Luis de Molina was a leading figure in the remarkable sixteenth-century revival of Scholasticism on the Iberian peninsula. Molina is best known for his innovative theory of middle knowledge. In his monumental On Justice and Rights, the Jesuit Luis de Molina (1535-1600) discussed the legal and ethical aspects of the Portuguese trade in African and Asian enslaved persons. Molina surveys, develops, and problematizes the criteria necessary for the legitimate possession, sale, and purchase of human freedom. He insists that, even under legally valid slavery, persons who have sold or lost their freedom have inalienable rights as human beings, such as the freedom to make contracts, to marry, and even, under certain circumstances, to sue their owners in court. Molina also devotes attention to the ways in which slavery could be ended and whether and under what circumstances slaves had the right to escape from their owners. Well informed about the political structures and customs of many peoples in Africa, as well as Japan, China, and India, Molina paints a vivid and detailed picture of Portuguese trade. He gives specific accounts of the origins and development of the slave trade, region by region, and of the nature of the relationship between local rulers and the Portuguese kingdom. In doing so, he carefully describes the deception, coercion, and general indifference that pervades this trade regarding the rights to freedom of these people. It also attempts to identify the political, ecclesiastical, and market agents involved in this great injustice and their varying degrees of culpability. While Molina does not condemn slavery as a legal institution, the deeply flawed and even immoral behavior of sellers, buyers, regulators, and political rulers both in Portugal and in the slave-supplying regions that Molina denounces casts a heavy shadow on the morality of the trade.

On July 21, 1578, the Mexican town of Tecamachalco awoke to news of a scandal. A doll-like effigy hung from the door of the town's church. Its two-faced head had black chicken feathers instead of hair. Each mouth had a tongue sewn onto it, one with a forked end, the other with a gag tied around it. Signs and symbols adorned the effigy, including a sambenito, the garment that the Inquisition imposed on heretics. Below the effigy lay a pile of firewood. Taken together, the effigy, signs, and symbols conveyed a deadly message: the victim of the scandal was a Jew who should burn at the stake. Over the course of four years, inquisitors conducted nine trials and interrogated dozens of witnesses, whose testimonials revealed a vivid portrait of friendship, love, hatred, and the power of rumor in a Mexican colonial town. A story of dishonor and revenge, Death by Effigy also reveals the power of the Inquisition's symbols, their susceptibility to theft and misuse, and the terrible consequences of doing so in the New World. Recently established and anxious to assert its authority, the Mexican Inquisition relentlessly pursued the perpetrators. Lying, forgery, defamation, rape, theft, and physical aggression did not concern the Inquisition as much as the misuse of the Holy Office's name, whose political mission required defending its symbols. Sin embargo, el Espritu de la Letra de cada poema, s encarna un fuerte testimonio que demuestra que los presos polticos cubanos jams perdieron su condicin de seres humanos con todos sus valores ticos de familia, de fraternidad, de solidaridad, de humanismo, de libertad,... a pesar de los horrores dantescos a que eran sometidos (y continan sometiendo a los presos actuales) por parte del Comunismo, de Fidel y de Ral Castro dentro del trance de la implantacin del marxismo-leninismo en Cuba y la conversin de sta en Colonia de Rusia, lo que conllevaba la imposicin, en las crceles cubanas, del salvaje y barbrico y pulverizante Sistema Penitenciario Ruso que se basaba en la aniquilacin del Preso medinate un rgimen pseudocientfico de ciclos de experimentos biolgicos, qumicos, dietticos, psicolgicos,... que provocaban enfermedades y hasta la muerte, inasistencia mdica,... amn de torturas fsicas, incomunicacin, aislamiento en hermtica soledumbre, trabajos forzados, golpizas, bayonetenamientos, baleamientos y hasta el asesinato directo,... todo esto diriguido a quebrarle al preso su espritu de resistencia fsica, ideolgica y moral y desajustarlo psquicamente, embrutecerlo, enajenarlo, despersonalizalo -y tratar de adoctrinarlo de ser posible- para, convertido en una Cosa y Cosificado, anularlo para siempre. Sin embargo, Quimera no da testimonios de ese socipata rgimen penitenciario; pero cada uno de sus poemas s da testimonio de que el preso, en pleno infierno, se expresaba con un Lenguaje libre de los efectos demoledores de la Prisin Comunista, los que no lograban daarle la Conciencia, por lo que su Poesa poda brotar sin la influencia deprimente de las torturas, sin plaidos, amarguras, resentimientos, odio, revanchismo... Quimera es un Canto a la Vida, al Amor a la Familia, a la Fe en Dios, a la Filosofa, a la Idiosincrasia y Cultura del Cubano, a las Remembranzas, a las Quimeras del Hombre en su Privacin... Y Quimera es temtica, porque mantiene la lnea expresada de principio a fin. Leda Quimera, el Lector podra decir que Quimera es, de por s, un inequvoco Testimonio de que, en todo tiempo y lugar, el Ser Humano posee la capacidad y fortleza sobradas para no sucumbir y mantener inclume sus sentimientos a pesar de las circunstancias.
