Truth is a timely and seminal book that gives marketers the tools they need to win over today's wary consumers.; The author is a renowned marketing consultant with major companies on his client roster. He has written articles for numerous publications including Brandweek, Advertising Age, and the Journal of Brand Management. He shows readers how to: promote more persuasively; achieve greater returns through integrity in marketing; replace their pricing strategy with a more convincing value promise; build stronger customer partnerships; and seize the lead share of credibility in a hypercompetive marketplace.

This book makes quantitative finance (almost) easy! Its new visual approach makes quantitative finance accessible to a broad audience, including those without strong backgrounds in math or finance. Michael Lovelady introduces a simplified but powerful technique for calculating profit probabilities and graphically representing the outcomes. Lovelady's "pictures" highlight key characteristics of structured securities such as the increased likelihood of profits, the level of virtual dividends being generated, and market risk exposures. After explaining his visual approach, he applies it to one of today's hottest investing trends: lower-volatility, higher-income strategies. Because of today's intense interest in alternative investments and structured securities, this book reviews their unique advantages to investors, managers and advisors of retail and institutional portfolios. Visual Quantitative Finance focuses on key topics directly related to the design, pricing and communication of structured securities, including stochastic price projections and the framework underlying options pricing formulas. The key is Lovelady's explicit use of probabilities in a spreadsheet format. By working directly with the underlying assumptions, he transforms the Black-Scholes framework into five columns of a simple Excel spreadsheet, with no complicated formulas -- making structured securities far more intuitive to design, evaluate and manage. For all investors, students, and financial professionals who are interested in quantitative finance, risk measurement, options pricing, structured securities, or financial model building - and for everyone who needs to explain these topics to someone else. For those with quantitative backgrounds, this guide offers powerful new tools for design and risk management, simplifying the design and evaluation of innovative instruments. For everyone else, Lovelady makes the subject comprehensible for the first time.

In The Cost of Not Educating the World’s Poor, Lynn Ilon observes from her 30 years of travel and work in some 20 developing countries, how global instability, problems of environmental degradation, spread of global disease, migration and political instability are a cost of viewing the uneducated poor as separated from a networked of fast-growing global knowledge. This book shows how powerful global learning systems are rapidly forming and linking the rich world with the world of the poor and developing nations. Using a narrative voice interleaved with concise introductions to the underlying theories (economics, development, learning, technology and networks) it shows us how changing our ways of thinking can lead to new possibilities. The Cost of Not Educating the World’s Poor is based on an emerging theory of development economics and the author’s own vast experiences and stories. It also discusses, among other issues: International development and how it has evolved toward an emphasis on knowledge How networked human capital creates new potential for poorly resourced countries The formation of a global system of learning networks The digitization of knowledge How nations improve their well-being through knowledge and equity This inter-disciplinary assessment of international learning inequality and the methods to overcome it will appeal to researchers concerned with emerging concepts of global learning networks and their effects on development. It will also be of interest to students and policymakers studying national inequality, economics, and global development.

