Designed as a survey and focused on key examples and movements arranged chronologically from 1903 to 2003, this is the first comprehensive history of modern architecture in Latin America in any language. Runner-up, University Co-op Robert W. Hamilton Book Award, 2015 Modern Architecture in Latin America: Art, Technology, and Utopia is an introductory text on the issues, polemics, and works that represent the complex processes of political, economic, and cultural modernization in the twentieth century. The number and types of projects varied greatly from country to country, but, as a whole, the region produced a significant body of architecture that has never before been presented in a single volume in any language. Modern Architecture in Latin America is the first comprehensive history of this important production. Designed as a survey and focused on key examples/paradigms arranged chronologically from 1903 to 2003, this volume covers a myriad of countries; historical, social, and political conditions; and projects/developments that range from small houses to urban plans to architectural movements. The book is structured so that it can be read in a variety of ways—as a historically developed narrative of modern architecture in Latin America, as a country-specific chronology, or as a treatment of traditions centered on issues of art, technology, or utopia. This structure allows readers to see the development of multiple and parallel branches/historical strands of architecture and, at times, their interconnections across countries. The authors provide a critical evaluation of the movements presented in relationship to their overall goals and architectural transformations.
This book demonstrates that Latin American liberation theology continues to produce substantial biblical exegesis, absorbing theological reflection, and a sharp social critique that enhances the worldwide church. In Jesus Goes to McDonald's, Rossi asserts that the book of Job protests against the devastating effects of imperial Persian rule in postexilic Judah--effects seen as the stimulus for the theology of reward so severely criticized by Job. Not since Gustavo Gutierrez's On Job has there been such a compelling reading of the book of Job as a literary mirror of oppressive socioeconomic and political conditions. Rossi uses Job to offer a critique of the prosperity theology that is so dominant in parts of the church today. The second half of the book offers a radical critique of "the McDonaldization" of society and church. Free market capitalism has become an all-embracing worldview to the detriment of society and church. As counter-speech, Rossi proposes a theology that favors life, a life in which solidarity with the poor is central.
In this first English-language edition of a book that has seen thirteen printings in Brazil, Dr. Bresser Pereira analyzes Brazil's economy and politics from 1930, when the Brazilian industrial revolution began, up to July 1983. First addressing the period of strong development in Brazil between 1930 and 1961, he discusses at length the import-substitution model of industrialization; the emergence of new classes—industrialists, industrial workers, and especially the new technobureaucratic middle classes; the conflict between the traditional agrarian ideologies of coffee planters and the nationalistic and industrializing ideologies of the new classes; and the new realities of the 1950s that led to the crisis of the populist alliance between the industrial bourgeoisie and the workers. Next he explores the economic and political crisis of the sixties, centering on the Revolution of 1964, when an industrialized and fully capitalist— but still underdeveloped—Brazil experienced the cyclical movements of capitalism. The final chapters of the book examine the Brazilian "miracle" of 1967-1973, the economic slowdown of the 1970s that culminated in the severe recession of 1981, the dialectics between the process of abertura led by the military regime established in 1964 and the redemocratization process demanded by civil society, and the "total crisis of 1983.

When a poor native farm boy named Victor Gomez is suddenly orphaned and adopted by one of the most influential families in his hometown, he meets and falls for Sarita Rodriguez—a supermodel and media empire heiress—just before Fidel Castro overthrows President Fulgencio Batista and takes control of the island. After Castro raids Victor's new family's estate and imprisons his father, Victor narrowly escapes and flees to the US where he accepts an unconventional, deadly deal as a spy to save his country. Still just a teen, Victor finds himself in a cycle of betrayal—struggling to find truth and purpose, while torn between protecting his now powerless parents, finding his disbanded biological siblings, and secretly pursuing Sarita as she rises to international fame from New York. Based on the true story of the author's family, Isla Vulnerable weaves a captivating tale of love, sacrifice, and human resilience in the face of extraordinary historical events—including the Cold War, the Cuban missile crisis, the CIA's covert operations in foreign affairs, Operation Mongoose, and the assassination of JFK. A dynamic cast of real-life-inspired characters, meticulous attention to historical detail, edge-of-your-seat spy scenes, and a love story that transcends social classes compose an ideologically-unbiased, heartwarming, and cinematic journey in this author's first published book.
(2nd paperback edition, 2013) "This text is a real first in its chosen subject matter, to which later works will always make reference" (Dr. Nicholas Ford, author [with David Brown] of "Surfing and Social Theory: the experience, embodiment and narrative of the dream glide," Routledge, 2006). This work is an academic analysis on the pedagogy of surfing, conducted by a team of researchers linked to the Motor Behavior and Biomechanics Laboratory at the Rio de Janeiro State University. Academic literature in the theme of surfing and physical education has been reviewed in order to provide surfing instructors with a scientific rationale to enable students with an oriented consciousness mastering in the practice of the sport. At this very moment our main concern relates to the results of our research, which to us indicate that the pedagogical approach currently adopted worldwide in the teaching of the sport seems to be leading apprentices to certain critical misconceptions in terms of the main maritime hazards and safety limits involved in the process of acquainting with the surf environment. Up to now we have been unable to find, neither in Brazil nor internationally, technical-scientific works addressing the pedagogy of surfing which may have been published in the form of books. References to our study include scientific publications on sports pedagogy, didactics, motor learning, sports physiology, sports training, anatomy, biomechanics, social imaginary, oceanography, marine biology and military training, besides a few journalistic, artistic, literary works focusing on the sport of surfing. Our project was primarily designed as a means for theoretical and practical referencing to professionals who work in the teaching of surfing (physical education teachers/students and surfing instructors in general), in that its Portuguese edition also aims to elicit the instrumentalization of surfing in behalf of the Rio de Janeiro State Military Fire Brigade on its Maritime Rescuing Basic Training. Our methodological structure dismisses direct physical/inappropriate verbal assistance in the teaching process; alternatively, we present strategies and means to elicit the state of nature as the main index to ensure individual restrictions to be respected, and the most appropriate formal precise pedagogical actions to be identified with regard to the maximization of the overall efficacy and efficiency on the pedagogical process. Brief presentation of the authors: (1) Bruno Ferreira Alves Castello da Costa -> Industrial Engineer by the Rio de Janeiro Federal University, Physical Education Teacher by the Rio de Janeiro State University; (2) Gabriel Gueiros Nunes -> Physical Education Teacher by the Rio de Janeiro State University; (3) Rafael Barçante Ladvocat Cintra -> Physical Education Teacher by the Rio de Janeiro State University; (4) Luiz Alberto Batista -> Physical Education Teacher by the Rio de Janeiro State University, Master of Science in Education by the Rio de Janeiro Fluminense Federal University and Doctor of Philosophy in Sports Sciences by the Porto University (Portugal). LANGUAGE ADVISORY: This book has been written by Brazilian Portuguese native speakers who have strived to develop a decent English version moved by the belief it becomes paramount, at this time, to facilitate the dissemination of our hypothesis also to non-Portuguese speakers, in a pursuit to alert as many Physical Education professionals and surfing enthusiasts as possible of a few significant maritime safety risks we have found to be involved in the current state of the art in the pedagogy of surfing - proofreading suggestions, as well as customer reviews, are welcome.
