Feathers are amazing structures unique to birds and, for a variety of reasons, they need to be renewed periodically as a whole in a process called moult. Every moult determines a bird's appearance anew, and restores plumage efficacy for flight and insulation. Moult profoundly affects physiology and the organization of the annual cycle, and it constrains reproduction and migration. Given these major impacts, which are equal to the other annual challenges of reproduction and migration, it is surprising that research on moult has largely been so neglected a subject. Lukas Jenni and Raffael Winkler have brought together the widely scattered results of studies on the processes and consequences of moult in birds. This book opens with an overview of the functions of plumage, and of feather maintenance and feather wear, and then introduces the two functions of moult: replacement of worn feathers and adjustment of plumage characteristics and appearance. The body of the book then examines feather-growth and the physiology, energetics and control of moult, and how various other physiological processes interact with moult and may compensate for its costs. Significantly, the authors explain how variations in moult and feather quality affect a bird's overall plumage quality, and they highlight the resulting consequences in terms of physical performance, appearance and signalling. Finally, there is a review of all the various solutions that birds have developed to fit moult into the annual cycle. This long-awaited book covers for the first time all aspects of the biology of moult and fills an important gap in the literature, completing our understanding of how the most important annual events in a bird's life fit together into a coherent whole. It will become clear that it uses a lot of different approaches in order to reach out to its surrounding community and to offer a beneficial and also entertaining educational program. Furthermore, it will be shown that, in order to interact in the best possible way, the Toonseum itself moves away from being a classical type of an art museum and transforms itself into a more hybrid version of museum that combines different cultural institutions in order to fulfill its mission in the best way. The Toonseum is part of the rich museum landscape in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is an independent art museum located in the Downtown of Pittsburgh, which is dedicated to the pop culture of comics and cartoons. Established in 2007 it is one of only a handful of museums which deal with comics and cartoons in the whole United States, together with the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco, the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art in New York and the Schulz Museum. It is an independent non-profit organization that is mainly volunteer run. In comparison to other museums the Toonseum is of a smaller nature. Nevertheless on average there are 100 pieces exhibited all the time. The exhibitions rotate every month in order to provide a variety of content for visitors. At the beginning the Toonseum was designed to be a partner institution of the Pittsburgh Children ́s museum before it became an independent institution and moved to Pittsburgh ́s Cultural District in 2009. It was founded by Joe Woe, a cartoonist and storyteller who also worked for the Children ́s museum and who provided a lot of the objects for the museum from his own private collection in the first months.

Designed by an anonymous creator, Bitcoin is an intriguing and revolutionary modern technology and payment transaction infrastructure. But as with any new technology, there are many obstacles and threats on the path towards mainstream acceptance. What are the shortcomings of the Bitcoin protocol and Bitcoin as a currency? Moreover, which competitors may one day be able to surpass Bitcoin and make it obsolete? Could a suitable competitor replace Bitcoin, or will the open source virtual currency keep improving itself to make competition obsolete? Traditional classifications for currencies do not adequately apply to Bitcoin. It is a new type of financial technology that entered the global market in 2008 and has since been able to draw the attention of investors, business leaders, regulators and politicians. Whereas a Dollar, Yen, Yuan or Euro can be hold like a currency, they cannot be secured and transacted simply by itself. Individuals have to rely on third party intermediaries in order to transfer funds for them and in order to store them securely. Contrary to that, one cannot focus on Bitcoin as a currency without acknowledging that it is also a transaction system in itself and would not be able to function is one part of this duality is gone. In fact it is even more precise to look at Bitcoin as a decentralized transaction and financial services system, with a currency function being only one aspect of the technology. Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: In the present master thesis shall be analysed hidden effects ensuing from approaches on Conditionality intended at the Bretton Woods Conference to be used by IMF and World Bank, as well of those that were finally executed by them. The main focus in this research lies on the altering management of that what is interpreted as Conditionality by these institutions, namely a barter of economic policy adaptations against complementary lending. In order to comprehend the accompanying implications behind, this view will be enriched of new aspects: The first chapter highlights selected analogies to a related concept used widely within positivistic civil law, revealing, next to an even-handed functioning of the basic mechanism, also a concentration of institutional roles that would not be permissible on national level. The second analysis introduces to the historical background of the Bretton Woods Conference and evaluates according proposals concerning Conditionality. In the following there are taken into consideration global political evolvements too that opened the door towards ulterior fields of appliance, of whom development resulted being the most fertile one. This leads directly to the elaboration of the two basic strategies followed by the Bretton Woods Institutions in order to leverage their restricted financial capabilities. Finally conclusions are drawn about the role that Conditionality plays within the value-creating chain of an international financial institution, whose outputs, like those of IMF and World Bank, are interpreted in terms of global public goods. The missing link between Conditionality and GPGs is bridged through the introduction of the Conditionality-GPG-Profile that allows the obtainment of a respective profile of Conditionality-bound institutional efforts.
