Plato, Shakespeare, Goethe, Arnold and Wittgenstein, the first five essays explore an anti-theoretical conception of philosophy. This sees the subject as less concerned with abstract arguments that result in theories, than with prompts intended to induce clarity of vision and psychical harmony. On this understanding, philosophy looks more like literature than logic. Conversely, the last four essays argue that literature is centrally concerned with truth and abstract thought, and that literature is therefore a more cognitive and philosophical enterprise than is commonly supposed.

Mesmerising, macabre and murderously funny. The Botanist is M.W. Craven at his sinister best. I couldn't love this series more' Chris Whitaker 'Another classy thriller from the king of Cumbrian crime' Paul Finch This is going to be the longest week of Washington Poe's life... Detective Sergeant Washington Poe can count on one hand the number of friends he has. And he'd still have his thumb left. There's the guilelessly innocent civilian analyst, Tilly Bradshaw of course. Insanely brilliant, she's a bit of a social hand grenade. He's known his beleaguered boss, Detective Inspector Stephanie Flynn for years as he has his nearest neighbour, full-time shepherd/part-time dog sitter, Victoria. And then there's Estelle Doyle. Dark and dangerous and sexy as hell. It's true the caustic pathologist has never walked down the sunny side of the street, but has she gone too far this time? Shot twice in the head, her father's murder appears to be an open and shut case. Estelle has firearms discharge residue on her hands, and, in a house surrounded by fresh snow, hers are the only footprints. Since her arrest she's only said three words: 'Tell Washington Poe.' Meanwhile, a poisoner called the Botanist is sending the nation's most reviled people poems and pressed flowers. Twisted and ingenious, he seems to be able to walk through walls and, despite the advance notice given to his victims, and regardless of the security measures taken, he is able to kill with impunity. Poe hates locked room mysteries and now he has two to solve. To unravel them he's going to have to draw on every resource he has: Tilly Bradshaw, an organised crime boss, even an alcoholic ex-journalist. Because if he doesn't, the bodies are going to keep piling up . . . Straminipilous Fungi presents a critical comparative review of the morphology and ultrastructure, morphogenesis, cytology, molecular biology and evolution of the biflagellate fungi. These organisms encompass the fungi formerly called oomycetes; taxonomically related heterotrophs studied by mycologists; plasmodiophorids and other heterotrophs. Appropriate comparisons are made with chromophyte algae, marine heterotrophs and chytridiaceous fungi. Little-known taxa which have been referred to the various orders of flagellate fungi are also listed together with citations. A new hierarchical classification is presented which is supported by systematic accounts and synoptic keys. Dichotomous keys based on habitat and habit are given to all known species of lagenidiaceous fungi, labyrinthulids and plasmodiophorids. A unique `one stop' reference resource for plant pathologists is provided by the binominal lists, including host-related lists for the downy mildews. The book, including ca 4000 references, is a major text for post-graduate and research workers, particularly freshwater and marine biologists, soil ecologists and plant pathologists.
The first biography of the philosopher who became a mastermind of Allied intelligence in World War Two. Austere, witty, and formidable, J. L. Austin (1911-1960) was the leader of Oxford Ordinary Language Philosophy and the founder of speech-act theory. This book—the first full-length biography of Austin—enhances our understanding of his dominance in 1950s Oxford, examining the significance of his famous Saturday morning seminars, and his sometimes tense relationships with Gilbert Ryle, Isaiah Berlin, A. J. Ayer, and Elizabeth Anscombe. Throwing new light on Austin's own intellectual development, it probes the strengths and weaknesses of his mature philosophy, and reconstructs his late unpublished work on sound symbolism. Austin's philosophical work remains highly influential, but much less well known is his outstanding contribution to British Intelligence in World War Two. The twelve central chapters thus investigate Austin's part in the North African campaign, the search for the V-weapons, the preparations for D-Day, the Battle of Arnhem, and the Ardennes Offensive, and show that, in the case of D-Day, he played a major role in the ultimate Allied victory. While exploring Austin's dramatic and romantic personal history, Rowe pays close attention to his harsh schooling and pre-war affair with a married Frenchwoman; his wartime marriage, bomb injury, and response to a colleague's murder; and his post-war family life, the growing influence of America, and his tragically premature death. Adding considerably to our knowledge of World War Two, and Austin's diverse and enduring influence, this biography reveals the true complexity of his character, and the full range and significance of his achievements.
