In her timely contribution to revisionist approaches in modernist studies, Lorraine Sim offers a reading of Virginia Woolf's conception of ordinary experience as revealed in her fiction and nonfiction. Contending that Woolf's representations of everyday life both acknowledge and provide a challenge to characterizations of daily life as mundane, Sim shows how Woolf explores the potential of everyday experience as a site of personal meaning, social understanding, and ethical value. Sim's argument develops through readings of Woolf's literary representations of a subject's engagement with ordinary things like a mark on the wall, a table, or colour; Woolf's accounts of experiences that are both common and extraordinary such as physical pain or epiphanic 'moments of being'; and Woolf's analysis of the effect of new technologies, for example, motor-cars and the cinema, on contemporary understandings of the external world. Throughout, Sim places Woolf's views in the context of the philosophical and lay accounts of ordinary experience that dominated the cultural thought of her time. These include British Empiricism, Romanticism, Platonic thought and Post-Impressionism. In addition to drawing on the major novels, particularly The Voyage Out, Mrs. Dalloway, and To the Lighthouse, Sim focuses close attention on short stories such as 'The Mark on the Wall', 'Solid Objects', and 'Blue & Green'; nonfiction works, including 'On Being Ill', 'Evening over Sussex: Reflections in a Motor-car', and 'A Sketch of the Past'; and Woolf's diaries. Sim concludes with an account of Woolf's ontology of the ordinary, which illuminates the role of the everyday in Woolf's ethics.

Since Latin became the standard language for plant naming in the eighteenth century, it has been intrinsically linked with botany. And while mastery of the classical language may not be a prerequisite for tending perennials, all gardeners stand to benefit from learning a bit of Latin and its conventions in the field. Without it, they might buy a Hellebores foetidus and be unprepared for its fetid smell, or a Potentilla reptans with the expectation that it will stand straight as a sentinel rather than creep along the ground. An essential addition to the gardener’s library, this colorful, fully illustrated book details the history of naming plants, provides an overview of Latin naming conventions, and offers guidelines for pronunciation. Readers will learn to identify Latin terms that indicate the provenance of a given plant and provide clues to its color, shape, fragrance, taste, behavior, functions, and more. Full of expert instruction and practical guidance, Latin for Gardeners will allow novices and green thumbs alike to better appreciate the seemingly esoteric names behind the plants they work with, and to expertly converse with fellow enthusiasts. Soon they will realize that having a basic understanding of Latin before trips to the nursery or botanic garden is like possessing some knowledge of French before traveling to Paris; it enriches the whole experience.

Thousands of years ago humans destroyed their own planet through ruthless greed, intense mining and nuclear wars. They had to find another planet for their survival. A few found a planet similar to their own and settled on it. This planet was Eortha, the humans named it, Earth. Merimis Stork is a young woman, whose life is turned upside down when she discovers who and what she really is. The humans believe Merimis and her people are aliens, but she knows different. The humans are the aliens and they are destroying Earth like they destroyed Humorra, their own planet. Unknown to the majority of human civilization, avaricious humans are now after the diamond caves of Serhombi, situated deep beneath the Earth's oceans. To get to them they have to smash through one of Earth's dimensions, this will have a knock on effect for all of the dimensions and Earth will not be able to withstand this onslaught. Within a few years Earth will implode and be no more, but the few humans who cause this plan to be long gone before that happens. Merimis has to safeguard the heart of Eortha that is given to her to help fight for Earth's survival. She has to lead her people into a barbaric war that will cause untold misery to humans who have no idea this conflict is being raged in the Pacific ocean. Her army consists of dolphins, alligators, sharks, sea dragons, snakes, and other creatures, the most dangerous and deadly is a frightful and hideous monster. Before this Merimis has another problem, she falls in love with the audacious and dangerous Earth Border Control agent sent to kill her. Third party policing represents a major shift in contemporary crime control practices. As the lines blur between criminal and civil law, responsibility for crime control no longer rests with state agencies but is shared between a wide range of organisations, institutions or individuals. The first comprehensive book of its kind, Third Party Policing examines this growing phenomenon, arguing that it is the legal basis of third party policing that defines it as a unique strategy. Opening up the debate surrounding this controversial topic, the authors examine civil and regulatory controls necessary to this strategy and explore the historical, legal, political and organizational environment that shape its adoption. This innovative book combines original research with a theoretical framework that reaches far beyond criminology into politics and economics. It offers an important addition to the world-wide debate about the nature and future of policing and will prove invaluable to scholars and policy makers.

