Can love overcome millennia of hate? Life hasn’t been kind to LUNA, and after spending the last year in a psychiatric hospital, she doesn’t believe she has much of a future. Until she meets the new doctor with the strange golden glow who tells her she’s special and doesn’t belong there. When he transfers her out of the facility to a school in Egypt for children with angelic blood, Luna begins to realize there might be more to her troubled past than she has always believed…and that a future might be possible for her after all. But Luna is an outcast everywhere she goes, and in the one place where she’s meant to belong, she finds solace in the one person she shouldn’t. Caleb is a Dark. Lights and Darks aren’t supposed to be friends. And yet, she finds herself drawn to him despite the forces around them trying to keep them apart. As a Dark Nephilim, CALEB has spent his whole life hating Lights, so when his teacher volunteers him for a transfer opportunity to the Light school in Alexandria, he is opposed to the idea. Until she reveals that his grandfather is imprisoned at the academy, and Caleb decides that being the one Dark in a school full of Lights will be worth the prejudice he’ll face for the chance to set him free. But then Caleb meets Luna, and suddenly, releasing his grandfather is no longer his priority. Luna is a Light. Caleb shouldn’t like her. And yet, he finds himself feeling things for her despite duty, logic, and sense warning him not to. Luna and Caleb are prepared to fight for each other, but with a prophecy and the threat of a second Fall to contend with, they’ll face greater hurdles than just their differing bloodlines. Can they overcome the ancient rift between their kind, proving love can prevail over hate? Or will their budding relationship become another casualty to war?

From 1937 to 1949, Beijing was in a state of crisis. The combined forces of Japanese occupation, civil war, runaway inflation, and reformist campaigns and revolutionary efforts wreaked havoc on the city’s economy, upset the political order, and threatened the social and moral fabric as well. Women, especially lower-class women living in Beijing’s tenement neighborhoods, were among those most affected by these upheavals. Delving into testimonies from criminal case files, Zhao Ma explores intimate accounts of lower-class women’s struggles with poverty, deprivation, and marital strife. By uncovering the set of everyday tactics that women devised and utilized in their personal efforts to cope with predatory policies and crushing poverty, this book reveals an urban underworld that was built on an informal economy and conducted primarily through neighborhood networks. Where necessary, women relied on customary practices, hierarchical patterns of household authority, illegitimate relationships, and criminal entrepreneurship to get by. Women’s survival tactics, embedded in and reproduced by their everyday experience, opened possibilities for them to modify the male-dominated city and, more importantly, allowed women to subtly deflect, subvert, and “escape without leaving” powerful forces such as the surveillance state, reformist discourse, and revolutionary politics during and beyond wartime Beijing.
The Search for a Vanishing Beijing weaves the genres of travel essays and travel guides into a comprehensive narrative about the cultural mosaic of the capital of China.
This is a question-and-answer companion that allows you to evaluate your mastery of the subject matter. It is made up of approximately 390 questions divided into 39 individual quizzes each that correspond to chapters in the textbook.
In complex macromolecules, minor modifications can generate major changes, due to self-assembling capacities of macromolecular or supramolecular networks. Controlled Drug Delivery highlights how the multifunctionality of several materials can be achieved and valorized for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical applications. Topics covered in this comprehensive book include: the concept of self-assembling; starch and derivatives as pharmaceutical excipients; and chitosan and derivatives as biomaterials and as pharmaceutical excipients. Later chapters discuss polyelectrolyte complexes as excipients for oral administration; and natural semi-synthetic and synthetic materials. Closing chapters cover protein-protein associative interactions and their involvement in bioformulations; self-assembling materials, implants and xenografts; and provide conclusions and perspectives. - Offers novel perspectives of a new concept: how minor alterations can induce major self-stabilization by cumulative forces exerted at short and long distances - Gives guidance on how to approach modifications of biopolymers for drug delivery systems and materials for implants - Describes structure-properties relationships in proposed excipients, drug delivery systems and biomedical materials

A muster meant that men in the local shires were called together to identify those able to serve in the King's army. The muster records thereby created represent a valuable source of information about the local military resources and also gives the names of those involved. The documents which form the subject of this edition, the Herefordshire muster books for 1539 and 1542, came into existence during two military and diplomatic crises. Neither lasted long. The first was during Thomas Cromwell's term of office, the second after his fall. The first crisis was precipitated by the rapprochement between France and the Emperor Charles V signalled by the Treaty of Toledo on 12 January 1539; these powers then withdrew their ambassadors from London and made demonstrations of apparent warlike intent. Henry VIII's Council, then dominated by Thomas Cromwell, called for musters throughout the country. The commissions of array represent an attempt to discover the country's military resources
This book is derived from the author's Concise guide to ethics in mental health care, published in 2004. It has been revised, updated, and rewritten with new chapters, topics and data.
A graduate-level one-volume textbook and reference work on the structure and physics of atomic nuclei. Throughout this book the underlying emphasis is on how a nucleus is constituted through the interaction between the nucleons. The book is structured into three parts: the first part contains a detailed treatment of the two-nucleon force and of basic model-independent nuclear properties the second part discusses the experimental results of nuclear models and their bases in fundamental theory the third part deals in some detail with alpha-decay and fission.
We follow celebrities on Twitter and Facebook, watch them on television, and read about them in supermarket checkout lines. Our relationship with celebrities has never been so immediate. Their personal trials are news headlines and water cooler talk. Offering the first extensive look at celebrity health sagas, this book examines the ways in which their stories become our stories, influencing public perception and framing dialog about wellness, disease and death. These private-yet-public narratives drive fund-raising, reduce stigma and influence policy. Celebrities such as Mary Tyler Moore, Robin Roberts, Michael J. Fox, and Christopher Reeve--as well as 200 others included in the study--have left a lasting legacy.
This book is concerned with the configuration of polymers at the interfacial zone between two other phases or immiscible components. In recent years, developments in technology combined with increased attention from specialists in a wide range of fields have resulted in a considerable increase in our understanding of the behavior of polymers at interfaces. Inevitably these advances have generated a wealth of literature and although there have been numerous reviews, a critical treatment with adequate descriptions of both theory and experiment, including detailed analysis of the two, has been missing. This text hopes to fill this gap, providing a timely and comprehensive account of the field as it stands today. This long needed work will be invaluable to experts as well as newcomers in the broad field of polymers, interfaces and colloids, both in industry and academia. Whilst industrial laboratories involved in this field will find it indispensable, it will be equally important to anyone with an interest in interfacial polymer or colloidal research.
“The commentary elevates the text to something that will help students learn strong techniques and understand what examiners want.” Charles Barker, Senior Lecturer, University of Portsmouth Law Express Question and Answer: Company Law is designed to help you get the most out of every answer you write by improving your understanding of what examiners are looking for, helping you to focus in on the question being asked and showing you how even a good answer can be improved.