This study is an examination of the principal ancient translations of Gen. 4.1-16 in the Hebrew Bible. The goal is to understand the translation techniques adopted by the translators, to what extent external influences may have affected their work, and how each version communicates its message through its literary form. In addition to the versional renderings of the Hebrew text, this inquiry also takes into account various ancient Jewish and Christian interpretations of the Cain narrative. The primary focus of the work is on the diverse exegetical tendencies of Hebrew Bible translation in the ancient world and on how these interpretations were transmitted in particular cultural milieus.

The Prime Minister eventually lets the OSC loose. The OSC are Britain's first and last line of offence.
Topics involved in studies of the Earth's magnetic field and its secular variation range from the intricate observations of geomagnetism, to worldwide studies of archeomagnetism and paleomagnetism, through to the complex mathematics of dynamo theory. Traditionally these different aspects of geomagnetism have in the main been studied and presented in isolation from each other. This text draws together these lines of inquiry into an integrated framework to highlight the interrelationships and thus to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the geomagnetic field.
In Daily Giving Service: A History of the Diocesan Girls’ School, Hong Kong, Moira M. W. Chan-Yeung and her fellow contributors present a comprehensive history of one of Hong Kong’s oldest girls’ schools. As an alumna of the school, Chan-Yeung traces the history of her alma mater from its establishment in 1860, its development over the last 150 years until the recent decade. Having experienced stability and turbulences in Hong Kong in the twentieth century, the school has become one of the most prominent girl’s schools in the city. In several chapters written by other alumni, various aspects of school life of different eras are reconstructed and remembered. The author and other contributors focused on the postwar era in which Hong Kong grew from a small city to a global metropolitan. The expansion of the Diocesan Girls’ School largely followed this trend. The history of the school has also long been connected with the socio-economic development of Hong Kong society, sharing its happiness and sadness. “This book is likely to become the gold standard against which all future school histories in Hong Kong are judged. Comprehensive, insightful, and full of fascinating anecdote, the inspiring story of DGS is told both chronologically in Moira Chan’s main text and thematically in the specialist chapters contributed by her co-authors. This is a school history that tells us much about the larger story of education in Hong Kong while focusing on a single educational institution.” —Peter Cunich, Director, Centenary History Project, The University of Hong Kong “The history of DGS reinforces my observation that Hong Kong schools form an unusual system that combines the best of East and West in the philosophy and practice of education. The younger schools in Hong Kong that mushroomed later were basically modelled after schools such as DGS. That accounts for the excellence envied by many.” —Cheng Kai-ming, SBS, JP, Professor Emeritus, The University of Hong Kong “The history of DGS reveals how the path taken by the school over the years reflects the very qualities that define a person. DGS, like our home Hong Kong, has witnessed in equal measure challenges, disasters, and triumphs, and has dealt with them with equanimity. Dignity, respect, tolerance, courage, fairness, honesty, and of course excellence—underpinned by pastoral care—represent those essential qualities that have had to be called upon. As we now know, they have become the minimum tools expected of her students to realise fully their true potential in life and properly contribute to our community. This is their story.” —The Honourable Mr Geoffrey Ma Tao-li, GBM, Former Chief Justice of the Court of Final Appeal (2010–2021)

Mathematics majors at Michigan State University take a "Capstone" course near the end of their undergraduate careers. The content of this course varies with each offering. Its purpose is to bring together different topics from the undergraduate curriculum and introduce students to a developing area in mathematics. This text was originally written for a Capstone course. Basic wavelet theory is a natural topic for such a course. By name, wavelets date back only to the 1980s. On the boundary between mathematics and engineering, wavelet theory shows students that mathematics research is still thriving, with important applications in areas such as image compression and the numerical solution of differential equations. The author believes that the essentials of wavelet theory are sufficiently elementary to be taught successfully to advanced undergraduates. This text is intended for undergraduates, so only a basic background in linear algebra and analysis is assumed. We do not require familiarity with complex numbers and the roots of unity.
In December 1915, as the First World War wore on, Acadian leaders meeting in New Brunswick deplored how soldiers from their communities were “lost in the crowd” of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. They successfully lobbied the federal government for the creation of an Acadian national unit that would be French-speaking, Catholic, and led by their own. More than a thousand Acadians from across the Maritime provinces, Quebec, and the American northeast answered the call. In Lost in the Crowd Gregory Kennedy draws on military archives, census records, newspapers, and soldiers’ letters to present a new kind of military history focusing on the experiences of Acadian soldiers and their families before, during, and after the war. He shows that Acadians were just as likely to enlist as their English-speaking counterparts across the Maritimes, though the backgrounds of the volunteers were quite different. Kennedy tackles controversial topics often missing from the previous historiography, such as underage recruits, desertion, and army discipline. With the help of the 1921 Canadian Census, he explores the factors that influenced post-war outcomes, both positive and negative, for soldiers, families, and communities. Lost in the Crowd offers a completely new and replicable approach to the traditional regimental history, reconstituting the lives of soldiers and their families. The focus on the Acadians, a francophone minority group in the Maritime provinces, significantly shifts our understanding of French Canada and the First World War.

