Meredith Lee is one of the most successful women in television. She has a daytime show that has an audience of millions. She seems to have it all. But behind the tirelessly successful facade lies the story of a woman who nearly lost everything. This is the story of a woman who could not keep love in her life. The love of neither her father nor her mother. Who lost the love of her life the first time around, then lost the love of her own child. She could not even find love in herself. This is a story about women, about their sugar and spice, about the deep natural instincts that drive women through whatever society is trying to pin on them at the time. It is also about love, where to look for it and how to hold on to it when it is found.

When one of them nearly kills him, Anna Travis nurses his wounds and bears the brunt of his frustrations, putting her own life and career on hold. But then one of Anna's own cases -- the seemingly motiveless murder of a quiet, studious woman -- turns out to be linked with Langton's, and Anna becomes the gang's next target. As USA Today wrote of La Plante's Above Suspicion, "There is no sugarcoating on this 100-proof police procedural." La Plante's legions of fans will not be disappointed.

Changing schools at 11 or 12+ is a critical, often traumatic event in a pupil’s career. Earlier studies had looked at this transitional stage from the schools’ point of view, in the light of institutional aims and objectives. Originally published in 1984, this richly detailed and readable study looks at it from the pupils’ point of view: it illustrates their perceptions of the transfer, their anxieties and their experiences. The book is the result of a research project, in which children transferring from a typical middle school to a typical comprehensive in a Midlands town were observed over a period of eighteen months. The authors reveal various ways in which children adjust to a large, more complex school organisation, to new forms of discipline and authority, and new demands in school work. They emphasise the significance of teenage culture during this period, and identify an important area of interplay between school culture and sub-culture. They pay special attention to gender identities, and the ways in which these affect pupils’ responses to different subjects in the curriculum. Finally, they consider the theoretical and policy implications of their survey, and make positive recommendations for improving school and classroom practice at both primary and secondary level.
Hello, my name is Lynda Haines Schommer. You are about to read a true accounting titled BY THE GRACE OF GODMy Road to Recovery, of a near-fatal accident I was involved in which changed and saved my life, both physically and spiritually. I invite you to come along with me as I travel back in time, to the memories of a smart, pretty, popular teenage girl who wakes up one day to find her life completely changed, with no recollection of how it happened. When I was 15 years old, I thought I was pretty special. In my Freshman year, I had been on Pom-pom and had a cute boyfriend. What more could I need, right? I had come from a very dysfunctional family and home life, but as far as I was concerned, I had risen above all of that. It never even occurred to me that I should be giving all of the glory to God, for what He had allowed me to become, and to overcome! In the middle of the summer, on July 24, 1986, while riding on the back of my boyfriends moped, we were involved in a collision with a car. I dont remember the accident; God has an incredible way of instantaneously deleting memories of traumatic events from our minds. However, according to witnesses, I flew up and over my boyfriend, hit the car with my head, and hit the ground with my head. I landed on my left wrist, breaking it, and after vomiting, immediately went into a coma. We were rushed to St. Francis hospital in Wichita, KS. My boyfriend suffered a serious concussion, and was in the hospital for three weeks. Though I had internal bleeding, a closed double-head injury and a broken left wrist, I just looked as if I were asleep. I was immediately rushed into surgery, where an exploratory search was preformed on my abdomen, and my head was shaved for an operative inspection. After my brain began swelling, a pressure monitor was inserted to monitor the swelling. I had to be resuscitated twice, at which point a tracheotomy tube was inserted into my throat, as I was unable to breathe on my own. My diagnosis was not good. My family was told that it was as if someone had put my brain into a jar and shook it several times. At one point early on, the doctors told my mother that due to a lack of brain activity, I would most likely be a vegetable if I ever came out of the coma, and she should find a nursing home for me. My mother, being a strong believer in the healing power of Jesus, said Youre just the doctor, youre not God, and refused. As one month became two, my brain activity became stronger. My eyes opened, and I was able to track, that is, to follow people with my eyes when given the command to. I dont remember any of this, technically, I was still in a coma, however my doctors decided that I might benefit from rehabilitation, so I was transferred to St. Joseph Hospital, also in Wichita, KS, which had a more intense rehab program. As I slowly came out of the coma, I was like a 15-year-old baby, and had to learn to do almost everything again, including eating, writing, walking and talking. By the Grace of God, I never did lose the ability to read or spell. Oftentimes, visitors would come into my hospital room at St. Joseph to find me reading the latest issue of Seventeen magazine. After a total hospital stay of approximately four months, I was able to go home. Soon after, and By the Grace of God, I wrote down my memories of my time in the hospital. Compiled with the details of how drastically my life changed after going through such a traumatic event, here is my story... Follow along with me as I recount my painful days in the hospital, my start of high school and the ensuing times there, until finally I find the peace that surpasses all understanding, with the realization that I am who I am only By the Grace of God. I hope that BY THE GRACE OF GODMy Road to Recovery means as much to you as it does to me.
Lynda had to learn a lot of things the hard way, though she really did try to live life the right way. Or at least what she believed to be the right way. But God had a lesson for her to learn. He was not to be kept in the religious box she wanted to keep Him in. And He wanted her to love Him no matter what happened in her life. But living in the world we live in made it most challenging by the obstacles set before her. She was just a simple country girl, wanting to live a simple country life. Wanting to live what she thought was a normal life, whatever that is. Instead, God brought her to places that she never dreamed were ever possible for her to go and do. And along the way, life was very difficult, but she escaped many attacks from the enemy. Several women are still in a situation like she was. Others have been severely hurt or killed. Lynda’s hope is that others will learn from the mistakes that she made, and also that they will know there is hope to be able to leave and have a better life.

