Human Hand Function is a multidisciplinary book that reviews the sensory and motor aspects of normal hand function from both neurophysiological and behavioral perspectives. Lynette Jones and Susan Lederman present hand function as a continuum ranging from activities that are essentially sensory in nature to those that have a strong motor component. They delineate four categories of function along this sensorimotor continuum--tactile sensing, active haptic sensing, prehension, and non-prehensile skilled movements--that they use as a framework for analyzing and synthesizing the results from a broad range of studies that have contributed to our understanding of how the normal human hand functions. The book begins with a historical overview of research on the hand and a discussion of the hand's evolutionary development in terms of anatomical structure. The subsequent chapters review the research in each of the four categories along the continuum, covering topics such as the intensive spatial, temporal, and thermal sensitivity of the hand, the role of hand movements in recognizing common objects, the control of reaching and grasping movements, and the organization of keyboard skills. Jones and Lederman also examine how sensory and motor function develops in the hand from birth to old age, and how the nature of the end effector (e.g., a single finger or the whole hand) that is used to interact with the environment influences the types of information obtained and the tasks performed. The narrative provides a source of enlightenment for millions of displaced Africans who lost their identity, and illustrates the fulfillment of prophecies written over 3000 years ago. There are questions about the past that haunt members of Diaspora Africans; some of which are addressed in this journey. Diaspora Africans frustration, bewilderment and lack of comprehension have found many avenues of expression; one of these avenues is destructive anger against self and brother. The Bible has the answers to many questions that haunt Diaspora Africans because the Bible is a history book about African People. The prophet Moses and his wife were Black Africans; this information is found in the Bible, yet is unknown to the masses. Investigation on the characters of scripture will lead to the ancient cities of Mesopotamia/Middle East, and reveal that the early Bible Patriarchs from Mesopotamia, many of their descendants are found in remote villages of African nations and linked to Africans of the Western Diaspora. What is learned from this book, is the result of many years of research, and brings together information from various sources to answer puzzling questions in one concise volume. It represents a foundational guide to those who have been confused about the current dilemma of identity that the African Diaspora finds itself in today, either as observers or as members.

For most Australian Aboriginal people, the impact of colonialism was blunt—dispossession, dislocation, disease, murder, and missionization. In some cases participation was voluntary; in others it was more invidious and involved kidnapping and trade in women. In many cases, the individuals maintained and exercised a degree of personal autonomy and agency within their new circumstances. This book explores some of their lives and adventures by analyzing archival records of maritime industry, captains' logs, ships' records, and the journals of the sailors themselves, among other artifacts. Much of what is known about this period comes from the writings of Herman Melville, and in this book Melville's whaling novels act as a prism through which relations aboard ships are understood. Drawing on both history and literature, Roving Mariners provides a comprehensive history of Australian Aboriginal whaling and sealing.

This area, including the beautiful Los Osos Valley, has been home to artisans, fishermen, and hunters for centuries, and more recently, cattle ranchers and farmers. The town grew haphazardly in fits and starts. Quirky, rebellious, off the beaten path--all apply. People here are happy to be a bit undiscovered and prefer that it stays that way.
