The traditional boundary lines within the professional practice of psychology are changing, and major practice issues, such as prescription and hospital admitting privileges for psychologists, need to be expediently and adequately addressed. As many psychologists have come to realize, appropriate pharmacotherapy can be a useful adjunct to psychotherapy. Even professionals who do not use psychotropics in their own practice require at least a minimum degree of knowledge about the effects of these drugs on their patients. For example, a school counselor with an understanding of anticonvulsant drugs or methylphenidate, may be better able to plan an optimal program for learning disabled child who uses these drugs. The Pharmacologic Basis of Psychotherapeutics starts with a brief history (written by guest author Patrick DeLeon) of the movement to obtain prescription privileges for psychologists, including the arguments on both sides of the issue. It then describes the various purported mechanisms by which psychotropic drugs elicit their effects in the human body. The various drugs are introduced, and the processes of absorption, distribution and elimination, as well as the influence of age and disease on these processes are also discussed. Attention is given to the methods of administration, adverse reactions, and drug interactions. Based on the authors' experience in teaching pharmacopsychology, this text reflects their concern that psychologists be provided with a reference source that is both pharmacologically correct and specifically relevant to the expanded professional practice of psychology. Because it assumes no prior knowledge of pharmacotherapy, this book is appropriate for the graduate psychology student or post-graduate psychologist in clinical practice. An Editorial Advisory Committee, comprised of distinguished academics, researchers, and clinical psychologists was established to help ensure that the focus and leveling of the book was appropriately directed to the needs and abilities of both graduate psychology students and psychologists.

Enlightenment thinkers such as Rousseau and Montesquieu are best known for their humanist theories and liberating influence on Western civilization. But as renowned French intellectual Louis Sala-Molins shows, Enlightenment discourses and scholars were also complicit in the Atlantic slave trade, becoming instruments of oppression and inequality. Translated into English for the first time, Dark Side of the Light scrutinizes Condorcet’s Reflections on Negro Slavery and the works of Montesquieu, Rousseau, and Diderot side by side with the Code Noir (the royal document that codified the rules of French Caribbean slavery) in order to uncover attempts to uphold the humanist project of the Enlightenment while simultaneously justifying slavery. Wielding the pen of both the ironist and the moralist, Sala-Molins demonstrates the flawed nature of these attempts and the reasons given for this denial of rights, from the imperatives of public order to the incomplete humanity of the slave (and thus the need for his progressive humanization through slavery), to the economic prosperity that depended on his labor. At the same time, Sala-Molins uses the techniques of literature to give equal weight to the perspective of the “barefooted, the starving, and the slaves” through expository prose and scenes between slave and philosopher, giving moral agency and flesh-and-blood dimensions to issues most often treated as abstractions. Both an urgent critique and a measured analysis, Dark Side of the Light reveals the moral paradoxes of Enlightenment philosophies and their world-changing consequences. Louis Sala-Molins is a moral and political philosopher and emeritus professor at the University of Toulouse. He is the author of many books, including Le Code Noir, ou Le calvaire de Canaan and L’Afrique aux Amériques. John Conteh-Morgan is associate professor of French and Francophone, African-American, and African studies at Ohio State University. He is the author of Theatre and Drama in Francophone Africa: A Critical Introduction.

Encompassing the whole milieu of early Islamic civilization, this major work of Western orientalism explores the meaning of the life and teaching of the tenth-century mystic and martyr, al-Hallaj. Massignon traveled throughout the Middle East and western India to gather and authenticate al-Hallaj's surviving writings and the recorded facts. After assembling the extant verses and prose works of al-Hallaj and the accounts of his life and death, Massignon published La Passion d'al-Hallaj in 1922. At his death in 1962, he left behind a greatly expanded version, published as the second French edition (1975). It is edited and translated here from the French and the Arabic sources by Massignon's friend and pupil, Herbert Mason. Volume 1 gives an account of al-Hallaj's life and describes the world in which he lives; volume 2 traces his influence in Islam over the centuries; volume 3 studies Hallajian thought; volume 4 contains a full biography and index.