This book focuses on the valuation needed to apply IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), and provides coverage of financial instruments – indeed this is the starting point of the exposition. The book adopts a logical sequence where models of financial instruments are explained first and models of other assets (such as property, an enterprise, or multiple intangibles) are presented as extensions. The book uses mathematical notation in presenting many of the models, but the focus is on application rather than proof. The mathematics is presented at a level that assumes sufficient background in high school algebra and coordinate geometry, prior knowledge of elementary probability, and a knowledge of basic statistics. Readers should also be aware of what linear regression does and should be able to run a regression and interpret the output. Calculus is not assumed. The models discussed almost always require a computer to apply. However, the emphasis is on understanding the models rather than learning computer skills, especially in the case of financial instruments.
Despite all the writing and the research, America’s health care industry continues to fail at providing health care that is accessible and affordable, with measurable quality. The fundamental reason we have failed is that health care is not only a complex business, but the most complex in our economy. Other industries are disrupted, some readily adapt to new markets; some leverage information technology and innovative and cost-saving ways. But to date, health care has resisted. The customary approaches tried in other industries seem not to apply to health care. Why? Why is the health care industry so politically divisive? Why is the quality of health care services so difficult to measure? Why do patients often fail to understand their own health care? Why are security and privacy such unique challenges in health care? Why is the payment process for health care services so complicated and challenging? This book seeks to answer these questions. This book written by a well know industry ‘insider’ with 35+ years working at senior levels in hospital operations and information technology, discusses nine major factors that in combination contribute to health care’s complexity. The author concludes that until we understand why health is so complex, we will continue to see books complaining about the poor state of health care in the U.S., and proposals for change that are generally unsuccessful, and innovative technology products that fail to deliver expected results.
Business in the Contemporary Legal Environment is a well-written, comprehensive coursebook providing complete coverage of the areas typically included in a one-semester legal environment course. The authors explain various areas of the law in plain English, with an emphasis on the implications and applications of these areas in a business setting. A combination of classic and contemporary cases clearly illustrates how the law is applied. In addition, helpful discussion questions and You Decide questions at the end of each chapter teach students how to identify and analyze legal issues that are frequently encountered in business. Thoughtful pedagogy and well-designed exhibits throughout the book help make the concepts easier to understand. New to the Fourth Edition: New Contemporary cases are included throughout the book, focusing on current and timely issues. Coverage dedicated to diversity and inclusion thoughtfully integrated into the text. Several chapters discuss technology issues including protecting employee passwords (Chapters 12 and 20); punishing computer crimes (Chapter 13); and protecting technology (Chapters 8 and 20). Students are asked to consider the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in several chapters. Part III on Contracts streamlined to make the content even more accessible and teachable. Professors and students will benefit from: Student-friendly introduction to those legal topics most relevant to businesspeople. Effective use of cases. Every chapter begins with a Classic Case, a case from the past that helped to set the precedents for the material covered in the chapter. The authors then conclude each chapter with a Contemporary Case, a recent decision that shows a current application of one of the principles discussed in the chapter. The authors wrote the facts, issues, and holdings, and excerpted the reasons from the court opinion to make the cases more manageable. An Ounce of Prevention strategy boxes discuss situations that frequently occur in a business environment and strategies for handling those situations in a manner that will reduce potential legal problems. You Decide questions, based on current issues in the news, engage students with high-interest and relevant topics. Good balance between court cases and author-written text. Exercises and examples that help students to identify and analyze legal issues that are frequently encountered in business. Helpful exhibits that summarize concepts but don't overwhelm the text. Thoughtful, classroom-tested text written by an experienced author team. Helpful glossary of legal terms
This book, first published in 1986, is a major reference work for the political discussions arising out of the 1985 Congress revisions of US food and farm laws. It covers production, distribution and consumption of food, analyses international as well as domestic problems, and presents new ways forward. Emphasising public policy and programmes, the book has chapters on agricultural production; environmental and resource problems; food marketing; domestic hunger and nutrition; and world hunger and development.
A new report shows that federal policies impede farmers' ability to make fruits and vegetables more widely available and affordable. The report provides policy recommendations to help farmers to grow and distribute fruits and vegetables and emphasizes that many of the recommended changes could be made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture without the need for additional direction from Congress. However, if such policy amendments do not occur, action in the next Farm Bill may be required. The report recommends the government provide crop insurance for fruits and vegetables and disaster assistance coverage equivalent to that provided for farmers who grow non-perishable commodities; explore policy changes enabling farmers participating in the commodity programs to use program acres for planting fruits and vegetables; and encourages farmers, public health leaders and consumer advocates to identify ways to increase demand for fruits and vegetables in order to keep pace with increases in supply.