Since 1952, when Eisenhower's media consultants decided they could warm up the General's personality and overcome selective exposure by using short spots on television, advertising has played a major role in American presidential campaigns. By the late 1990s, candidates and their political parties spend hundreds of millions on TV ads. Political spots have become the dominant form of communication between voters and candidates. Kaid and Johnston report the results of a systematic and thorough analysis of virtually all of the political commercials used in general election campaigns from 1952 through the 1996 presidential contest. Important to scholars, students, and other researchers involved with political communications, mass communications, and presidential elections.
Collected from the strip Ernie Pook’s Comeek, which was serialized in alternative weeklies across the continent, My Perfect Life captures the moment when Lynda Barry finds the perfect balance in longer-form storytelling between the bellyaching laughs and the brutal reality checks. Along with the 2022 release Come Over Come Over, this collection continues to spotlight the life of teenager Maybonne Mullen. She suffers through the utterly relatable insults of junior high and the excruciating embarrassment caused by her little sister, Marlys. Hovering in the background, however, is a broken home, parents struggling with addiction, a grandmother who takes her granddaughters from the diverse big city to a bewilderingly bland small town. Yet fitting into the new school and surroundings is, of course, paramount to a young teenager. Maybonne begins September full of life and excitement. As the school year progresses, she experiences bullying, her first boyfriend, family drama, drinking, and more. The book ends with Maybonne withdrawn and jaded as the reality of her world outweighs the magic.

The most influential web design book ever written, completely updated to cover motion graphics, broadband interactive design, and more. Since it was first published in 1995, designing web graphics has been the seminal resource for web designers to learn the basics and then the nuances of solid design for the web. Lynda Weinman has been updating the book to reflect changes in the technologies affecting web design, but dwg.4 has been largely rewritten from the ground up. Included is coverage of motion graphics made possible by the Flash phenomenon, broadband-enabled graphics issues, usability, and more. Lynda is rewriting the book so that all coverage of specific tools is focused on the essential functionality of these programs (Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash, etc.) and not on version-specific attributes of the software, making the book relevant longer for more users.
The ways in which gender is central to the occurrence, detection and prevention of elder abuse are analyzed in this volume. Drawing on their own research, the authors identify the gendered nature of elder abuse in the following areas: most of the very elderly victims are women; in both domestic and institutional settings, women abuse women; a significant number of older women are abused by their sons; a significant number of older men are abused by their female partners and daughters; and abuse by nonrelatives and noncarers of both sexes occurs. Gender Issues in Elder Abuse considers why much of the research on elder abuse has failed to engage with these facts. The authors call for a reframing of the issue of elder abuse, specifically in professional guidelines for dealing with abuse, which they insist, should include gender awareness. They argue for elder abuse to be considered as a human rights issue rather than a private problem.
