This book focuses on Kant’s analysis of three issues crucial for contemporary politics. Starting from a new reading of Kant’s account of our innate right to freedom, it highlights how a Kantian foundation of human rights, properly understood and modified where necessary, appears more promising than the foundational arguments currently offered by philosophers. It then compares Kant’s model for peace with the apparently similar model of democratic peace to show that the two are profoundly different in content and in quality. The book concludes in analysis of Kant’s controversial view of history to rescue it from the idea that his belief in progress is at best over-optimistic and at worst dogmatic. Also long travelling has become cheap because of elibus, a nuclear-engined helicopter used as mass transport. Yet mankind is under the terrible menace of international terrorism launched by an obscure and powerful personage called the Great Drake, Dà Lóng in Chinese. No one can understand his perfect plan that succeeds to get the NATO alliance and Russia fighting against each other by nuclear weapons. Governments are compelled to flee and abandon their people. In a disaster of biblical dimension, three teachers and their students try to save themselves while being in school trip abroad. On the road they meet secret agents who give them a mission. Yet they would be lost, like many others, without the unexpected arrival of mysterious people coming from space. They are descendants of the team of a spaceship lost in voyage around Jupiter centuries ago. They have an advanced technology, but is it enough to defeat Dà Lóng, who has by now conquered almost the whole world except some USA states? In the last frontier of America, a pool of heroes goes into action against the Drake. It is the eternal conflict between the power of big money, corruption, ruthless actions, and the heroism of generous people.

This book is the result of a research project designed and carried out at the Department of Architecture, University of Florence. This book discusses urban public spaces and, more specifically, run-down, inactive micro-spaces that are barely used due to their location, dimensions, morphology or semantic characteristics. In literature, these spaces are often defined as “residual urban spaces.” A large abandoned industrial area on the outskirts of a town or a small interstitial space in a historical centre can be residual. With respect to such a broad subject matter, the book seeks to radically limit the field, concentrating on public residual spaces found in the oldest parts of cities. The book reflects on this theme and introduces a method for reading and assessment of the residuality of public spaces in historical contexts (Residuality Assessment Process) which was tested in the historical centre of Florence. It is the authors’ view that residual spaces, above all if designed according to a system logic, can go from being problems to potential activators of urban and social regeneration processes, offering a useful contribution to improve city life.