Adam Blankenship, a young war correspondent embedded with the US Army is badly wounded during the early days of the Iraq War. In an attempt to save lives, he fired an auto-grenade gun to stop an inbound suicide truck bomber. His reward, returning to L.A. broken and angry after losing his job along with his lower right leg. Adam becomes a full-blown alcoholic with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) who takes Vicodin to numb the pain. He embarks on a novel about covering the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It might help him uncover the truth about why he was disgracefully fired from his job, then kicked out of the military hospital in Germany. It was likely because Adam ran afoul of the powerful Colonel Shilling, calling him out for chasing Jihadis into the desert rather than helping the dead and wounded after the ambush. He took what was left of their operational vehicles and security, abandoning the men. The colonel pressured authorities to classify the ambush and lawyers from the Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) coerced Adam into signing a Non-disclosure Agreement, forcing Adam to disguise his true account of the war as fiction to please his nervous publisher. Sarah Murry, Adam's stepsister and forbidden first love, is a tall, green-eyed beauty. A B-movie actress filming a 1970's gangster movie starring one of the famous Goodwin brothers, she's not sure which one. Multitalented, she is also a painter who works long nights on large, abstract oils brimming with vibrant imagery, symbols, and pop-mythology. Sarah has loved Adam since he protected her from the mean girls in high school. She can see his struggle with pills and booze, but stands by him even after he brawls with her surfer boyfriend Johnny. They move into a hostel in Venice Beach then meet Bobby, a punk rock poet who hates the world. They become roommates, fast friends, and rivals as Adam fights to get his book published in full, risking jail time to get the truth out and clear his name. Hemingway Days and Bukowski Nights depicts three young artists who work just as hard as they play. It's also ponders the pain and stupidity of war, how to live with PTSD, carry the regrets and loss and try to live a better life after trauma. Let fear pass through you. Have the courage to tell the truth. Maybe, even find a chance at love.
Why do contemporary Christians seem to routinely talk past one another amid contentious theological debates? In this illuminating study, Sean M. W. McGuire argues that interpreters' lack of self-critical reflection on the process of interpretation and compounding cultural factors are problematizing interpretive practice. Thus, to work through difficult topics, Christians need to develop the ability to reflect on the complexity informing how they interpret Scripture, and how they see others interpreting Scripture, so that they can coherently and constructively discuss their interpretations with others. Grounding the study in the discipline of practical theology, McGuire utilizes the cultural theory of metamodernism and the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002), together with a proposed revision of the Wesleyan Quadrilateral, to develop a paradigm for observing and describing differences in biblical interpretive practice. Using current debates regarding sexuality as an illustrative example, the project reveals the complexity underlying contemporary interpretive practice, showing that amid this complexity the prioritization (or lack thereof) of theological reflection sources prompts certain interpretive conclusions. Perceiving the multivalent nature of interpretation, readers will be equipped to think carefully and critically about how they come to their biblical interpretive conclusions and how those conclusions inform transformed living in Christ.
Cytokines are peptide or protein cell-to-cell signaling molecules that play vital roles in normal cell and tissue homeostasis, as well as in responses to infectious agents. Because of their importance in virtually all forms of pathology, the pharmaceutical industry is devoting great effort to develop methods for the control of cytokine synthesis or action. This is the first volume to bring together experts from academia and the pharmaceutical industry to discuss problems and solutions in the therapeutic control of cytokines. An introductory section reviews the biology, physiology, and pathology of cytokines. Internationally recognized scientists then discuss the development of low molecular mass inhibitors, including inhibitors of cytokine convertases and oligonucleotide drugs. The potential use of natural inhibitors such as soluble receptors, interleukin-1 receptor antagonists, and anti-cytokine antibodies is detailed. This interesting book also covers intracellular signaling pathways induced by pro-inflammatory cytokines and the bio-modulatory activity of specific cytokines such as TGF-ß. Therapeutic Modulation of Cytokines will interest academic scientists in biochemistry, cell biology, pharmacology, and molecular biology and biological scientists in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries.
