This annotated Civil War memoir provides a detailed account of General Morgan’s famous battles and raids from a Confederate soldier’s perspective. John Marion Porter grew up working at his family's farm and dry goods store in Butler County, Kentucky. He was studying to become a lawyer when the Civil War began. As the son of a family of slave owners, Porter identified with the Southern cause and quickly enlisted in the Confederate army. He and his lifelong friend Thomas Henry Hines served in the Ninth Kentucky Calvary under John Hunt Morgan, the “Thunderbolt of the Confederacy.” When the war ended, Porter began writing detailed memoirs of his experiences during the war years, including tales of scouting behind enemy lines, sabotaging a Union train, being captured and held as a prisoner of war, and searching for an army to join after his release. Editor Kent Masterson Brown spent several years preparing Porter's memoir for publication, clarifying details and adding annotations to provide historical context. One of Morgan's Men is a fascinating firsthand account of the life of a Confederate soldier.

We Were Warriors Once is a military-political suspense novel. It chronicles the careers of four officers from the 1960s to the 1990s. Military promotions are based on an up-or-out systemyou either progress within specified time frames or you get left behind. Many officers who retire from their military careers at the Pentagon go through the revolving door and return in short order either as defense contract employees or civil servants. Not infrequently, they return to the same office where they worked before retiring. The same holds true for many political appointees. Men who once worked in Washington go off for a period to high-level assignments with defense contractors and return to influential positions in government. These revolving doors can sometimes have unintended negative consequences. President, and former five-star general, Dwight D. Eisenhowers warning against the power of the military-industrial complex is well known. However, that complex is actually tri-foldmilitary, industrial, and political. We Were Warriors Once incorporates revised editions of two previously published novels, Duty and Character and Wrong Enemy, Wrong War, with entirely new material that plumbs deeper into the defense contractors influence on national defense policies. The officers who wear the uniforms of the United States armed forces are by in large extraordinarily dedicated men and women. But in the profession of war, sometimes even the best are tempted at times to stray from the straight and narrow.

Their little spot, surrounded by a meadow often filled with elk and a forest with breezes singing through the needles of evergreen trees, offered habitat for wildlife precious to dangerous, from mushrooms to birds, wildflowers to backyard skunks. Thinking of birds invited forays into how some birds acquired their names and occasional swoops into bird business such as catching flies. Morgan Spring is witness to a rich geological history beginning in the shadow of Mount Mazama of the Cascade Mountains. The richness of human history ranges from bad to good and entertaining. The health of the ecology of Morgan Spring country is also varied, but its outcome hopeful. We rarely saw neighbors. When we did, it was a delight knowing that they also loved Morgan Spring.
