It is 1971 and Carrolton, Michigan has a rapist on the loose. The sister of one of the victims knows who the rapist is, but cannot prove it. The fact that he is a Catholic priest could protect him from answering for his crimes. Lives are ruined and souls lost before “Sister” Margaret Breiding carries out the plan that brings an end to Father Edward Mueller’s evil acts. In her quest for vigilante style justice, Sister Margaret finds that the vocations of some men and women who serve the Catholic Church are fragile at best.
We are today encountering numerous sustainable health concerns in relation to the existential threats caused by ecological and global changes. This book illustrates the ways in which health is being affected by anthropogenic human impacts on the environment, as well as climate change. It highlights synergistic, interventional approaches towards sustainable healthcare, together with innovative conceptual frameworks and models for facing the changing demands of our health needs under these current epidemiological and health transitions. It also sets out a vision of ecological principles to guide our professional directions with regards to sustainable health developments as legacy-based values across generations.

Provides an overview of healthcare spending and the cost-containment mechanisms that have lead to an increasingly corporate style of healthcare in the US. It also looks at what happens to doctor-patient relationships in a managed care system and how good doctor-patient relationships could contribute to health promotion and to social capital. The book concludes with policy implications, including the applicability of lessons to other areas, such as environmental protection and policing.

Fully updated second edition of the premier reference book on muffler and lined duct acoustical performance Engine exhaust noise pollutes the street environment and ventilation fan noise enters dwellings along with fresh air. People have become conscious of their working environment. Governments of most countries have responded to popular demand with mandatory restrictions on sound emitted by automotive engines, and a thorough knowledge of acoustics of ducts and mufflers is needed for the design of efficient muffler configurations. This fully updated Second Edition of Acoustics of Ducts and Mufflers deals with propagation, reflection and dissipation/absorption of sound along ducts/pipes/tubes, area discontinuities, perforated elements and absorptive linings that constitute the present-day mufflers and silencers designed to control noise of exhaust and intake systems of automotive engines, diesel-generator sets, compressors and HVAC systems. It includes equations, figures, tables, references, and solved examples and unsolved exercises with answers, so it can be used as a text book as well as a reference book. It also offers a complete presentation and analysis of the major topics in sound suppression and noise control for the analysis and design of acoustical mufflers, air conditioning and ventilation duct work. Both the fundamentals and the latest technology are discussed, with an emphasis on applications. Deals with reactive mufflers, dissipative silencers, the frequency-domain approach, and the time-domain approach. Fully updated second edition of the premier reference book on muffler and lined duct acoustical performance, in one complete volume Presents original new research on topics including baffle silencers and louvers, 3D analytical techniques, and flow-acoustic analysis of multiply-connected perforated-element mufflers Includes a general design procedure to help muffler designers in the automotive industry, exhaust noise being a major component of automobile and traffic noise pollution Written by an expert with four decades’ experience in teaching to graduate students, publishing extensively in reputed international journals, and consulting with industry for noise control as well as designing for quietness
An account of a new theory and method of voting, judging and ranking, majority judgment, shown to be superior to all other known methods. In Majority Judgment, Michel Balinski and Rida Laraki argue that the traditional theory of social choice offers no acceptable solution to the problems of how to elect, to judge, or to rank. They find that the traditional model--transforming the "preference lists" of individuals into a "preference list" of society--is fundamentally flawed in both theory and practice. Balinski and Laraki propose a more realistic model. It leads to an entirely new theory and method--majority judgment--proven superior to all known methods. It is at once meaningful, resists strategic manipulation, elicits honesty, and is not subject to the classical paradoxes encountered in practice, notably Condorcet's and Arrow's. They offer theoretical, practical, and experimental evidence--from national elections to figure skating competitions--to support their arguments. Drawing on insights from wine, sports, music, and other competitions, Balinski and Laraki argue that the question should not be how to transform many individual rankings into a single collective ranking, but rather, after defining a common language of grades to measure merit, how to transform the many individual evaluations of each competitor into a single collective evaluation of all competitors. The crux of the matter is a new model in which the traditional paradigm--to compare--is replaced by a new paradigm--to evaluate.
Contributions to this volume explore the idea of Marlowe as a working artist, in keeping with John Addington Symonds' characterization of him as a "sculptor-poet." Throughout the body of his work-including not only the poems and plays, but also his forays into translation and imitation-a distinguished company of established and emerging literary scholars traces how Marlowe conceives an idea, shapes and refines it, then remakes and remodels it, only to refashion it further in his writing process. These essays necessarily overlap with one another in the categories of lives, stage, and page, which signals their interdependent nature regarding questions of authorship, theater and performance history, as well as interpretive issues within the works themselves. The contributors interpret and analyze the disputed facts of Marlowe's life, the textual difficulties that emerge from the staging of his plays, the critical investigations arising from analyses of individual works, and their relationship to those of his contemporaries. The collection engages in new ways the controversies and complexities of its subject's life and art. It reflects the flourishing state of Marlowe studies as it shapes the twenty-first century conception of the poet and playwright as master craftsman.
Padre Pio is known as the priest with the stigmata, the five wounds of Christ, which he bore for fifty years. They are many books telling of his miracles, healings, spiritual gifts of bilocation, reading of consciences, prophecies, and many more. There are none written specifically on the theology of Padre Pio--the spiritual principles he lived by. These principles can be summed up in the understanding of Redemptive Suffering. It was "the way of Padre Pio." In his own words, St. Pio tells us how to love the Mass, his participation in the Mass, the Madonna, how to pray, to survive the Dark Night, as well as its purpose, the importance of purgatory, and how to use the pain in our life to sanctify ourself and others. Most importantly, he tells us why God allows suffering, its purpose in our lives, and how to heal others with it. Any spiritual child of Padre Pio who seeks to know and understand this saint will find, in simple words, how to live out the spiritual principles he lived by.Filled with over four hundred citations and sixty references from St. Pio and other Redemptive Suffering saints, such as St. Faustina Kowalska, St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and St. Teresa of Avila, The Way of Padre Pio is well documented. Each saint offers their understanding and experiences of suffering and how they used it to live joyous lives, and not only live joyously but heal others with it.The Way of Padre Pio weaves the basic tools of Redemptive Suffering--penance and reparation, which take the form of suffering and sacrifice--into common areas of life and how to use them to sanctify ourself and others. It is how to live the Redemptive Life in all circumstances and answer Mary's call at Fatima to offer ourselves as Victims for the salvation of the world. There are additional resources through the website, friendsofpadrepio.com, that include bookmarks, prayers, and reading materials, as well as how to begin a prayer group at your parish.
