Whilst individual volunteering may be of immediate benefit to individual patients, this intervention may have detrimental effects on local health systems; distorting labour markets, accentuating dependencies and creating opportunities for corruption. Improved volunteer deployment may avoid these risks and present opportunities for sustainable systems change. The empirical research presented in this book stems from a specific volunteering intervention funded by the Tropical Health Education Trust and focused on improving maternal and newborn health in Uganda. However, important opportunities exist for policy transfer to other contexts.
Read the series that inspired Three Pines on Prime Video. From the #1 New York Times bestseller Louise Penny comes the second Armand Gamache mystery set in the stunning countryside of Quebec. Winner of the 2007 Agatha Award for Best Novel! Welcome to winter in Three Pines, a picturesque village in Quebec, where the villagers are preparing for a traditional country Christmas, and someone is preparing for murder. No one liked CC de Poitiers. Not her quiet husband, not her spineless lover, not her pathetic daughter—and certainly none of the residents of Three Pines. CC de Poitiers managed to alienate everyone, right up until the moment of her death. When Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, of the Sûreté du Quebec, is called to investigate, he quickly realizes he's dealing with someone quite extraordinary. CC de Poitiers was electrocuted in the middle of a frozen lake, in front of the entire village, as she watched the annual curling tournament. And yet no one saw anything. Who could have been insane enough to try such a macabre method of murder—or brilliant enough to succeed? With his trademark compassion and courage, Gamache digs beneath the idyllic surface of village life to find the dangerous secrets long buried there. For a Quebec winter is not only staggeringly beautiful but deadly, and the people of Three Pines know better than to reveal too much of themselves. But other dangers are becoming clear to Gamache. As a bitter wind blows into the village, something even more chilling is coming for Gamache himself.

Once again my way to writing that great novel (it is started, and developing) I keep getting stalled in the land of food. The very staple of our existence. After the completion of the Great Canadian Chicken and Of Borscht and Beyond. I ran into a Bean and here is its story. In the land of great personal loves, next to the Arts and Creative Writing, I spend most of my Saturdays plotting the menus for the upcoming week for the household. When my Goddaughter told me of her very productive green bean crop, my mind went back into a time when I had gardens, and one of the MOST prolific crops was indeed the green bean. Phaseolus vulgaris , Translated probably means, Beans what Grow with great vigor At least that is how I see it. So, on the Saturdays of menus I began to explore some of many ways there are so serve, enjoy and be nourished by this humble little green tube like vegetable, a relative of the Caragana bush we saw edging our yards on the Canadian Prairies, I believe. I was amazed how very good it was, not only eat, but was also good for we humans. There seems to be a never ending trail of ways to serve the bean with likely dozens more I have not yet found. Do enjoy and try some of our culinary treasures. Bean up !

A Dutch oven is an iconic piece of kitchenware, highly prized by all cooks from beginners to professionals. A thick-walled, seasoned cast-iron cooking pot, as to why it's called a Dutch oven, no one knows for sure. The most popular theory is that the 17th century Dutch were the first to use clay moulds in favour of casting metal in sand, and this enabled smoother finishes for iron cookware. Regardless of its origins, by the 1920s, a well-known French brand (now synonymous with this lidded casserole) was supplying them to French restaurants specifically for cooking their most popular dish, coq au vin. As a Dutch oven can be a costly investment piece, how do you make sure that you put yours hard to work? Easy – with this collection of 60 tried-and-tested recipes you can impress with well-known classics from Beef Bourguignon and Slow-cooked Greek Lamb to One-pot Spanish Seafood Stew. But what you can cook in a Dutch oven is not limited to these familiar dishes – you can also prepare home-cooked comforts ranging from Cajun Chicken Gumbo, Mac 'n' Cheese, Short Ribs, Carnitas (Mexican Pulled Pork) and Spinach & Cheese Strata, plus discover exciting new recipes to expand your repertoire, including Kale & Squash Lasagne and Sriracha- braised Brisket and even a loaf of Dutch Oven Bread!

And one person has made it her career to help these Amex-wielding shoppers create the perfect look. Bonnie Salerno Madden knows all of her client’s preferences, whims, and fantasies. But while Bonnie is all elegance on the outside, she’s barely keeping it together on the inside. A single mom to a special needs child, she needs her high-pressure job to care for her family. And when that job is put in jeopardy, Bonnie will need to make some of the riskiest choices of her life to guarantee a better future for her son, and for herself. With the opportunity to live in her own fairy tale, will Bonnie have what it takes to make the trade off? “THE TRADE OFF is a riveting page-turner even for a non-shopper like me. For anyone planning a dream golfing vacation to Ireland, Trolleys and Squibs is the most comprehensive guidebook in the market. Frustrated by sketchy guidebooks while on a golfing tour, authors Louise and Rick Miracle decided to compile their own definitive guide to Irish links. In addition to its practical travel tips, this book offers insightful essays -- including several by leading figures in Irish golf -- that explain the history and particular character of golfing in Ireland. Vacation planners will especially love the book's extensive, geographically balanced coverage of individual golf courses, presented by way of two whimsically named lists. The Trolleys List contains thorough summaries of 153 courses, including small maps and directions for getting there, scorecard data, descriptions of each course's layout and club facilities, and recommendations on local restaurants and hotels. With Trolleys and Squibs, you can plan a detailed itinerary and make your reservations, even before landing on Irish shores (though armchair travelers as well will gain immense enjoyment from the colorful portraits of the courses and countryside).

Chachi: is not a taxi. It is something that feels; and emotes . . . New Delhi: A melting pot. A crucible of people, cultures, lifestyles. Home to the politicians that lead this country. And to the taxiwallahs that more often than not charge a hundred per cent extra than the legitimate fare. U.P.: The badlands. Notorious for dacoits, land usurpation; and other misdeeds. This is the New Delhi and U.P that we travel through with the most lovable of all symbols associated with the city – the Ambassador car. Travails with Chachi is a ‘Never-before-Seen’ Delhi. It is a Delhi seen through the eyes of the Ambassador taxi – an ubiquitous symbol that for many decades defined Delhi. Plodding through Lutyens’ Delhi on a maximum speed of 40 kmph Chachi (the protagonist of this book) sees all; experiences all; and tells all. The taxi belches; makes offensive noises; and is a tell-tale. And so the characters that Chachi plys on her ample ‘back’seat – dhoti-clad paan-chewing portly politicians indulging in ‘suitcase politics; Ganesh brand beedi chain-smokers; the Nakli Singh Yadavs who only want to induct people into politics – that is already home to bus conductors and convicted dacoits; the belan brandishing Bablu ki Ma; and Mehnath Singh – who is far removed from the name bestowed upon him by his parents that implies ‘hard work’. The lands that Chachi travels through is peppered with those that breathe and abuse concurrently; those that revel and live off name-dropping; the inventors of lyrical slogans - Tilak, tarazu, talwar aur ch****; sab ko maro joota chaar!; and those that make a living - doing nothing. This is New Delhi. This is U.P. This is Chachi’s world.
