This book presents an accounting framework to critically review existing studies of aid's macroeconomic effects and as a basis for four country studies on Guinea-Bissau, Nicaragua, Tanzania and Zambia. This framework focuses on the impact of different types of aid on the level and composition of key macroeconomic aggregates such as imports, investment and government expenditure. The importance of the relationship between aid and policy reform is also stressed. The case studies find that aid has had a generally positive contribution, though recommendations to further improve aid impact are also given.

This book reports the outcomes of a research project which involved developing and implementing a research-informed curriculum for low-attaining further education students. Key aims of the curriculum were to ameliorate some of the social and educational disadvantages faced by the students, and to support secure and sustainable transitions to employment or further education. The book begins by outlining the characteristics of the lowest-attaining young people and considering the challenges they face. Subsequent chapters describe the educational and geographic contexts, the curriculum, and the pedagogical approaches adopted. It moves on to describe the outcomes of the project, drawing on narratives of individual students and staff to illustrate the benefits of a broader curriculum which acknowledges earlier disadvantage. The book concludes with a discussion of how the curriculum could be adapted in different contexts and considers the implications of such change in terms of policy, practice, future research and social justice.
Set at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, this is the story of the orphaned Penry children, forced to flee from the cruel and unjust employment in north west Devon. Janet, the resourceful older daughter, takes charge of Amy and Tom, hiding them from their pursuers, and tending the injuries they have sustained from beatings and abuse. Janet heads for Cornwall, but is slowed by the pain and fever suffered by Tom from a dog bite in his leg. Amy too is suffering from a recent beating. They follow the Northern Coastal path but soon find themselves in danger from footpads who seek money, food and other diversions..... At the end of their endurance they are later rescued by a woman named Meg, who lives alone in an isolated cottage. She restores them to health, and finds them occupation with a distant relative who lives near Tavistock in Devon. They never reach their new home, however, because Jake, the pedlar who is taking them on his cart, stops to camp for the night and while the children are bathing in a nearby brook, is robbed and murdered. Terrified the three are once more on the run. Janet has lost the directions of where they were going. They are lost with nowhere to go. Janet sets her mind again on Cornwall, and after several days of hard walking they arrive at the small village of Indian Queens. Exhausted they stumble on a group of derelict houses deep in woodland. Travelsick and weary they settle in a cottage which is in reasonable repair. It is late summer and Janet gets them all blackberry picking for pies which she sells at the local inn. Later she makes more pies and cakes which she sells at St Austell market. Tom finds work with the charcoal burners, and a degree of security is achieved. Amy, however, always difficult causes more trouble by becoming pregnant by one of the charcoal burners, although only fifteen she is pushed into a hurried marriage. Janet falls in love with Geoffrey, younger son of the Hall, but when he proposes she become his mistress, while he marries another aristocrat, she rebuffs him. Amy has returned to the cottage because her mother-in-law is cruel. She later gives birth to a baby boy. Janet takes on a small shop in St Austell to sell her cakes and pies, but encounters several serious problems until she meets Madselin who becomes her friend and partner and they become successful. Janet meets Matthew, a handsome young vet who falls in love with her and helps with her business, but he has secrets of his own and it takes a nasty accident for Janet to know where her true feelings lie.

GARDEN STATE - Cinematic Space and Choreographic Time is the third issue of the SAC JOURNAL and explores the garden as a utopia wherein time and space may be thought of in archi- tectural terms yet not easily deciphered against architecture's traditions and practices. The garden herein is a changeable and vulnerable condition, embodying the ephemerality of life, which in turn contrasts with the customary expectations of architec- ture's longevity. However, Garden State also engages with the contemporary arts, specifically video, cinema and ballet, and with it time and space open up with new, fragile dimensions. A choreographic framework emerges which is at once more precise yet loose, more responsive yet open, than that space architecture normally engenders. Choreographed movement differs from that prescribed by the calculable paths so often invoked in the spatial syntax of latter-day architecture. The garden emerges as a state, in all its social glory, a realm that we already occupy but perhaps never can own? Made up of three different parts, the Auxiliary Air Force, the Special Reserve and the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, these three separate and different groups have not featured significantly in existing literature. Along with a history of the Territorial Air Force, this book includes an analysis of how the volunteers joined, and what kinds of men were accepted into the organizations as both pilots and officers. The influences class and social status had on recruitment in the run up to the Second World War are also discussed. There is an exploration of the key differences between the Auxiliary squadrons and the SR squadrons, as well as the main reasons for the idea of merging the SR squadrons into the AAF squadrons. Briefly discussed are the newly formed University Air Squadrons that were set up to promote “air mindedness” and to stimulate an interest and research on matters aeronautical. Military voluntarism continued to play a key role in the defense of twentieth-century Britain, and class ceased to be the key determining factor in the recruitment of officers as the organizations faced new challenges. Within both the AAF and the RAFVR the pre-war impression of a gentlemen’s flying club finally gave way to a more meritocratic culture in the post-war world.

How does the contemporary restructuring of health care affect nursing practice? Increasingly since the 1970s, and more intensively under recent reforms, Canadian health care is the focus of information-supported, professionally based management. In Managing to Nurse, Janet M. Rankin and Marie L. Campbell probe the operation of this new form of hospital and its effect management on nurses and nursing. Written from the nurse's perspective, this institutional ethnography discovers a major transformation in the nature of nursing and associated patient care: the work is now organized according to an accounting logic that embeds a cost-orientation into care-related activities. Rankin and Campbell illustrate how nurses adapt to this new reality just as they, themselves, perpetuate it - how they learn to recognize their adaptations as professionally correct and as an adequate basis for nursing judgement. Although Managing to Nurse may contradict contemporary beliefs about health care reform, the insiders' account that it provides is undeniable evidence that nurses' caring work is being undermined and patient care is being eroded, sometimes dangerously, by current health care agendas.

Some happy occasions, like the 1995 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book to Bangladeshi-Australian author Adib Khan, the 2008 Man Booker Prize to Indian born Australian writer Arvinda Adiga, and the 2013 Australian Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Fiction to Sri Lankan-Australian author Michele de Krester, have boosted the self-confidence of South Asian-Australian writers in Australia. South Asian diasporic communities have also been the focus for relatively small, but constantly growing, studies by anthropologists and sociologists on the interrelation of gender, race, ethnicity and migration in Australia. From its starting point within international law, throughout its progression from regional to national law, The Law of Environmental Damage combines the disciplines of environmental law, liability law and insurance in its analysis of the development of reparative environmental law. In the model adopted, three generations of reparative schemes are identified, based on civil liability or administrative liability or self-taken measures from the area of insurance. The analysis applied is based on factors of standard and designation of liability, as well as the definition and assessment of environmental damage. Issues such as environmental lender liability and damage to public natural resources are highlighted. The results of the study are evaluated within the framework of a theory of environmental efficiency; among other factors, the reparative effect of liability rules is discussed.
This book examines the role of compassion in refiguring the university. Plotting a reimagining of the university through care, other-regard, and a commitment to act in response to the suffering of others, the author draws on various humanities disciplines to illuminate the potential of compassion in the campus. The book asks how the sector can reclaim the university from the tides of neoliberalism, inequalities and increased workloads, and which moral principles and competencies would need to be championed and instilled to build inclusive citizenship and positive connection with others.
