Lights and Darks aren’t supposed to be friends. And yet, she finds herself drawn to him despite the forces around them trying to keep them apart. As a Dark Nephilim, CALEB has spent his whole life hating Lights, so when his teacher volunteers him for a transfer opportunity to the Light school in Alexandria, he is opposed to the idea. Until she reveals that his grandfather is imprisoned at the academy, and Caleb decides that being the one Dark in a school full of Lights will be worth the prejudice he’ll face for the chance to set him free. But then Caleb meets Luna, and suddenly, releasing his grandfather is no longer his priority. Luna is a Light. Caleb shouldn’t like her. And yet, he finds himself feeling things for her despite duty, logic, and sense warning him not to. Luna and Caleb are prepared to fight for each other, but with a prophecy and the threat of a second Fall to contend with, they’ll face greater hurdles than just their differing bloodlines. Can they overcome the ancient rift between their kind, proving love can prevail over hate? Or will their budding relationship become another casualty to war?

From 1937 to 1949, Beijing was in a state of crisis. The combined forces of Japanese occupation, civil war, runaway inflation, and reformist campaigns and revolutionary efforts wreaked havoc on the city’s economy, upset the political order, and threatened the social and moral fabric as well. Women, especially lower-class women living in Beijing’s tenement neighborhoods, were among those most affected by these upheavals. Delving into testimonies from criminal case files, Zhao Ma explores intimate accounts of lower-class women’s struggles with poverty, deprivation, and marital strife. By uncovering the set of everyday tactics that women devised and utilized in their personal efforts to cope with predatory policies and crushing poverty, this book reveals an urban underworld that was built on an informal economy and conducted primarily through neighborhood networks. Where necessary, women relied on customary practices, hierarchical patterns of household authority, illegitimate relationships, and criminal entrepreneurship to get by. Women’s survival tactics, embedded in and reproduced by their everyday experience, opened possibilities for them to modify the male-dominated city and, more importantly, allowed women to subtly deflect, subvert, and “escape without leaving” powerful forces such as the surveillance state, reformist discourse, and revolutionary politics during and beyond wartime Beijing.

A muster meant that men in the local shires were called together to identify those able to serve in the King's army. The muster records thereby created represent a valuable source of information about the local military resources and also gives the names of those involved. The documents which form the subject of this edition, the Herefordshire muster books for 1539 and 1542, came into existence during two military and diplomatic crises. Neither lasted long. The first was during Thomas Cromwell's term of office, the second after his fall. The first crisis was precipitated by the rapprochement between France and the Emperor Charles V signalled by the Treaty of Toledo on 12 January 1539; these powers then withdrew their ambassadors from London and made demonstrations of apparent warlike intent. Henry VIII's Council, then dominated by Thomas Cromwell, called for musters throughout the country. The commissions of array represent an attempt to discover the country's military resources