Covering 137 Connecticut towns and comprising 14,333 typed pages, the Barbour Collection of Connecticut birth, marriage, and death records to about 1850 was the life work of Lucius Barnes Barbour, Connecticut Examiner of Public Records from 1911 to 1934. This present series, under the general editorship of Lorraine Cook White, is a town-by-town transcription of Barbour's celebrated collection of vital records, one of the last great manuscript collections to be published. Each volume in the series contains the birth, marriage, and death records of one or more Connecticut towns. Entries are listed in alphabetical order by town (also in alphabetical order) and give, typically, name, date of event, names of parents, names of children, names of both spouses, and sometimes such items as age, occupation, and place of residence. The town of Thompson is the subject of Volume 46, which was compiled by Carole E. Magnuson.
Furniture, Lorraine Mariner's debut collection, was shortlisted for both the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and the Seamus Heaney Centre Poetry Prize. Her poetry is sharp, quirky and skilful. Praise for Furniture: 'Pleasingly direct and conversational, almost aggressively anti-poetic. The poems are spoken in the voice of a young woman who inches her way through a blizzard of bewilderment at life’s unpredictable twists and turns’ Tablet
This book was written at the 'request' of four Light Beings who asked the author to record all her psychic-spiritual experiences. Despite her initial resistance, this, her second book, SPIRITUAL PATHS AND CROSSROADS is the result of this request. "You just can't say no to them." But the simple chronological listing of events they suggested proved to be meaningless without the relevant events. This book covers many CROSSROADS that bring experiences for spiritual seekers in their quest for Truth. It covers important topics such as dealing with these ups and downs, the influence of past lives on current experiences, reincarnation, the Karmic Board, dreams, reality, precognition, the ego.
Heartful Business: Leading with the World in Mind is a provocation to everyone who’s a leader – to step up and join the battle to create a better world for all. And a battle it is. Governments and their leaders throw resources at problems for which they don’t have solutions, problems that keep growing and shapeshifting. The pressing need for a new leadership operating system for the world to survive, let alone thrive, is clear. We must solve the monumental problems facing our planet and humanity, for future generations to thrive. To do so will need a shift in how leaders lead as massive as the one we’re facing in our climate. The future isn’t just down to politicians. The challenge is too big. BUSINESS CAN LEAD THE WAY - by fundamentally committing to help create a better world for all. A handful of leaders get this but not enough. The thing is business leaders are ill-equipped to do what’s needed. WHAT’S NEEDED IS CONSCIOUS LEADERSHIP AND PRACTICAL ACTIONS THAT SET A ‘GREATER GOOD’ AT THE HEART OF THE ORGANISATION’S PURPOSE, VISION, CULTURE AND DAY-IN, DAY-OUT OPERATIONS. It’s about a new form of leadership based on five essential principles of human life expressed through five core qualities. From heartfulness, to greater reflection, to intentionality, to presence, to leading with more feminine qualities (irrespective of gender), Heartful Business: Leading with the World in Mind, sets out the standard and practices for the new era of leadership that’s fit for our times – describing why a new form of leadership is needed, what form it needs to take and, crucially, how to develop the capability to lead in this way. At whatever level you lead, Heartful Business will help you become the legacy-building leader you want to be and, more important, the world needs.
Advance praise for Memories of the Beach: "Lorraine O’Donnell Williams has given us a charming and evocative memoir of the Beach district six or seven decades ago, when it was a separate world in the southeast corner of Toronto. Everyone who knew the Beach that was, and everyone who knows the Beach of today, will enjoy her account of growing up in that special place." – Robert Fulford, author of Accidental City: The Transformation of Toronto "In this richly rendered memoir of a Catholic girl growing up in Toronto’s Beach community in the 1930s and 1940s, Lorraine Williams not only vividly captures the feeling of a more innocent age, but at the same time touches on a universal truth – that the place in which we are nurtured forms an integral part of the person we become. Simply wonderful." – Michael Bedard, author of the Governor General Award-winning Redwork In this rare combination of history and memoir, Lorraine O’Donnell Williams details life within Toronto’s Beach community in the 1930s and ’40s from the vantage point of her front verandah, which abutted the boardwalk. Her extensive research has uncovered numerous hidden facets of the heritage of this exceptional neighbourhood, including the stories of what was in its time one of North America’s most remarkable amusement parks, the popular dance hall, and how the area was transformed from cottage to urban living.

Progressive Corporate Governance for the 21st Century is a wide ranging and ambitious study of why corporate governance is the shape that it is, and how it can be better. The book sets out the emergence of shareholder primacy orientated corporate governance using a study of historical developments in the United Kingdom and the United States. Talbot sees shareholder primacy as a political choice made by governments, not a ‘natural’ feature of the inevitable market. She describes the periods of progressive corporate governance which governments promoted in the middle of the 20th century using a close examination of the theories of the company which then prevailed. She critically examines the rise of neoliberal theories on the company and corporate governance and argues that they have had a negative and regressive impact on social and economic development. In examining contemporary corporate governance she shows how regulatory styles as informed and described by prevailing regulatory theories, enables neoliberal outcomes. She illustrates how United Kingdom-derived corporate governance codes have informed the corporate governance initiatives of European and global institutions. From this she argues that neoliberalism has re-entered ex command transition economies through those United Kingdom and OECD inspired corporate governance Codes over a decade after the earlier failed and destructive neoliberal prescriptions for transition had been rejected. Throughout, Talbot argues that shareholder primacy has socially regressive outcomes and firmly takes a stand against current initiatives to enhance shareholder voting in such issues as director remuneration. The book concludes with a series of proposals to recalibrate the power between those involved in company activity; shareholders, directors and employees so that the public company can begin to work for the public and not shareholders.
