Despite rapidly decreasing rates of population growth caused by reduced fertility in the majority of world regions, demographers are predicting that the world's population will still double by the year 2050. The question is therefore no longer the traditional one of whether the planet can support so many people, but how to provide a sustainable future for ten billion individuals. Quantitative problems have become ethical ones. Coping with Population Challenges addresses these issues in the context of international debate and agreements since the first World Population Plan of Action in 1974 to the 20-year Programme of Action adopted at the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo in 1994. The author describes how the Programme of Action focalizes on women's issues, reproductive choice and the notion of the individual. However, she identifies a number of important but neglected areas of the debate that the Programme failed to address and brings to light some of the inconsistencies that need to be resolved if the Programme is to be implemented. The author also looks at the underlying ethical dimension of all choices relating to the population issue and suggests measures and machinery for giving effect to states' commitments, including reformulating problems and defining the appropriate economic framework for solutions. In 2022, how are women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) faring? The Manifesto about Women in STEM is a collection of 50 texts that speak to the population at large. It brings together the thoughts of several authors, including individuals (both women and men) and groups from the school, university and private sector realms, who work with women in STEM in French-speaking Canada. This Manifesto is intended to be positive and impactful, even if work still remains to be done to achieve equity and equality. Several important issues are still current, such as workfamily balance and motherhood without penalty. Issues such as intersectionality, EDI (equity, diversity and inclusion) and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women in STEM are also explored. There are texts that address the intersection of STEM and each of health, the arts, education and philosophy. Others deal with women who experience multiple forms of discrimination, for example Indigenous women and non-heterosexual women in STEM. Pioneers relate their obstacle-ridden but fulfilling journeys. Seven recommendations are proposed for a society looking to achieve equity, diversity and inclusion of women in STEM in an intersectional perspective.

Recent evidence has shown many ways in which our bodies and the environment influence cognition. In this Research Topic we aim to develop our understanding of cognition by considering the diverse and dynamic relationship between the language we use, our bodily perceptions, and our actions and interactions in the broader environment. There are already many empirical effects illustrating the continuity of mind- body-environment: manipulating body posture influences diverse areas such as mood, hormonal responses, and perception of risk; directing attention to a particular sensory modality can affect language processing, signal detection, and memory performance; placing implicit cues in the environment can impact upon social behaviours, moral judgements, and economic decision making. This Research Topic includes papers that explore the question of how our bodies and the environment influence cognition, such as how we mentally represent the world around us, understand language, reason about abstract concepts, make judgements and decisions, and interact with objects and other people. Contributions focus on empirical, theoretical, methodological or modelling issues as well as opinion pieces or contrasting perspectives. Topic areas include, perception and action, social cognition, emotion, language processing, modality-specific representations, spatial representations, gesture, atypical embodiment, perceptual simulation, cognitive modelling and perspectives on the future of embodiment.
