This book gives a unified presentation of different mathematical tools used to solve classical problems like Plateau's problem, Bernstein's problem, Dirichlet's problem for the Minimal Surface Equation and the Capillary problem.The fundamental idea is a quite elementary geometrical definition of codimension one surfaces. The isoperimetric property of the Euclidean balls, together with the modern theory of partial differential equations are used to solve the 19th Hilbert problem. Also included is a modern mathematical treatment of capillary problems.
It's common knowledge that in developing countries--Africa, India, Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America--the burden of HIV/AIDS falls disproportionately on women, who are generally the victims of male carriers of the disease. In this book, Roman Catholic women theologians from all over the world will discuss the pandemic in terms of their particular geographical and social location. The model for the volume is Continuum's "Catholic Ethicists on HIV/AIDS Prevention" (2000), edited by James Keenan, S.J. The occasion or impetus for the volume was the First International Crosscultural Conference for Catholic Theological Ethicists, single-handedly created by James Keenan (he raised 3/4 of a million dollars) and held at Padua, July 2006. (The plenary sessions will be published by Continuum under the title "Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church." ) The mentors for the volume will be James Keenan (editor Iozzio's Doktorvater) and Margaret Farley, "America's leading Catholic feminist theological ethicist" (19 Dec. review of "Just Love" in "America"). Farley's advocacy both in the US and Africa on the issue of women and AIDS is renowned, and she will be the best-known contributor. The leading contributor from English-speaking Europe is Linda Hogan from Trinity College Dublin.
This paper develops a model incorporating asymmetric government expenditure behavior in response to a windfall revenue gain occasioned by a transitory commodity boom. The model is used to illustrate the transitional dynamics of a stylized economy during the boom period and the nature of the macroeconomic disequilibria which emerge in the post-boom period. Country case studies of Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Kenya support the model’s predictions and the protracted nature of adjustment following the waning of the boom.
Commonly cited environmental instruments in the legal, regulatory, and fiscal domains are intended primarily to address market failures to ensure that environmental degradation and resource use is contained to appropriate levels. However, in many instances, environmental degradation is rooted not in market failure, but rather in policy failure. This paper identifies areas of public expenditure policy that interact with the environment. It argues that a reform of certain types of subsidies, increased operations and maintenance expenditures, and a thorough environmental assessment of capital projects will tend to benefit the environment, thereby moving an economy towards ‘sustainable’ development.
