The Ethereal Aether is a historical narrative of one of the great experiments in modern physical science. The fame of the 1887 Michelson-Morley aether-drift test on the relative motion of the earth and the luminiferous aether derives largely from the role it is popularly supposed to have played in the origins, and later in the justification, of Albert Einstein’s first theory of relativity; its importance is its own. As a case history of the intermittent performance of an experiment in physical optics from 1880 to 1930 and of the men whose work it was, this study describes chronologically the conception, experimental design, first trials, repetitions, influence on physical theory, and eventual climax of the optical experiment. Michelson, Morley, and their colleague Miller were the prime actors in this half-century drama of confrontation between experimental and theoretical physics. The issue concerned the relative motion of “Spaceship Earth” and the Universe, as measured against the background of a luminiferous medium supposedly filling all interstellar space. At stake, it seemed, were the phenomena of astronomical aberration, the wave theory of light, and the Newtonian concepts of absolute space and time. James Clerk Maxwell’s suggestion for a test of his electromagnetic theory was translated by Michelson into an experimental design in 1881, redesigned and reaffirmed as a null result with Morley in 1887, thereafter modified and partially repeated by Morley and Miller, finally completed in 1926 by Miller alone, then by Michelson’s team again in the late 1920s. Meanwhile Helmholtz, Kelvin, Rayleigh, FitzGerald, Lodge, Larmor, Lorentz, and Poincaré—most of the great names in theoretical physics at the turn of the twentieth century—had wrestled with the anomaly presented by Michelson’s experiment. As the relativity and quantum theories matured, wave-particle duality was accepted by a new generation of physicists. The aether-drift tests disproved the old and verified the new theories of light and electromagnetism. By 1930 they seemed to explain Einstein, relativity, and space-time. But in historical fact, the aether died only with its believers.

A fundamental communications model is presented illustrating some of the simplicities and some of the complexities associated with communicating. However, the book proceeds to make two-way communicating quite simple between the reader and God. This simplicity is achieved by identifying, defining, and elaborating on terms relevant to good communications. The reader asks: "Who am I?", and an answer is provided. This is followed by an introduction to God, followed by an introduction to Jesus Christ, The Holy Spirit, The Holy Trinity, and love. With this background, the reader communicates with God, and God communicates with the reader. Who is god? informs the reader as to how God communicates with the reader; how the reader communicates with God; some of Gods messages to the reader; some of the reader's messages to God; and finally the reader's conclusions after knowing himself or herself and God better. The profound impacts of Who is god? on the reader are: 1) recognition of the true God, God of the Holy Bible; 2) realization that God has established the ultimate communication model; and 3) realization that this type of relationship with God is both: a) the source of peace and joy, and b) the solution to terrorism, crime, addiction, prejudice, and deprivation.

In time lapse form, this diary relates facts, feelings, and often emotions in a way that one might hear from a close friend or relative over the phone, in a letter, or on a postcard. It may have multiple entries in a day, days in a row, or a week or two with nothing. Then, like with a best friend for life, the entries just pick up as though no span of time in the conversation has passed. It looks back, paints the present, and hints at the future through imagination. About the Author J.M. Loyd is just a guy from Arkansas who grew up in a small town in the central part of the state. A town with three colleges and a fine ditch. I split my young time between them. I was fortunate to attend school at the teacher’s college from nursery school through the fifth grade. It was quite an experience to be the guinea pig for the aspiring teachers standing in the hall behind the two-way mirrors. I swam on championship teams for high school and two of the colleges. Achieved first chair trumpet in the school band, was a member of three rock bands, lead singer in two. Stage actor, set designer and finder. I met my wife and put all of that away for our family. We worked together daily and raised our son. We married for keeps. We had stores in the footwear and fashion industry and helped her family run the summer camp for children at our homeplace. I was named “Captain”. The name stuck. I led adventures groups, was the camp deejay, announcer, song leader and counsellor. I am a licensed pilot, HAM, scuba diver, sailor, boater, builder, biker, herpetologist, gardener, fisherman, weatherman, salesman, locksmith, musician and lifeguard, mostly retired. But, most importantly, a late in life Grandpa, with a lot to share.
