This book, although it has been classified as an autobiography, is really a series of short stories that will leave you smiling. There are paragraphs in this book that are so candid and sometimes revealing, that my first reaction was... Lou, your wife is going to kill you for saying that in print!!! Lou's story about the Russian girls is just one of those stories and is very funny. Don't think for a minute that this is just another autobiography. Lou begins by telling of life growing up as a young boy in Lower Manhattan in the 1920's and 1930s. Times were tough in those years and you had to be resourceful to stay alive and help put food on the table. As Lou states, "Everyone was just trying to make ends meet ... lots of poverty and hard times." If you're looking for tales like those portrayed in the movie 2009 Gangs of New York, forget it this is more like the perseverance portrayed in the 1939 Streets of New York with Jackie Cooper. Lou goes on to tell of his efforts to get into the U.S. Army during WWII; he was kept at bay by his loving mother for a while and was finally inducted and sent to Europe to fight. It is here that he meets the love of his life, Irene, in a small German village. She was a beautiful young girl, he was young and thunderstruck by her beauty and gentleness.

He just lay there, not knowing what to do or if he could even move. Someone called an ambulance and when the paramedics showed up to assist him to the vehicle, he was happy he could almost walk, without pain, except for the sting on the small of his back and the bump on his head. The ambulance driver called the hospital and explained that they wanted to bring him in because they didn't like his color. It indicated he was in shock. He was about to protest. Then he lost consciousness.

How was the female body perceived in the popular culture of late nineteenth-century Spain? Using a wide array of images from popular magazines of the day, Lou Charnon-Deutsch finds that women were typically presented in ways that were reassuring to the emerging bourgeois culture. Charnon-Deutsch organizes the 190 images reproduced in this book into six broad categories, or &"fictions of the feminine&": she reads women's bodies as a romantic symbol of beauty or evil, as a privileged link with the natural order, as a font of male inspiration, as a mouthpiece of bourgeois mores, as a focalized point of male fear and desire, and as an eroticized expression of Spanish exoticism and political ambitions. These imaginary visions of femininity, Charnon-Deutsch argues, were a response to, and also helped to create, gendered stereotypes by suggesting ideal feminine behavior and poses. Further, they comprised a reassuring &"between-male&" cultural medium that provided graphic validation of women's docile body for a culture enthralled with femininity. Integrating the fields of literature and cultural studies, Charnon-Deutsch's approach to this subject is unique. Many of the images collected here are available for the first time, and they represent only a fraction of the two thousand images Charnon-Deutsch collected during her research. Roberto "Bobby" Maduro (1916-1986) was a visionary baseball team owner and executive. His dedication to promoting the game internationally from the 1950s through the 1970s remains unrivaled. He headed Havana-based clubs in the Cuban Winter League and teams in the U.S. minor leagues, which helped brand Caribbean baseball in the eyes of North American fans. He co-built the first million-dollar ballpark in Latin America. His Havana stadium was confiscated by Castro's revolution, along with all his accumulated wealth. Maduro began a new life in exile in the U.S., first as a minor league owner, then as a front office executive. He founded the short-lived Inter-American League in 1979, composed of five Caribbean-basin teams and one U.S. entry from his adopted hometown of Miami. Commissioner Bowie Kuhn said of his many achievements, "No one was more dedicated, more knowledgeable or more concerned about the game than Bobby Maduro.