Barry C. Lynn, one of America's preeminent thinkers, provides the clearest statement yet on the nature and magnitude of the political and economic dangers posed by America’s new monopolies in Liberty from All Masters. "Very few thinkers in recent years have done more to shift the debate in Washington than Barry Lynn." —Franklin Foer Americans are obsessed with liberty, mad about liberty. On any day, we can tune into arguments about how much liberty we need to buy a gun or get an abortion, to marry who we want or adopt the gender we feel. We argue endlessly about liberty from regulation and observation by the state, and proudly rebel against the tyranny of course syllabi and Pandora playlists. Redesign the penny today and the motto would read “You ain’t the boss of me.” Yet Americans are only now awakening to what is perhaps the gravest domestic threat to our liberties in a century—in the form of an extreme and fast-growing concentration of economic power. Monopolists today control almost every corner of the American economy. The result is not only lower wages and higher prices, hence a concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the few. The result is also a stripping away of our liberty to work how and where we want, to launch and grow the businesses we want, to create the communities and families and lives we want. The rise of online monopolists such as Google and Amazon—designed to gather our most intimate secrets and use them to manipulate our personal and group actions—is making the problem only far worse fast. Not only have these giant corporations captured the ability to manage how we share news and ideas with one another, they increasingly enjoy the power to shape how we move and play and speak and think.

This will be an operating expense just like advertising and promotional costs. But once you take care of it, the selling can begin! In this step-by-step guidebook, you will learn the sales techniques that will make people buy; the appropriate pricing to help your items sell; the importance of having stoppers that will generate a crowd; the strategies to beat your yard sale competitors and maximize profits. Written by Enock Lynn Norrbom, who has been generating revenue from yard sales for decades, this guide offers a better understanding of how selling at yard sales can be a serious home-based business that generates income. Move closer to your customers and achieve your objectives as you discover How to Yard Sale.
ESPIONAGE. FRAUD. POLITICS. "This book is one of the most chilling and compelling business stories I've ever read. Lynn Brewer lived the Enron story, and in a deeply personal, yet highly professional way, lets us peek into what can go horribly wrong in a publicly-traded business. There are some great lessons for leadership in this tale." Oren Harari, Author, The Leadership Secrets of Colin Powell "In this incredibly lucid and juicy account of Enron's shenanigans, Lynn Brewer courageously reveals what went on behind the scenes. What she reports will shock the financial press who voted Enron "the most innovative and admired" five years in a row. It will shame research analysts and investors who drove Enron's stock up into the stratosphere - while never being able to explain how Enron made money. Brewer hasn't forgotten the teachers, the small business owners and retirees who lost a bundle when the house of cards came crashing down. She urges us to see Enron not simply as the failure of a few people and institutions. No, it is symptomatic of our win-at-any-cost culture. To prevent future Enrons, we all must look to see how our choices perpetuate this culture, which ultimately, like Enron, is unsustainable." L. J. Rittenhouse, Author, Do Business With People You Tru$t: Balancing Profits and Principles "Lynn Brewer unabashedly exposes the unchecked greed and chicanery operating in the leadership of Enron. Her story clearly reveals how the unethical leadership at Enron led to an unbearable culture of emotional turbulence and fear, drawing everyone into a web of deceit. Readers will get the inside view of one of the country's biggest corporate scandals." Danna Beal, M.Ed., Author, Tragedy in the Workplace: The Longest Running Show in the Country LIES. DECEPTIONS. SCANDAL. ENRON. Confessions of an Enron Executive: A Whistlebower's Story, is Lynn Brewer's gripping account of nearly three years spent with the company that has come to symbolize the worst in corporate greed. Lynn's riveting tale takes you deep into the heart of Enron for a shocking look at both the notorious illicit deals and the unscrupulous people who made them. Having spent time with Enron's water company, trading division, power trading desk, and the broadband unit, coupled with Lynn's background in accounting and law, a scandalous portrait emerges of a company run amok in the name of naked avarice. Fascinating, revelatory, and often times hilarious, Confessions of an Enron Executive: A Whistleblower's Story details the riveting account of her career at Enron, and her decision to blow the whistle to lawyers and the United States Government, long before the world had ever heard of Sherron Watkins.
